二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   D. Mike Miles hadn’t had a stable job in years. He bounced around from temporary agency to temporary agency, never sure when his last day would be. Sometimes, he lost a job with less than a day’s notice. This was not due to a poor work ethic (职业道德) - from arriving early to staying late, Miles said he did everything he could to leave good impressions on employers in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the US. But because Miles had a criminal record, he was always cut loose when it was time to let staff go.

“It was like walking on eggshells. You just never knew when you’d be gone,” he said.

After his release from prison in 2007, Miles struggled to find stability – both mentally and financially. During this time, he lived in his mother’s house and she helped him raise his daughter. When his mom passed away two years later, Miles said he became more determined than ever to create a healthy environment for his family.

“I’m all she has, and she’s all I have,” he said. “I had to build a whole new relationship with my daughter, while building a whole new life for myself.”

It wasn’t until October 2015, nearly a decade after he got out of prison, that a cousin told Miles about a food company that hires people who have difficulty finding jobs.

Hoping this would clear up what felt like a thick cloud of uncertainty over his future, Miles submitted an application. He got an interview and soon after that, began his new job. His work involves everything from food production to maintenance (保存), not to mention it pays a livable wage of $15 an hour. He said it’s the best job he’s ever had.

Miles’ story is rare in Lancaster, where the poverty rate is around 30 percent – about double the national average. This figure annoyed Charlie Crystle, the co-founder and CEO of the company that gave Miles his job.

Crystle said he wanted to inspire other companies and entrepreneurs (企业家) to rethink their current practices and ignite(引发)conversations about minimum wage and employment opportunities for everyone, including ex-offenders (有犯罪前科的人).

Beyond providing employment and livable wages, the company also helps employees deal with the many challenges of reentry into society. This means anything from helping them find housing and health benefits to changing their schedules.

Miles is now saving for a house. “It doesn’t have to be a big house,” he said. “I just want to be stable.”

1Why did Miles change his occupation frequently?

A.He liked to try new things.

B.He never got asked to stay at jobs long as he had been in jail.

C.He was never able to find a job that he liked.

D.He is a person who is hard to please.

2Which is right according to the test?

A.About 15% of people all over the nation are under the poverty line.

B.The ex-offenders are always treated equally in society.

C.Miles is reluctant to do the job in the food company.

D.Miles’ mother died in 2009 because of lung cancer.

3What can we infer from the last three paragraphs?

A.Miles is not content with his current situation.

B.Miles cares more about a stable life than a big house.

C.The companies and entrepreneurs have agreed to increase the minimum wage level.

D.The local government will help ex-offenders find employment.

  • 27、   Of all the planets, none has captured the world's imagination like Mars. Its reddish colour and changes in brightness over time make the planet an unforgettable sight.

In Cosmos, the television science series from the 1980s, scientist Carl Sagan talked about some traditional ideas about Mars. Some of these ideas are from the English science fiction writer H. G. Well's The War of the Worlds. Others are from the mistaken science of Percival Lowell, the American astronomer who believed intelligent beings lived on Mars. Wells described Martians as threatening. Lowell imagined them as the hopeful engineers of great works. Carl Sagan said that both ideas influenced the public deeply.

Today, Mars continues to excite humans—not as the object of science fiction but of scientific study. Space scientists have collected a wealth of information from spacecrafts that have orbited, landed on and dug into the Martian surface.

The Smithsonian's "Mars Day" offered a chance for people of all ages to touch Mars, or at least a piece of it. Allison and Alycia from Silver Spring, Maryland, brought their children, Grace, Sam, Ryan and Emma. They heard about Mars and its geology from experts. They could see a test version of the Viking landers that reached Mars in July of 1976. They also saw meteorites(陨星)known to have come from the red, or reddish planet. Eight-year-old Sam learned that the ancient description of Mars as red is not exactly right. He said, “It's actually orangish more than red and it's also kind of brown, too.” Emma is six. She learned about the volcanic activity that has shaped the surface of Mars. She said, “The closest thing to Mars—the stuff—is from volcanoes mostly.”

“Mars Day” offered Allison and Alycia's children a chance to learn more about a world that they are very likely to set foot on within their lifetimes.

1What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.Why Martians were considered threatening.

B.Why Mars has captured the world's imagination.

C.What people generally thought of Mars in the past.

D.How H. G. Wells got the idea for his science fiction.

2It is implied in Paragraph 3 that_________.

A.today's space scientists still know nothing about Mars

B.today's space scientists are very interested in Mars

C.science fiction films are no longer set in Mars

D.space scientists haven't made any progress in knowing Mars

3Sam would probably agree that _________.

