  • 23、   Where did humans come from? An Australian researcher believes that she’s found the answer: river valley in the African country of Botswana (博瓦纳).

Professor Vanessa Hayes from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney said she and her team have traced (追踪) modern humans back to small group of people who lived in this valley, according to the BBC.

“It’s an extremely large area, it would have been very lush (苍翠繁茂的), and it would have actually provided a suitable habitat for modern humans,” she said. She and her team studied mitochondrial (线粒体的) DNA (mtDNA) from people who live in south Africa, such as the Khoisan people. This type of DNA is only passed down from mother to child. This makes it easier to trace one’s ancestry (祖先), according to Business Insider. By tracing mtDNA back through different generations, the team concluded that every person alive today is related to a woman who lived in Botswana.

However, some experts doubt Hayes’ findings, saying that studies like hers are no longer important or necessary. “The idea that we’re looking for a single origin [of modern humans] is out of fashion,” said John Hawks, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, in Popular Science.

There are many other locations around the world where humans could have gotten their start. It is likely that mankind appeared in many places at the same time. “I increasingly think that there probably wasn’t a single population in which modern humans evolved (进化). If that is the case, there is no ‘homeland’,” said Ryan Raaum, who researches African population genetics (遗传学) at Lehman College, US.

1According to Hayes, where did humans come from?

    A.Australia. B.Botswana. C.South Africa. D.Latin America.

2Hayes and her team studied mtDNA because ________.

A.it is the most common type of DNA humans share B.there is a new technology to test mtDNA

C.it is only passed down from mother to child D.both women and men can take mtDNA tests

    3According to Hawks, Hayes’s study is ________.

    A.important B.wrong C.fascinating D.unnecessary

4What is the story mainly about?

A.New findings about the origin of humans. B.New findings about mtDNA.

C.The evolution of humans. D.The habitats of ancient humans..

  • 24、Why think of road safety? It is because of the accidents that occur every day on the road. These accidents mean losing rife or wealth and more than traffic jams. So if people aren’t educated on the importance of road safety, the situation can’t be avoided.

Accidents have many causes. The simplest is people slipping down on the road caused by a banana skin. Without meaning any harm, a person may throw away the banana skin on the road. When a person steps on, he or she will slip down ending in broken bones and sometimes even more dangerous. So people must take care and throw them in a bin. In some countries, the offenders are seriously punished. The second cause is careless crossing in busy roads instead of crossing along zebra crossings. One should keep to the sidewalk of the road while walking and the vehicles must keep to their lanes in busy streets.

Also, there are many causes for the accidents about vehicles. One is trying to overtake. Another is not noticing the signals. “Stop, look and go” is the basic rule, it will save vehicles from accidents. Riding two or three side by side is always dangerous. Very often the cause of accidents is the failure of the brake system which means the owner of the vehicle does not keep the machine in good condition.

Road safety is a matter of education in which schools can share responsibility. Through class meetings, children can be taught the importance of observing the rules of the road. As soon as the bell goes, children rush out and accidents do happen. Therefore, teachers must feel it their day to control the traffic near the school. The polie can help schools at rush hours.

To make people aware of road safety, media can play a useful role. The newspaper, the wall poster and the cinema and now the TV can deliver information. There may be speeches over the radio by the police officials or advertisements about being careful on roads before films or TV programs.

七、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)

Have you ever experienced the feeling of falling as you start to fall asleep? Sometimes you may wake up to this feeling. If so, don’t worry. Many people have felt the same thing.

In fact, these muscle twitches(肌肉抽搐)in the arms, legs or other parts of the body are called hypnic jerks(入嚼抽动)or sleep starts. And they are very c【1】 . Up to 70 percent of people experience them sometimes, Huffington Post reported. But what causes it?

There are some theories(理念). Some scientists believe that the feeling of falling comes from the body relaxing itself, especially if the person is anxious or unable to get comfortable. A【2】 you’re going to sleep, your muscles become relaxed. But your brain s【3】 awake. It misunderstands the relaxing of your muscles as a sign that you’re falling. The brain then jerks the body awake as if it’s trying to protect you.

Other scientists believe that different phases of sleep might cause the hypnic jerks. When we sleep, we experience two phases non-rapid eye movement (NREM,非快速眼动睡眠期) and rapid eye movement (REM,快速眼动睡眠期). During REM, our heart rate, breathing and nervous s【4】 can fact irregularly. If the body experiences flashes(一瞬间)of REM while entering sleep, these irregularities could cause twitches.

If you don’t want to experience hypnic jerks, scientists have some suggestions. When you become r【5】 relaxed, you can learn how to reconnect slowly by moving your fingers and toes a little bit. Then start to move your head and open your eyes, while being aware of yourself as you get out of the relaxed state.

But experts agree that hypnic jerks, though sometimes scary, are homeless. If it wakes you up, simply roll over and go back to sleep,. But keep in mind: a caffeinated(含咖啡因的) drink, e【6】 evening activities or stress may make hypnic jerks happen more often.
