26、Dear Daniel,
I feel that I’ve grown up and should make my own decisions, but my parents disagree. My mom still helps me choose what clothes to wear. My dad asks me to pay attention only to study. I know they do this out of love, but I feel controlled. What should I do?
Amanda
Dear Amanda,
Your parents sound very strict. It’s hard to believe that your mom chooses what you wear. Are you a Barbie doll?
Try to take the first step when possible. Dress yourself before your mother has a chance to come in and choose your clothes. If she asks you to change, tell her you’ll be late for school.
You should also talk to her. Ask about her choices: What makes a set of clothes acceptable or unacceptable? Tell her you will follow her rules, but you want to make the choices. You are not in first grade. You are a young lady in high school.
As for your father, it’s difficult to argue with his mind. After all, he is not totally wrong. How strict is he? Does he lock you up with your textbooks? Are you allowed to have a hobby? Are you allowed to have a smartphone? Are you allowed to hang out with friends?
Such strict parents should know the law of diminishing returns(收益递减). A weightlifter, for example, can only lift for an hour or two each day. If she does more, her muscles will not become stronger. She will just get tired. She may even hurt herself!
Our brains also have limits. Some violin teachers say you should only practice a new skill for 15 minutes each day. Our brains need to relax and understand new information. Our brains also have a basic need to socialize(社交). Ask your father: what is the meaning of so much studying if it makes you feel unhappy?
Stay strong.
Daniel

27、One day, a poor boy was trying to sell things from door to door to pay for school. He was hungry. Then he decided to ask for a meal at the next house. Before she left, the bill (账单) was sent to her. She was quite afraid to open it. Finally, she looked, and to her surprise, she found these words on the bill: "Paid with a glass of milk.Dr. Howard Kelly.”

28、 In the middle of the 1800s, France was considered the most important place in the world for a【1】. One reason for that was the Academy (学院), a government organization with some strict rules about art. It decided what could and could not be art. In order to be accepted by the Academy, an artist had to be very talented. Artists also had to paint exactly the way the Academy wanted them to. A brave group of painters challenged (挑战) these ideas and changed art f【2】.
Each year, the Academy had an exhibition of the art they had decided was the best. In 1864, a group of artists became a【3】 because they didn’t give into their own show. B【4】 these artists were more interested in trying to show movement and the bright colors of daylight. In their opinion, it was more real to show these than it was to paint a scene (场景) which was as still (静止的) as a photo. It was also more interesting to show all of the different colours when light hits an object like water.
By 1874, many different artists were painting in this new style, including Claude Monet. One of his paintings had the title, Impression: sunrise. A critic (评论家) didn't l【5】 these new artists. Other artists around the world felt that they could have this freedom as well. Because of the impressionists, the art world was never the s【7】. It is interesting and changeable.
