四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、When you feel sick, you go to the doctor. She checks your fever, and asks what you’ve been thinking about recently. When you leave, she gives you not only some medicine but also a list of thinking skills that you are supposed to practise daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of your illnesses.

Doctors and scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people behave in the way they do are called psychologists. They are starting to believe that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system. Now scientists have proved that how you think and feel can have an influence on the health of your body. Stress can help us better understand this link.

Stress is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. In fact, stress is necessary. Without stress, we would never learn anything or grow or change. But too much stress can hurt you. It can weaken your body’s protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more likely to have an accident.

What can you do about stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren’t under so much stress. You can set up a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to try to work things out with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can’t change a stressful situation. Sometimes you don’t even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful.

The link between your body and brain works in two ways. Your body can help your mind deal with stress. If you are under stress, you need to take especially good care of your body. It’s important to get enough sleep and eat nutritious meals. Another thing that you can do is daily exercise, like running and jogging.

【1】A psychologist may help you with _________.

    A.all your illnesses and abilities

    B.your thoughts and behaviour

    C.your mind and nervous system

    D.your sleeping and daily exercise

【2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.When we feel stressed, we should sleep less.

B.Diseases and accidents are often caused by stress.

C.We shouldn’t do some sports if we are under stress.

D.Everyone needs stress to improve himself or herself.

【3】From the underlined sentence of Paragraph 4 we can infer(推断) that _________.

A.it’s difficult to change a stressful situation

B.it’s not stressful when a good change happens

C.a big change will cause another stressful situation

D.a stressful situation can’t be changed without any effort

  • 26、   The great US writer, J. D. Salinger was one of the most influential writers of the last century. His writing interests all age groups, but young people are especially big fans of his.

He is famous for his novel The Catcher in the Rye. The hero of this story is named Holden Caulfield. Holden is a troublemaker at school and has difficulty getting along with others.

And yet Holden has a heart of gold. Many readers have been moved by the attitude (态度) he has toward young children, especially to his little sister Phoebe. He always tries his best to protect the young. Millions of people all over the world have taken the troubled 17-year-old Holden into their hearts.

In fact, Salinger didn't write all that much over the course of his life. Besides The Catcher in the Rye, he published (出版) a few other shorter works, and then, after 1965, nothing at all. The reason for this seems to be that he hated public attention. He had become famous with the success of his novel and didn't care about what people thought of him. He refused to give interviews and did not allow anyone to write about him.

  • 27、Misadventure in English

Last week, our forum (论坛)asked if you had any funny or strange stories about using English. Here are some of our favourite posts.

    Sophie

When I first visited New York, I went to a shopping centre. I asked a lady where the shoes were. She said they were on the first floor. I went upstairs. But I couldn’t find any. I thought she gave me the wrong information. Then, I realized that the first floor was the ground floor.

    Yancy.

I went to a summer school in Manchester. One day, the head master told us that our English teacher Maggie couldn’t teach that day because she had a frog in her throat. Why did she eat a frog? Then I learned that it means someone’s throat is dry or blocked. How funny!

    Julien

My British penfriend once told me that his grandfather was “wicked (邪恶的)”. But when I met his grandfather, I liked him a lot. I found it very strange. Why did my friend use a bad word about such a nice man? Guess what? When speaking informally, “wicked” means “very nice”.

    Zheng Xu

I was part of a student exchange programme between a school in England and one in China. I knew I had done a good job writing my first English paper. But my teacher gave me “Not bad!” Not bad? There weren’t any mistakes! Actually, British people use “not bad” when things are pretty good! I got a good comment!

【1】Who posted the story about buying shoes?

    A.Sophie.

    B.Yancy.

    C.Julien.

    D.Zheng Xu.

    【2】What happened to Maggie?

    A.She ate a frog.

    B.She had a dry throat.

    C.She lost her penfriend.

    D.She got a bad comment.

【3】What does Julien think of his penfriend’s grandfather?

    A.Strange.

    B.Funny.

    C.Strict.

    D.Nice.
