二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、There’s no doubt that man is the smartest. But do you know what other animals are smart, too?

    Dolphins

Dolphins are very smart. Most of the “tricks” they’re taught to do are actually behavior they would engage in on their own. They love to play, race and generally enjoy their life to the fullest. They speak a language we have yet to completely understand and like all civilized creatures, dolphins’ mothers always provide their young children with guidance and possibly, love.

    Great apes

The great ape family primarily consists of gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. Their brain chemistry is so similar to humans’ that NASA once used chimpanzees in place of astronauts during many dangerous missions. Gorillas have been taught sign language and orangutans exist in complex familial relationships.

    Elephants

Everyone has heard the phrase “an elephant never forgets”. Elephants establish long-term friendships, recognizing and remembering their friends years later. If an elephant comes upon a fallen friend, it has even been known to feel sad.

    Parrots

As proved by this list, parrots are very smart. They are also the only animals listed that can actually hold a conversation. Some parrots know hundreds of words by imitating humans. The birds are also capable of remembering words and using them intelligently in response to situations.

【1】Which of the following is TRUE about dolphins?

    A. They are able to play a lot of tricks.

    B. Humans know well of dolphins’ language.

    C. Their brain chemistry is similar to humans’.

    D. Dolphins’ mothers care little about their children.

【2】Which kind of animal has a long-term memory?

    A. Dolphins.   B. Great apes.

  • 28、Knowing a foreign language is becoming more and more important at this time. Many people want to study the foreign language. There are two ways to learn a foreign language. The first is to stay in the homeland to study the foreign language. The second is to study in another place where the foreign language is spoken. Going to the native place to learn a language is the better choice. I will give reasons to support my opinion.

To begin with, going to the native country to learn a language offers us a good language environment. It will help us to learn the language faster. For example, everyone around me speaks the foreign language, and then I have to improve my self to talk with them. If I cannot talk with other people, I cannot even buy food to keep myself alive. This environment makes me want to develop myself to be able to talk with those people who speak the foreign language.

Secondly, I can make more friends who speak the foreign language as their native language. These friends can help me learn the language fast. In an English school, people come from different places and speak different languages. However, the only language that I can use to talk to my friends is the English language. Thus, I can talk with my friends without worrying about making mistakes. This helps me make fast progress in learning foreign languages.

In conclusion, I personally believe that learning languages in foreign countries is better than learning languages at home because I have to improve myself to communicate with other people. Besides, in a foreign country I can have a chance to speak the foreign language with my friends. Learning foreign languages in the native country is the better choice for me.

【1】The author thinks it is better for him to ________.

A.find someone to practice speaking the language

B.learn a foreign language in its native country.

C.learn a foreign language in the home country.

D.make friends with those who speak a foreign language.

【2】What can the native environment provide for learners?

    A.More working chances.

    B.A better language environment.

    C.Better schools.

    D.Nicer food to eat.

【3】The advantage of learning a foreign language with friends is that ________.

A.people can have more time to practice.

B.people don’t have to pay too much money.

C.people don’t have to worry about their mistakes.

D.people can receive more advice from friends.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude to learning a foreign language in the native environment?

    A.Opposed.

    B.Uncertain.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Confident.

  • 29、Twelve-year-old Leonardo was born in a poor family in Bambamarca in Peru. He knew how to read but he had never seen a book in his life. So he asked the new priest (牧师) in his village to give him one. But there was no electricity. So Leonardo borrowed candles from the church and sat up all night reading it. The next morning, he was at the door of the priest asking for another book to read.

John Medcalf, the priest, was moved. He also realised that people would love to read if given a chance. But he knew how difficult it was for Leonardo and those in his village to get books. And yet, no one can be taught to read and write without books. To make people in a poor, faraway area grow to love books, they have to be with them. So he thought the only way was to bring books to people.

But how could this be done? Mobile libraries or car libraries would be too expensive and difficult to continue in the rocky, hilly land of Peru. So what other methods could be used?

Medcalf got a new idea from the barefoot doctors of China. And that was how the barefoot librarians first appeared in the villages of northern Peru, almost thirty years ago.

The librarians began by going from village to village, lending books to villagers. They helped start The Rural Library Network of Peru.

At first, they were teachers of the village schools which these faraway libraries belonged to. But the teachers were not very interested in the job because it meant a lot of hard work. So, village leaders took on the job themselves.

Today, there are 600 village libraries across Peru. The barefoot librarians who walk up to 15 hours a day with bags of books are their lifeline.

【1】The first paragraph tells us that Leonardo ______.

    A.enjoyed reading books

    B.bought candles from the church

    C.had a lot of books

    D.lived in the church

    A.to grow to love books

    B.to read and write

    C.to bring books to people

    D.to build a new library

    【3】The passage doesn’t mention ______.

    A.where Medcalf met Chinese doctors

B.who worked as village librarians at first

    C.when the barefoot librarians appeared

D.how many village libraries Peru has today

B.car libraries used to be popular in Leonardo’s village

C.teachers were interested in bringing books to villagers
