21、For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted to the cold dry climates of the ice age, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.
Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. Nowadays, the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year; equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the U. K. each year. But how will the Amazon react to future climate change? If it gets drier, will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.
On the one hand, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. On the other hand, to study past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen (花粉) kept in lake mud. Going back to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lake sediments (沉淀物), which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and planes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rives completely unsampled. So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.

Curling(冰壶)is a winter sport that goes by two nicknames: “chess on ice” and “the roaring game”. It is called “chess on ice” because it requires strategy(策略)and patience to play well. On a strip of ice that is about 44.5 m long, two teams of four players slide(滑动)heavy stones on the ice towards a target. Brooms are used to sweep the ice and guide the stone. When the stone slides across the ice, it makes a rumbling(隆隆声)sound. This is why curling is also called “the roaring game”.
Curling is a new sport in China. Although it looks simple at first, the sport depends greatly on teamwork, critical thinking(思辨性思维)and self-control.
The cold northeastern city of Harbin is a center for winter sports, and some of China’s top curlers call Harbin home. One of these famous curlers is Wang Bingyu. Her team won the bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics. This was the first Olympic medal that China won in curling and the first team medal that China had ever won in the Winter Olympics.
Wang has retired from curling and now helps to promote the sport. “I believe that I have a duty to make a contribution to the development of curling,” Wang told the World Curling Federation. Wang is the Curling Program Director for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
The Chinese Curling Association(中国冰壶协会)has also worked hard to promote curling and introduce the sport to more people. With events and training programs, the organization is helping the country reach its goal of encouraging 300 million people to take part in winter sports.

23、Self-driving cars are believed to be the future of driving. Companies including Toyota, Uber and Google are all competing to be the first to bring them to market.
However, car makers need to solve one problem first: How driverless cars communicate with passers-by, bikers and other drivers. Most drivers today use gestures to show their purposes. They wave a car into a lane(车道), or nod at passers-by and cyclists, to let them cross the street. But self-driving cars don’t have this ability. What can they do? US carmaker Ford and its partner Virginia Tech think they have the answer, reported Business Insider. The team is testing a method that uses light signals to show what self-driving cars are doing. For example, if a driverless car is yielding, it could flash two white lights side to side. A solid white light tells there are no humans in the car. A slow blinking light shows the car is coming to a stop. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up. To test the method on real roads, the team designed a special suit that looks exactly like a car seat. When a driver wears it, it appears to people that the car is really driverless. The team then successfully got more than 1,500 hours of data after about 2,900 kilometres of “self-driving” through busy cities. The data recorded how people interacted with a driverless vehicle. Ford says they plan to share the data with 11 other companies, reported dogonews. com. The company wants to work with other carmakers to design a signaling system that would be understood by all.

During the two sessions (两会), Lei Jun, the founder (创始人) of China’s tech company Xiaomi, called for more e-waste recycling (回收利用) plans in China.
According to the 2020 UN Global E-waste Monitor, the world’s e-waste will reach 74.7 million tons by 2030.
The report also found that only 17.4 percent of the world’s e-waste was collected and recycled in 2019. This means that gold, silver, copper (铜) and other high-value materials were mostly burned or throw instead of reused. It’s a waste of 57 billion dollars, or 360 billion yuan. E-waste can also harm the environment and people’s health. For example, one mobile phone battery can pollute 600,000 liters of water.
China is now the world’s largest producer of e-waste, followed by the US, India and Japan, according to the UN report. Tech companies are looking for different ways to solve the problem. For example, US company Apple built a robot called Daisy to take 200 iPhones apart. It can take 200 iPhones apart within an hour. Previously the phones were cut up before people took the useful materials out. Now with Daisy, valuable materials can be pulled out more easily.
Samsung plans to use recycled materials in all of its new products by the year 2025. It also plans to reduce e-waste by improving product life cycles. Xiaomi is also setting up e-waste recycling platforms so that people can donate or sell their old electronics more easily.

A.To reduce the use of e-products.
B.To buy more smartphones.
C.To recycle more e-waste.
