21、Mercy Baggs is reflecting on her future. “Should I live to 95, I would do another parachute jump, ”she says. She first jumped when she was 77 in honor of her achievements as mayor of the Wiltshire town of Calne. Then she jumped again last March, a day before her 90th birthday, to raise funds for Wiltshire air ambulance.
“This is the thrill of it, ”she says. “You go up, and then that door opens and the wind starts to come through. You free-fall for a long time. ”She has always enjoyed risks since she was a child, when people used to look down on her. But nobody does now.
As a child, she lived in poverty and also went through ups and downs, “I am very sensitive to people who are more unfortunate, ”Baggs says. As a young adult, she joined the British Transport Commission police, but dealing with children who couldn’t find their parents was too much to bear. “I knew what they were going through. I like kids. I really do. ”Later she left the police and worked in Wiltshire council. But no doubt her childhood fed into her actions as a councillor, and later mayor in Calne, where she helped to set up a drop-in centre for young people. The drop-in was one of the causes she raised money for with that first leap out of the plane.
But why a parachute jump? At the time, her late husband, John, was ill with bowel cancer. He said, “I do wish you wouldn’t do it. ”She said, “John, it’s life. I’ve got to do something. ”
Baggs has never been fazed by ageing. She says that she wanted to show that you don’t have to sit on your backside knitting or watching television all the time. There’s a world out there. There’s a life out there. She hopes for at least one more skydive, maybe a go on a 100mph zip wire and “a peaceful end” .

22、That youngsters were glued to online games on their smart phones was a great concern for Ngurang Meena, a school teacher in Nirjuli. The 30-year-old social science teacher, who ran the Ngurang Learning Institute, an adult literacy centre, said that she felt disheartened when she read student papers. "The graph of student performance is falling every year. It breaks my heart whenever I see answer sheets-basic grammar skills are missing and there's an absence of any cohesive(连贯性的)expression. They lack guidance and reading culture is almost zero," Meena said. When her school and the centre she ran had to close due to infectious diseases, she planned to do something to solve the problem.
Inspired by a similar proposal in Mizoram, Meena set up a bookshelf with around 80 books as well as some benches on the side of the road in Nirjuli on August 30th, 2020, where passers-by could spend time reading. The selections included motivational books, biographies and novels as well as comics for young children. "I have to please the children with sweets to sit and read, but that is okay." she laughed.
Meena's bookshelf became a hit among youngsters who spent hours in the reading corner. Within two months, her effort became the talk of the town.
Now, generous contributions of books come in from the public and she is even receiving requests to set up such libraries in other parts of the state, including one in the capital, Itanagar. Since the tiny libraries are far from the main town, she also lends books out to those who want to read at home.
"I never thought that this would become such a big inspiration," Meena said. "Since childhood, we have been told that books are our best friends. The next generation of kids is focused on games and other things. I don't want them to head on the wrong track," she added.

23、If you don’t have the space or time to have a garden in the earth, you still can grow a significant amount of healthy, tasty food...in containers. Any sunny spot will do, whether it’s in your yard or inside your apartment. Not only is growing a container garden possible, but it’s fun and fairly easy to grow nearly anything grown in a conventional garden.
In some ways, gardening in containers is easier than gardening in the ground. There are fewer, if any, weeds. Diseases also are easier to avoid, because your potting soil is less appropriate to harbor them than ground soil. You need few tools and you don’t need to cultivate the soil. Container gardens, at least the smaller ones, can be moved around and brought indoors when frost threatens. You can even garden sitting down if you like!
There are two container options. The first is what I’ll call traditional containers, which consist of anything that can hold some soil and has a hole in the bottom to drain excess water. The second option is self-watering containers, which arrived on the market a few years ago. They have a reservoir for water that is connected to the soil in the rest of the container, which ensures that the water is continually available to the growing plants. As long as there’s water in the reservoir, soil throughout the container is evenly moist.
Looking for a way to cut back on how often I had to water my container garden, I tried self-watering containers and found that I needed to water much less often. Self-watering containers greatly simplify things. If there is water in the reservoir, there’s enough water in the soil, period. Simply refill the reservoir before it’s empty — unless rain is in the forecast. If excess water flows out the overflow hole(s), it will take valuable nutrients with it.
Best of luck with your new versatile, low-maintenance container garden!

24、In the early nineteenth century in Britain, many improvements were made in medicine. Illnesses that had been deadly a few years before were now curable. However, Surgeons had one problem. They had restricted access to dead bodies to dissect (解剖), which was the only way that they could learn about the flesh and bones inside the body and the only way to teach new surgeons to carry out operations.
The job of finding these dead bodies was carried out by an unpleasant group of people called “body snatchers”. They went into graveyards at night and dug up any recently buried bodies. Then they took the bodies to the medical schools and sold them. A body could be sold for between£5 and 10, which was a lot of money at that time.
The most famous of these body snatchers was a man from Edinburgh called William Burke. He was different because he did not just dig up bodies from graveyards. He got greedy and thought of an easier way to find bodies. Instead of digging them up, he killed the poorer guests in his small hotel. Dr. Knox, the respected surgeon he worked for, never asked why all the bodies he brought him had been strangled (勒死).
Burke was eventually arrested and put on trial in 1829. The judge showed no mercy to him and his punishment was to be hanged. Appropriately, his body was given to the medical school and he ended up on the dissecting table, just like his victims.
Now, over 180 years later, surgeons do not need the help of criminals to learn their skills. However, the science of surgery could not have developed without their rather gruesome help.
【1】What problem did the British surgeons in the early 19th century face?

25、Personality is one of the most interesting ways in which people are different from one another. But where does our personality come from? Are we ________ with it or does it change as we get older? A great deal of research into personality indicates that people’s personalities are more or less ________ before they are born. However, not everyone is ________. Psychologist Sanjay Srivastava and a team of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, have just completed a large-scale study into personality. The researchers evaluated data from 132, 515 adults aged between 21 and 60. The team focused on five personality traits—what scientists call “The Big Five”. These are:
1. Conscientiousness—how careful, thorough and self-disciplined are you?
2.________ —how considerate and helpful are you?
3. Neuroticism—how self-conscious and tense are you?
4. Openness—how ________ , imaginative and open to new experiences are you?
5. Extraversion—how sociable and energetic are you?
What they found contradicted long-held assumptions about ________ personalities are set. Conscientiousness, a trait marked by organization and discipline and linked to success at work and in relationships, was found to increase through the age ranges studied, with the most ________ occurring in a person’s twenties. Similarly, agreeableness, a trait associated with being warm, generous and helpful, contradicted the theory that personalities don’t change after the age of 30.________, people in the study showed the most change in agreeableness during their thirties and continued to improve through their sixties.
The changes in these two traits revealed in the study seem to ________ the experiences that people tend to have at certain stages of their lives. Common sense tells us that people become more responsible and conscientious as they ________ and become better at managing their jobs and relationships. Similarly, agreeableness changes most in people’s thirties when many of them are raising a family and take on the role of ________. Openness showed small ________ in both men and women over time, a change that indicates less interest in forming new relationships, and reflects the tendency we have as we get older to spend more time with a small group of well-known relatives and friends, and less time going out and meeting ________ people.
The personality traits were ________ consistent between men and women, except for neuroticism and extraversion, with young women scoring higher than young men in both. However, the difference in neuroticism is only apparent in youth and young adulthood, and the gap between men and women in both neuroticism and extraversion ________ as people age.
