24、 Anyone who has experienced a cyclone (飓风) will tell you how terrible it can be. High winds and lots of rain can destroy a city in less than an hour.
A big cyclone, named Cyclone Debbie, hit Australia's east coast at the end of March. Winds as fast as 263km/h destroyed houses, trees, cars and boats. Sea levels rose and flooded coastal towns, while rivers also flooded. Many cities near rivers went underwater. Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes and farms, and at least eight people died. The cyclone lasted for about three days, but the flooding is still happening two weeks later. Some cities never recover from a cyclone, while it takes others years to rebuild.
A tropical cyclone (热带气旋) begins when a group of thunderstorms meet over warm, tropical waters. Lots of air and water is sucked into the clouds from the ocean. Because Earth is rotating(旋转) the clouds start to spiral(盘旋上升). That is why the tropical cyclone has a curved(弯曲的) shape when you see it on a map. For this reason, tropical cyclones cannot form near the Equator(赤道) because Earth's rotation isn't big enough there. When the wind speed increases to 120 km/h, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane, typhoon (台风) or cyclone.
So what's the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and a typhoon? The answer is actually quite simple.
All three are the same. We just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Oceans around the US, it is called hurricane. The same type of storm in the North Pacific near China is called a typhoon and cyclones form in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean near Australia.
【1】Which of the following about Cyclone Debbie is NOT true?
A.It hit Australia's east coast in March.
B.The wind speed reached 263 km/h.
C.It caused a huge loss for coastal towns.
D.The flooding stopped after three days.
【2】How does a tropical cyclone happen?
A.When a group of thunderstorms meet warm, tropical waters.
B.When the water in the ocean flows in a curved shape.
C.When a group of thunderstorms meet near an Equator.
D.When the wind speed reaches over 120 km/h.
【3】How can we tell the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and 8 typhoon?
A.From the time it takes place.
B.From where it takes place.
C.From how it takes place.
D.From how many people it kills.
25、There can be magic in the touch of a hand that loves you. It brings comfort and a silent promise that says, “I am here and you are not alone.”
I remembered every detail about my children. As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease (使……放松) them back to sleep. They stuck to (紧跟) me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.
As they grew older and more independent (独立的), I noticed that they didn’t hold my hand much any more. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now. But when you’ve been needed so much for such a long time, it’s hard to step back and feel unnecessary.
Then one day, I was visiting my oldest son in New York, where he was working as an actor on a TV show. As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, “Hang on to me, Mom,” then led me safely across.
At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become a man. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other, but in different ways from before.
That scene has replayed in different ways with each of my three children. They have all taught me to lean on (依赖) them just as they once leaned on me, and that we can always lean on each other. We live miles apart, but stay in touch every day. There is magic and comfort and healing in the touch of a hand that loves you, even if it “touches” you from afar.

26、The balance (平衡) between work and life can be really hard. Working longer and harder doesn’t mean achieving (实现) more. What’s more, you may have no time to spend with the people that you care about. Here are three work-life balance suggestions you can try right now to start living a happier life:
Show gratitude (感谢)
A smart way to create and live happier life is to actively find things or people you are thankful for. This influences not only your own personal state (状态) of mind but also others’. You can send a handwritten card to the people you love or someone who means a lot to you. Try giving thanks for at least three things at the end of each day and see how it changes the way you feel.
Learn to say NO
Sometimes, we have to say YES to things that we really don’t want to do. Have the courage (勇气) to live a life on your own terms and say YES only to the things that you really want to do. For everything else, start saying NO. When you start saying NO to most things, you will become more focused (专心的) on everything you have said YES to.
Have more fun
Think about what can get you excited and the people you love spending time with. You can also take some risks, try something new or learn a new skill. If you need to get out of your comfort place to have more fun, just do it. Besides, it’s time to make things more exciting.

27、In the past, many people depended on horses for transportation(运输), farming and other kinds of work. Nowadays a lot of people still like to ride horses. So it is not surprising that many expressions about it are still used by Americans today.
Long ago, people who were rich or important rode horses that were very tall. Today, if a girl is too proud and looks down upon others, you might say she should "get off her high horse."
Last night, I got a telephone call while I was watching my favorite television show. I decided not to answer it because "wild horses could not drag me away" from the television -- there was nothing that could stop me from doing what I wanted to do.
Sometimes you get information "straight from the horse's mouth." It comes directly from the person who knows most about the subject and is the best source. Let us say your teacher tells you there is going to be a test tomorrow. You could say you got the information "straight from the horse's mouth." However, you would not want to call your teacher a horse!
You may have heard this expression: "You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink." That means you can give someone advice but you cannot force him to do something he does not want to do.
In politics, a "dark-horse candidate" is someone who is not well known to the public. Sometimes, a dark horse unexpectedly wins an election(选举).
Another piece of advice is "do not change horses in midstream." You would not want to get off one horse and on to another in the middle of a river. Or make major changes in an activity that has already begun.
