There were five girls in our family and we all had to help out. Once when I was about seven, I came out of the kitchen, “Mom, I can't peel potatoes. I only have one hand.” “You get back to peel those potatoes, and don't ever use that as an excuse for anything again!”
Of course I could peel potatoes with my good hand and my other arm.“Jenny, if you try hard enough,” she said, “you can do anything.”
Once in the second grade, our teacher had each of us race across the monkey bars(攀爬架). When it was my turn, I said “no”. Some kids laughed. I went home crying.
The next afternoon, Mom took me back to the school playground. “Now, pull up with your right arm,” she advised. She praised me when I made progress. I'll never forget when I was crossing the bars, the kids were standing there with their mouths open.

23、
When students at Olathe East High School in the US got their CPR (心肺复苏术) training this winter, 15-year-old Seth Johnson paid close attention. Two weeks after his training, Seth helped his elder sister Claire use CPR to save their dad when he had a heart attack (心脏病发作).
That day, their father Mark was in their home when he suddenly felt quite sick. Then, things got worse. Hearing their dad shouting, Claire ran in and helped Seth pull their dad off the couch and lay him flat (平的). Claire called 911 and then started CPR.
Claire put her hands on the center of her dad’s chest (胸部) and began to push hard and fast about twice per second. She pushed on his chest 30 times, then gave two rescue breaths (人工呼吸).
Claire once took the same training course Seth did at school. After about four minutes of heavy chest compressions (胸部按压), she was tired and Seth had to take over. About two minutes later, medical workers arrived. Mark spent five days in hospital, but has since fully recovered.
Recent studies have shown that CPR saves less than 20 percent of people in these kinds of situations. But experts say it’s still worth trying. And the earlier it’s given, the more successful it’s likely to be. The American Heart Association has encouraged more schools to offer CPR training. As of last year, 38 states had laws asking students to learn it.

A.Four minutes. B.Two minutes. C.Six minutes. D.Five days.
【5】What can we infer from the story?

B.More than 80 percent of patients benefit from CPR.
C.Both Claire and Seth learned CPR at school.
D.All US schools require students to learn CPR.
24、Have you ever been to Berlin? I paid a visit to it for five days and enjoyed a happy time. Berlin is a big city. In order to make my travel easy, I divided the city into some areas, and then traveled from area to area. It is a great place for a bike ride instead of walking around. It provides a fast and easy way to move around Berlin, and costs around 9 Euros per day to rent.
If you really want to enjoy walking, there is also a free walking tour. It begins at the Brandenburg Gate and lasts 3.5 hours. It took me through the center of the city, showed me all the highlights(重要的部分)and gave me some history about the city. For me, one of the most important things is to enjoy the local delicious food. We can judge(判断)a city on how cheap it is by the food, and the food in Berlin is very cheap. And not just street food, even the restaurants there are a bargain. You can find a lot of meals for less than 5 Euros. Here is a truth for you—the lemons(柠檬)and the fresh vegetables are mouth-watering.
After this visit, I enjoy Berlin more. Though I may not ever live there, I’d happily go back and visit—over and over again.
