  • 21、The Appleton Club is the focal point of undergraduate ministry in The Memorial Church. The Appleton Club provides a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for undergraduates to grow and develop as faithful Christians as they grow and develop as intellectuals and professionals. We focus on building community through worship, study, and service, as well as through social gatherings and outings. All are welcome!

For details on all the activities of The Appleton Club, or to be added to our e-mail list, contact Epps Fellow Nathaniel Katz at nathaniel_katz@harvard.edu or 617-496-1426. You can also visit us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/memorialchurch.

Our life together is centered around three weekly gatherings:

    Sunday Night Student Service

    9:00 p.m., Appleton Chapel

Every Sunday night we gather for a “come as you are” worship service that includes the celebration of Holy Communion. Wednesday Night Discussion Group

9:00 p.m., Sparks House, 21 Kirkland Street, Cambridge

Food will be provided.

    Friday Afternoon Social Gatherings

4:00 p.m., Sparks House, 21 Kirkland Street, Cambridge

Every Friday afternoon we gather as a community to check in and wind down from the busy week. How to Make a Good Cup of Tea

In his essay, A Nice Cup of Tea, George Orwell laid out 11 basic principles to make a good cup of tea, from warming the pot beforehand to stirring the leaves before pouring. He insisted that “the water should be actually boiling at the moment of impact, which means that one should keep it on the flame while one pours”.

1 “Some people add that one should only use water that has been freshly brought to the boil, but I have never noticed that it makes any difference,” he went on to state.

However, on that point at least, it seems he was wrong. William Gorman, one of Britain’s leading tea experts, has now put forward that the water used for making a cup of tea should never be boiled more than once. “Usually when people’s tea goes cold they reboil the kettle and make another cup. 2 You need freshly drawn water for a good cup because reboiling it takes all the oxygen and nitrogen out of it, ruining its layered flavor.”

Besides, Mr. Gorman advocates another practice of making tea, one that Orwell would surely have protested. Mr. Gorman said, “3 When you microwave tea, all you’re doing is just moving the molecules around and getting it back up to a decent temperature. It is not impacting the flavor at all.”

4 In some countries teapots are fitted with little dangling baskets under the spout, to catch the stray leaves, which are supposed to be harmful. Actually one can swallow tea-leaves in considerable quantities without ill effect, and if the tea is not loose in the pot, it never infuses properly. They agree by doing this, you actually risk losing a good cup of tea.

A.Beware of the high temperature of a microwave oven.

B.But doing this you will give yourself a dull cup of tea.

C.What he didn’t insist on was that the water should be boiled just once.

D.However, they both argue against the use of tea-imprisoning devices.

E.He said the milk should be poured into the cup last, not first.

F.A better solution is to heat it with microwave for 10s.

Madison stared through the window and watched a bird fly across the sky. She thought, “How I wish I were a bird, with total freedom and no math class to sit in.” She sighed and wondered how warm it was outside. She thought of her horse, Star. She planned to brush him before riding him after school. Somewhere, someone was saying her name, but it seemed so faraway. The bird continued to float through the air.

“Madison, Madison! Hand in the math homework! “

Madison jumped. She turned back toward the class to find everyone laughing. It turned out that she was daydreaming again.

Madison searched her schoolbag, but found no homework. Mr. Smith was about to criticize her when Doctor Landon came in. He was a veterinarian (兽医) and would deliver a speech as part of the Career Exploration program.

Madison looked at the clock. One more hour and it would be time to go home.

She tried to focus as Doctor Landon talked about how important math and science were and how he struggled with them when he was a kid. She glanced out the window and tried to remember where she left her riding boots. Doctor Landon was still talking but she lost track of what he was saying. Then a word caught her attention. Horse. Was he talking about horses? She paid attention as he spoke.

“I love being a veterinarian because I love animals, especially horses and I enjoy freedom. Specializing on horses gave me the chance to be outside all day, moving from place to place in our community. Do any of you have horses?”

Madison raised her hand, “I do! I have a big Quarter Horse.”

“Where do you live?” the doctor asked.

    “On Anderson road.”

    “Is your horse Star?”

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答
