24、At present, more and more people are crazy about traveling. Why do people travel? “The world is so big that I want to have a look.” many people would say. But traveling abroad now means much more than that for the growing number of Chinese tourists. Of course it offers us good opportunities to meet people from other countries, learn about their culture and customs.
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), more than 1 billion people traveled to another country in 2012. In 2012, Chinese people traveled abroad 30 percent more than in 2011. In 2014, the number of outbound tourists has reached over 100 million for the first time. Compared with 2013, it has increased by 19.49%. Chinese has ranked first as the main source of the world tourism according to the report. The prosperity (繁荣) of the tourism industry can also bring both our country and foreign countries great economic benefits(经济利益). Chinese people usually travel abroad in large tourist groups and visit several countries in one trip.
Chinese people don’t just travel for sightseeing. The China International Travel Service Company said that all their tour trips sold out a month before Christmas Day. Stores offered discounts (打折) during that time, so shopping in Europe and the United States is popular among Chinese travelers.
In December, China is going through a very cold winter. So many people like to go to some countries in Southeast Asia because the weather there is quite pleasant.
The improvement of living standards means more Chinese can travel abroad. But many of them don’t have a sense of public manners. A report by Living Social website in March 2012 even listed Chinese as the world’s second worst tourists.

25、Nearly half of elementary and high schools in the US use the Presidential Fitness Test. It checks kids’ fitness levels. Students are tested at least twice a year. In 1956, US President Eisenhower created the test, and it has been a tradition in schools since 1966.
There are five activities in the test: sit-ups(仰卧起坐), push-ups(俯卧撑), sit and reach, endurance run or walk and shuttle run(折返跑). Students who get scores at or above 85 percent on all the activities can get a Presidential Physical Fitness Award.
The test encourages students to live a healthy and active life. Students taking the test are really testing their limits, according to the US National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
China has a similar test: the physical education(PE) test. Beginning at the age of 7, students in China are tested twice a year to check if they are healthy and strong. They also finish activities like the endurance run, sit-ups and the shuttle run.
However, unlike students in the US who get awards, Chinese students get points in PE tests. The highest score is 100. For junior school students, the PE test is more important because it is worth 30 to 40 points in the entrance exam for senior high school. Many newspapers have an advice page. So does the school newspaper of Xinhan Middle School. Angela Wang is the editor responsible for the page. Students like to write to her for advice.
Dear Angela,
I’m 16 and I want to leave school this year. My parents say it is too early and that I should be trying to get into high school. I want to work at McDonald’s. Then I can start earning money to buy things.
Jane
Dear Jane,
Your parents are right. It would be better if you can complete as much of your education as possible. Real independence won’t come from earning 150 yuan a week. It will come from the qualifications(资历、学历)and experience that you would gain by staying at school for a couple more years.
Angela
Dear Angela,
My parents and I have been fighting a lot recently. I’m 16, but they still treat me like a kid. My mom calls me 20 times if I don’t get home before 7 p.m. I tried talking to them about this, but they never change. What can I do?
Jim
Dear Jim,
Being angry and standing against your parents will not solve the problem. Try communicating with them from their point of view. Make a list of things you wish to do and another list of your parents’ possible concerns about them. Let your parents know you have learned to be responsible for yourself.
Angela
Dear Angela,
I am having an issue with my Chemistry teacher. She is super nice to my classmates but behaves completely differently towards me. She blames me for things I didn’t do. What should I do?
