二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Holding a cell phone against your ear or storing it in your pocket may be dangerous to your health. This explains a warning that cell phone manufacturers(制造商) include in the small print (印刷字体) that is often ignored when a new phone is bought. Apple, for example, doesn't want iPhones to come closer to you than 1.5 centimeters; Research In Motion, Black Berry, a manufacturer, recommends 2.5 centimeters.

If health issues arise from cell phone use, the possible effects are huge. Voice calls Americans chat on cell phones 2.26 trillion(万亿)minutes annually earn $109 billion for the wireless carriers.

Devra Davis, an expert who has worked for the University of Pittsburgh, has published a book about cell phone radiation, “Disconnect”. The book surveys scientific research and concludes the question is not settled.

Brain cancer is a concern that Ms.Davis examines. Over all, there has not been an increase in its incidence since cell phones arrived. But the average masks an increase in brain cancer in the 20 to 29 age group and a drop for the older population.

“Most cancers have multiple causes,” she says, but she points to laboratory research that suggests low energy radiation could damage cells that could possibly lead to cancer.

Children are more vulnerable(易受伤的)to radiation than adults, Ms.Davis and other scientists point out. Radiation that penetrates only five centimeters into the brain of an adult will reach much deeper into the brains of children because their skulls are thinner and their brains contain more absorptive fluid(易吸收的液体). “No studies have yet been completed on cell phone radiation and children,” she says.

Henry Lai, a research professor in the bioengineering department at the University of Washington, began laboratory radiation studies in 1980 and found that rats exposed to radiation had damaged DNA in their brains.

Ms.Davis recommends using wired headsets or the phone's speaker. Children should text rather than call, she said, and pregnant women should keep phones away from the abdomen(腹部).

【1】Why is the warning in the small print?

A.They don't want the users to pay attention to it.

B.There is not enough space for the warning.

C.They think people will not care about it.

D.The warning is not important at all.

【2】Why do children easily be affected by radiation?

    A.Because they haven't grown up.

B.Because they are too young to protect themselves.

C.Because they use cell phones more often than adults.

D.Because their skulls are thinner and their brains are easily hurt.

【3】What can we conclude from the last paragraph?

A.Pregnant women should keep cell phones away.

B.People should use cell phones in the correct way.

C.If you are a child, you'd better text than make phone calls.

D.When you use a cell phone, use a wired headset or the phone's speaker.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Be careful when using cell phones.

B.Don't hold your cell phone against your ear.

C.Rats exposed to radiation have damaged DNA in their brains.

D.Low energy radiation could damage cells that could lead to cancer.

  • 22、When my son joined the high-school wrestling team last fall during COVID-19, my 83-year-old dad also asked me to ask if they needed an assistant coach. I wondered how the coach would feel about my son’s grandfather asking to help, given that it was over 60 years ago that he wrestled? “He wrestled in university,” I said.

A few days before the first practice, I e-mailed the coach to tell him that my son’s grandfather was 83. I was nervous. What if he wasn’t what they were looking for? In the e-mail, I assured the coach he was in good health. I pointed out that his hearing aids had sat unused for over five years. He just didn’t like wearing them.

As I dropped my dad and 16-year-old son off for their first wrestling practice, my dad turned to my son, “I am not going to embarrass you, am I?”

“Not too much,” my son replied.

At the first practice, Dad met the coach and told him he would do anything he needed. When he and my son returned, they were both overjoyed. Dad made the team, but “God, I wish I could hear the coach!” he said. One day, he realized he forgot his hearing aids as I dropped him off. We turned back. “I need these to hear what the coach is talking about,” he reminded me.

In his free time, Dad went to the library and he borrowed the book Wrestling for Dummies. He read up on different moves and the scoring system. “It is a lot different from my university days,” he told me.

The coach gave him a team sweatshirt with the logo of the school on the front and “Wrestling” on the back. He wears the sweatshirt to every practice.

COVID-19 has not allowed me to watch any of the practices or meets. I rely on my father to give me the play-by-play of what is happening in the wrestling room. He is energetic. I’m proud to be a wrestling daughter.

【1】What do we know about the author’s dad?

A.He still has good hearing in his 80s.

B.He was a wrestler at university.

C.He taught his grandson wrestling at home.

D.He lied about his age when applying for the role.

【2】What happened after the author’s dad joined the wrestling team?

A.The author’s son felt extremely embarrassed.

B.He refused to wear his hearing aids during practice.

C.He tried to improve his wrestling knowledge.

D.He offered to design the team sweatshirt.

【3】What is the author’s attitude toward her dad joining the wrestling team?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Anxious.

    C.Opposed.

    D.Reserved.

  • 23、When pro-golfer Umi Jai first started competing against men, she felt frightened. They didn't want to play with her, she says and they didn’t take her seriously. But then in her first match she won.

After that she had all the confidence she needed to keep playing and beating the boys. Now as the only professional female golfer in Senegal, she competes almost exclusively against men.

“Now I'm used to playing with men. I train in the morning, noon and night. I'm in the gym three or four times per week. So that also gives me more confidence.” She said. Jai turned professional seven years ago.

She’s placed in dozens of competitions around the world including in Thailand, Kenya and South Africa. Her accomplishments are particularly noteworthy considering Senegal is a conservative Muslim nation, where women are discouraged from participating in sports especially at the professional level. “When you're Muslim, we prefer to keep girls at home to find them a husband and make them a housewife.” She told journalist.

In 2020 the Senegalese Golf Federation agreed to help Jai establish a golf academy, in preparation for the 2026 summer youth Olympics in Dakar. It would be the first Olympic games to ever be held on African soil. The project was postponed due to Covid, but it's expected to restart this year.

Jai will be tasked with training Senegal’s first ever national team, with a specific focus on preparing the next generation of female golfers including her daughter.

“Girls will be part of it I mean on an equal basis like boys, and that would be something that I think we are prepared and committed to do. And Jai also has that vision and committed to promote a girl to give them opportunity, as a girl I mean, to help them get to the level that they can be.” Said the executive director of Senegalese Golf Federation.

  • 24、Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.

However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.

This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.

When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.

Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent hard work won’t ensure you the level of success you may want, but it will ensure that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

    【1】Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ________.

    A.the meaning of success

    B.the reasons for success

    C.the standards of success

    D.the importance of success

【2】In Paragraph 2, the underlined word “that” refers to ______.

    A.setting a practical goal

    B.being good at something

    C.putting in more time

    D.succeeding in life

【3】Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ______.

A.it takes a lot of time to succeed

    B.work makes one feel pain

C.one gives up his work easily

D.one tends to enjoy his work

【4】What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A.Successful people like to show their great skills.

B.People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.

C.People need to achieve success at the cost of life.

D.It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.
