  • 24、   My mother had only one eye. I never wanted her to show up at my school.

One day during primary school, I was terribly ill. My mother came.

“Your mother only has one eye!” yelled some of my classmates. I wished my mother would have just disappeared(消失).

“If you embarrass me, why don’t you just die?” I shouted at her, taking no notice of the sad look on her face. My mother just handed me some medicine and left without saying anything.

At that time, I didn’t think I had hurt her feelings very much. That night I saw my mom crying in her room. Even so, I hated her tears from one eye. I made a decision: I must study hard and leave my mother.

Years later, my dream came true. I was quite successful. I never thought of going back to see my “ugly” mother until one day I got a letter.

“My son, I’m sorry I only have one eye. When you were little, you got into an accident and lost your eye. As a mom, I couldn’t stand watching you live with only one eye. So I gave you mine. I was never angry with you and I never regretted it because I love you.”

  • 25、Up to two thirds of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slower at school, researchers say.

So how long should young people sleep each night? The answer is between 8 and 10 hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.

But the researchers say many children have missed out on 4,500 hours of sleep by the time they are 7 years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their young children at night any more. The traditional “bedtime story” helps children relax and fall asleep peacefully. Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms are more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than 8 hours' sleep.Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.

German scientists think that your brain keeps working while you're sleeping. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out. One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. What is the result? The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly, suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So, make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!

1What happens to children at school if they don't get enough sleep?

    A. They walk more slowly.

    B. They can relax.

    C. They watch more TV.

    D. They do less well at school.

2The main idea of the second paragraph is ________.

    A. how much sleep we need each night

    B. children don't get enough sleep

    C. our brains never really go to sleep

    D. TVs and computers are the problems

3How does a bedtime story help children get a good night's sleep?

    A. It helps children relax and fall asleep peacefully.

    B. Children lose more sleep.

    C. Children have more energy.

    D. Children get to sleep later.

4Why is it better to sleep in a room without a TV or a computer?

    A. You can read stories before you go to sleep.

    B. You sleep better and get more sleep.

    C. You have less energy.

    D. Your brain works better.

5What does the German scientists' experiment show?

    A. Sleep helps children learn to read.

    B. Losing sleep means children don't learn well.

    C. Your brain works while you are asleep.

    D. Parents should read bedtime stories.

  • 26、From tiny seeds, great discoveries grow. Recently, China’s Chang’e 4 moon lander(登月舱) carried a mini-garden. It became home to the first plant to grow on another world.

This is yet another success for Chang’e 4. On January 3, 2019, the probe (探测器) became the first lander to touch down on the far side (背面) of the moon. This is the unknown face of the moon that is always looking away from us, so we never see it from down here on the earth. Although it is often known as the dark side of the moon, the far side actually gets as much sunshine as the near side. For example, when all we can see is a new moon, the far side of the moon is in full sunlight.

Part of Change 4’s task is to see how a moon base could be built for humans, including exploring whether humans could grow food and other plant products there. Chang’e 4 carried a mini-garden with air, water and soil with seeds planted in it. When plants shoot on the earth, their stems grow away from the gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground), and so they always shoot upwards. The moon’s gravity is a sixth as strong as the earth’s, so Change 4’s experiment was a test: would the earth plants know which way was up on the moon? Four days after landing, a tiny cotton shoot showed that they know.

Night has now fallen on the far side of the moon, sunlight will not return until the start of February, both on the near and the far sides. As a result, the cotton shoots died. Besides the darkness, the plants can’t stand the cold (it can drop to -170℃ on the moon at night). However, the experiment is a success, since it has proved that it is possible for plants to grow in space.

【1】Which of the following is TRUE about Change 4?

    A.It carried a mini-garden.

B.It landed on the near side of the moon.

C.It built a moon base on the moon.

D.It found plants oh the moon.

【2】What can we know from the text?

A.The far side of the moon gets less sunlight.

B.We can see the far side of the moon from the earth.

C.The stems fail to grow away from the earth’s gravity.

D.The earth plants know the way to grow on the moon.

【3】What can be inferred from the text?

A.Plants have been grown on the moon.

B.It is perfect to do experiments on the moon.

C.The cotton shoots can last for weeks on the moon.

D.We can see a new moon at the start of February.

【4】In which section of a magazine can you read the text?

    A.Health and sport.

    B.History and culture.

    C.Science and technology.

    D.Population and environment.

  • 27、 “How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way for Americans to greet each other. But How are you?”is also a very unusual question. It often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks” How are you?” hopes to hear the answer“Fine”even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. In fact, they are not really a question or an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello”or“Hi”.

Sometimes people also don’t say exactly what they mean, For example, when someone asks Do you agree?”the other person might think,“No,I disagree. I think you’re wrong.” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say,“ I’m afraid …”It’s a nicer way to disagree.

People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many phone talks finish when one person says” I have to go now.” Often, the person who wants to finish the phone call gives an excuse,” Someone’s at the door.” The excuse might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to finish the phone call simply doesn’t want to talk anymore, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.

When they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, thinking of finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking about. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it is part of the game of language.

【1】“How are you?”is another way of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.

【2】It is polite to say” No,I disagree. I think you are wrong” if you don’t agree with others.

【3】When someone says” I have to go now” on the phone, it means he wants to go on talking.

【4】“Someone is at the door ”may be an excuse for finishing a phone call.

【5】Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking about just because they try to be nice to each other.