    A.Mars is not really red

B.no meteorites have come from Mars

C.Mars cannot be described as a little brown

D.the ancient description of Mars' colour is true

4What is the writer's attitude towards the idea that humans will set foot on Mars?

A.He thinks it may happen in this year.

B.He thinks it will always remain a dream.

C.He thinks it will come true within hundreds of years.

D.He thinks it may happen in the following decades.

  • 28、Finding a job you are truly enthusiastic about can feel a lot like falling in love. You become excited, and you can feel yourself changing for the better. But what happens when you get used to it? 【1】. In some cases, when relationships last for this long (with a person or a career) it can be difficult to tell if you still want to be in it for the long run. Here are some signs that you’ve found the one you love.

    【2】.

There is always a constant stream of work coming in. But you don’t let it paralyze you. There is so much to be done because you keep getting it done. You’re in the work flow, baby. Hemingway always stopped writing when he had more to say. This is you at work. There’s always a to-do list ready to go the next day.

Remind yourself of the “bigger picture”.

There are always going to be little ordinary tasks that have to get finished-even if we don’t want to be the one to finish them. 【3】 . It’s even easier to get focused on how difficult and time consuming the little projects can be. But when you love the work you do, you always find a way to see the forest through the trees and remind yourself of what you are working toward.

Get inspired by the people around you.

The things they seem to accomplish can be really impressive. You admire their determination in their work and you want to support them any way you can so that they can keep being awesome. You love what you are all working toward collectively as a team. 【4】. So by admiring the work of others, it’s coming from a place of admiring your own work as well.

Look at your after-work life in terms of work.

【5】: You like your work, so you also like thinking about it outside of office hours. You find yourself solving problems, brainstorming ideas, and thinking in terms of how something in your life relates to something in your work. Like Newton and the apple, sometimes your greatest ideas come to you when you are far from the office.

A.The longer you are in your work, the better you like it

B.There are never enough hours to accomplish everything

C.Typically, when we are feeling good, we see the good in others

D.New is now familiar, and that loving feeling is not as fresh as it once was

E.It’s easy to lose yourself in details of a project without imagining its completion

F.Your mind is still in the office when you don’t have to be there

G.Solutions to difficult problems can be easily sought if you work with office hours in mind

  • 29、Marks &Spencer(M&S) is planning to remove “best before” labels from 300 varieties of fruit and vegetables in its stores to cut food waste. The change will rely on customers using their judgment to determine whether goods are still fine to eat.

The measure, to be rolled out this week, will affect 85% of the supermarket’s fresh pro-duce offering. “Best before” labels differ from “use by” dates, with the former often merely a measure of aesthetics(美学), while the latter tending to indicate a safety risk if ignored. “Best before” labels were meant to help consumers, but instead were blamed for creating mountains of waste from perfectly eatable food.

Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket chain, had already announced the end of best before dates on its own-brand fruit and vegetables as far back as 2018, while the German supermarket Lidl also says it does not include best before information to reduce food waste. Now M&S is doing the same, with the aim to halve(减半) food waste from its products by 2030 com-pared with 2018. Achieving those targets would put it in line with the UK’s commitment to meet the United Nations’ goal of halving food waste by 2030 compared with 2007.

Reducing food waste is a vital part of tackling carbon emissions associated with farming and food distribution(分配). WRAP, a food waste charity, estimates that as much 45%of global greenhouse gas emissions can only be tackled by changing the way we make and consume products and food. It said that removing dates on fresh fruit and vegetables can save the equal of 7 million shopping baskets of food a year.

Catherine David, a director at WRAP, said, “We’re thrilled to see this move from M&S, which will reduce food waste and help tackle the climate crisis. We urge more supermarkets to get ahead on food waste by cutting date labels from fresh produce, allowing people to use their own judgment.”

【1】What does Marks &Spencer intend to do?

A.Maintain the safety of their products.

B.Ask customers to pick out eatable produce.

C.Sell its own-brand fruit and vegetables.

D.Remove “use by” labels from its fresh produce.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “rolled out” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Denied.

    B.Canceled.

    C.Introduced.

    D.Examined.

【3】What does Catherine David call on more supermarkets to do?

    A.Meet government regulations.

    B.Improve food safety standards.

    C.Increase sales of fresh produce.

D.Get rid of dates labels on fresh produce.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.M&S’s new move to reduce food waste.

B.Tesco follows M&S’s lead on food labels.

C.M&S calls for a fight against climate crisis.

D.Effective methods to protect the environment.
