四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Food is a major part of every culture. After all, everyone needs to eat! But each country has its own traditions on what people eat and when.

    Egypt

Egyptians commonly start the day with a drink, sometimes going with bread. Breakfast can be eaten any time after this but before the day’s main meal. In the past, this main meal was served at around 3:00 p.m. But now people work longer hours and eat when they get home at around 6:00 p.m. Dinner parties are held later, around 9:00 p.m.

Most Egyptian meals include bread or ice, cooked vegetables and beans or meat.

    France

France is known for its fine cooking, and its people take food seriously. Most eat three meals a day at fixed times and never snack between meals. Breakfast is a light meal of bread and coffee. They eat lunch at around 1:00 p.m. and a dinner with multiple courses after 8:00 p.m.

The French consider eating a social activity. Eating alone is hard to see, and eating while doing something else is unheard-of. The French take time to enjoy their meals and visitors should do the same.

    Brazil

Like the French, Brazilians usually eat a light breakfast. Lunch, the largest meal of the day, usually consists of meat, rice, potatoes, beans and vegetables. Between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., people enjoy a smaller meal with their families.

Brazilians don’t mind eating a hurried or light meal and sometimes buy food from street carts (手推车). But they always finish eating before walking away.

    The United States

American’s ancestors came from many countries, so American eating habits differ. Some take time to prepare and eat a hot breakfast. Others take a bagel (面包圈) while rushing out the door or just_______For lunch, most Americans eat a sandwich or leftovers. Traditionally, families got together for a large evening meal around 6:00, but now busy schedules force many families to eat in turns. American restaurant servings tend to be huge. But you don’t have to finish them; taking leftovers home is common.

  • 25、

On Nov.16, seven astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) woke up to an alarm (警报). A Russian missile (导弹) test had just bombed a satellite into more than 1,500 pieces of space debris (残骸). Some got very close to the ISS.

NASA says space debris like this can travel at more than 28,000 km/h. That’s much faster than a bullet (子弹) (about 3,500 km/h). Even a pea-sized piece of debris could “wipe out” a space station or kill an astronaut if he or she is doing a spacewalk, says Live Science.

Since the 1950s, humans have sent thousands of rockets and satellites into space. Many are still there, and we now face an ever-increasing problem of space rubbish. In 2006, for example, National Geographic reported that a tiny piece of space rubbish hit the ISS, taking a small piece of glass out of a window. In June of this year, a piece of debris ran into one of the station’s robotic arms, which are just like the arms of a robot, and left a hole.

Scientists are trying different ways to deal with the problem. One way is to use a huge net. In 2018, the UK’s Survey Space Center caught some space rubbish with a net in an experiment. It first found the debris, and then collected it with a net and a harpoon (鱼叉).

Another way is to use robotic arms. Clear Space 1, the European Space Agency’s task to clean space rubbish, is going to be sent into space in 2025. It will use robotic arms to catch debris. This plans to throw the debris into Earth’s atmosphere (大气层), where it will burn up as it falls because of strong friction (摩擦).

【1】The bomb of the Russian missile mainly causes ________ according to the article.

    A.plants

    B.soil

    C.food

    D.space debris

【2】According to NASA, space debris moves ________ as fast as a bullet.

    A.eight times

    B.nine times

    C.seven times

    D.six times

【3】What happens to a space station if it gets “wiped out”?

    A.It gets cleaned.

    B.It gets rebuilt.

    C.It gets broken.

    D.It gets old.

【4】The best ways to deal with space debris is ________ according to the article.

    a. throwing it away into the planet

    b. throwing it into the sun to burn up

    c. collecting it with nets and harpoons

    d. throwing it into Earth’s atmosphere to burn up

    A.ad

    B.cd

    C.ab

    D.bd

【5】What can we infer from Paragraph 3-4?

A.There is nothing we can do to deal with space debris.

B.The astronauts are quite safe in space even there is space debris.

C.More and more tasks are failing because we don’t want to cause space rubbish.

D.Thousands of old rockets and satellites are turning into space rubbish for years.

Recently, researchers have reported on new ways to break down different kinds of plastics. The new studies could lead to easier high-quality (高质量的) recycling, and help deal with toxic (有毒的) plastic pollution.

The world is being covered by plastic, but only about 9% of plastic products are ever recycled. Every year, over 7.72 trillion kilograms of plastic finds its way into the world’s oceans. But bacteria (细菌) may help recycle, even when humans don’t.

Bacteria are small living things—so small that we need a microscope (显微镜) to see them. Bacteria feed themselves in many different ways. Some bacteria can “eat” other things by changing the chemicals ( 化学物质) in those things into something that will help the bacteria grow.

The secret to this is enzymes (). Bacteria use enzymes to cause chemical changes. Enzymes can work like a pair of scissors, cutting and breaking apart other materials.

Most people know PET plastic. It is used in water and soda bottles. About 63.5 billion kilograms of PET plastic is produced every year. Most PET is thrown away, but even when it is recycled, it can't be made into new bottles. Usually it’s turned into products like carpets (地毯).

In 2012, in the decaying (腐烂的) leaves, scientists discovered an enzyme called LCC that slowly breaks apart PET plastics. Years later, scientists working at the French company Carbios chose LCC from nearly 100,000 enzymes. It was the best at breaking down PET.

But the scientists wanted to improve LCC. They studied the enzyme and the way it attacked the PET. By testing thousands of small changes to the enzyme, they came up with a new kind of LCC. The new kind can be alive at higher temperatures and can eat through PET very quickly.

The process turns the PET plastic back into the materials that it was made from.

Those materials can then be used again to make new bottles or other products.

The researchers compared their new LCC with the old enzyme, and were satisfied with the results. When the environment was just right, the new LCC was able to break up 90% of the PET in just ten hours. The old enzyme took about 20 hours and only broke up half of the PET.

1How much PET plastic is produced every year?

    A.About 7.72 trillion kilograms. B.About 63.5 billion kilograms.

    C.About 100 thousand kilograms. D.About 2 hundred kilograms.

2What do you know about the bacteria from the passage?

A.Bacteria can be seen with our eyes.

B.Bacteria can break down other materials directly.

C.Bacteria use enzymes to create physical changes in things.

D.Bacteria are small living things that feed on unusual forms of “food”.

3According to the passage, what is the relationship between PET plastic and LCC?

A.The earliest LCC couldn’t break down PET plastic.

B.LCC can help stop PET plastic from breaking down.

C.PET plastic can now be recycled faster because of a new kind of LCC.

D.The used PET plastic will become another kind of pollution because of LCC.

4Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

    A.Bacteria: Growing by eating chemicals

B.Enzymes: Working like a pair of scissors

C.PET: Being widely to make water and soda bottles

D.LCC: Leading to easier high-quality PET plastic recycling

He began to smile. "My parents used to say it to me. When we say ‘I wish you enough’, we want the other person to have a life filled with enough good things." He stopped for a moment and continued, "I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
