四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I wished her every success. But part of me didn’t. I actually wanted her to fail in some ways because I believe that failure can be good for our learning process(过程). Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or doing something correctly the first time, which can often be a problematic (存在问题的) victory. First-time success is usually luck. First-time failure, however, is supposed to be the natural order of things. Failure is how we learn.

In Africa they describe a good cook as “She who has broken many pots.” If you’ve spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of cookers, probably you know a lot about cooking. I once had dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn marks. They knew how much value their failures gave them.

I make my living by writing a daily newspaper. Each week I know that one part I write is going to be the worst part. I try my best every day. I have learned to love writing. A successful article usually means that I am discussing my familiar topic, writing in a style I am used to or saying the same things as anyone else but in a better way.

My younger daughter is a trapeze artist (荡秋千演员). She spent three years practicing a show, and she did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change it but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored. And if she was bored, there was no meaning in putting her body into all that stress. She risked failure and great public embarrassment(尴尬) in order to improve herself.

My granddaughter is a perfectionist. She will feel her failures, and I will want to comfort her. But I will also, I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do better next time. I hope I can tell her, though, that it’s not the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning.

【1】What does the writer think of his daughter’s changing her show?

A.He doesn’t think it wise of his daughter to do so.

B.He is worried about the risk his daughter takes.

C.He is very excited about his daughter’s decision.

D.He stands on his daughter’s side no matter what the result will be.

【2】The writer talked about his own experience to show that ________.

A.past failures made him afraid of taking risks in writing

B.we should try every possible way to avoid failure

C.the thought of failure will make you work even harder

D.we cannot depend on luck to live a good life

【3】The writer develops the article mainly by ________.

    A.following the time order

    B.giving examples

    C.comparing different opinions

D.giving a reason and its results

  • 25、   Many people around the world celebrate Halloween, which occurs annually on October 31. It was believed that the spirits of the dead could return to the Earth around that time every year, Halloween is now celebrated in many countries such as Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. • 26、Nguyen Tra My, a freshman at a college, wasn’t at her dorm (宿舍) again last weekend, but it was no surprise to her classmates. They all knew she had gone to Thailand to see a concert of her favorite band. Although she knew it was wrong, Nguyen said, “The concert was a one-off!”

Nguyen’s case is not rare. Idolizing a star (追星) has spread widely among Vietnamese youths. Psychological expert La Thi Buoi thought it was natural. “The Internet helps young people get information about their idols, so they spend more time on them,” she said. “But it also means less time on study, or with family and friends. In the long term, it would lead to bad results.”

However, some young people have their own ideas. “Nguyen is a true fan. When talking about her favorite band, she is always full of energy and confidence,” Nguyen’s classmate Trang said. “And her grades don’t go down because of following celebrities.”

Nguyen herself said, “I know how to organize my time. I only spend half an hour online, reading articles about my idols. The rest of my time is spent studying or going out with my friends.”

Nguyen also shared that she became more positive after becoming a fan of the band. “They have worked really hard to get today’s success. They’ve done a lot to help fight COVID-19. They are well worth learning,” Nguyen added. “Their music also cheers me up and helps me to overcome difficulties in life.”

Idolization as a whole is not a bad thing. But, problems usually come up when parents fail to accept their children’s behavior.

Buoi suggested that there is a need for communication between the generations. “Adults should be patient and give more guidance and understanding to young people. They need support from adults.” Buoi also suggested that more cultural and sports programs would encourage youngsters to leave their smart phones and take part in healthier activities.

【1】Nguyen was away from school last weekend because ________.

A.she prepared a surprise for her classmates

B.she was invited to an important concert

C.she went to Thailand for a short holiday

D.she went for her favourite band

【2】What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A.Nguyen is spending too much time idolizing her stars.

B.Idolizing a star is quite popular among young people in Vietnam.

C.La Thi Buoi doesn’t accept the young people to idolize their stars.

D.Many people in Vietnam agree with Nguyen’s idolizing her stars.

【3】According to Trang, we can know that ________.

    A.idolizing stars doesn’t influence Nguyen’s studies

B.Nguyen doesn’t get on well with her classmates now

C.idolizing stars makes Nguyen more confident in learning

D.many of her classmates love idolizing star

    【4】In Nguyen’s opinion, idolizing stars ________.

A.takes up her a lot of time

    B.makes her grow better

C.helps the young to solve problems

D.encourages the young to learn more

【5】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Idolizing a star is becoming a problem for young people.

B.Young people have different ideas about idolizing stars.

C.More help should be given to the young about idolizing stars.

D.Idolizing stars wisely helps the young be a better self.
