21、Over time, the custom of kissing developed as a way for adults to express their love and affection for one another. The roots of this form of affection can be traced back to primitive times, when mothers fondled their children, much as mothers do today.
Much later, in the sixth century, society apparently accepted the custom of kissing between adults as an expression of their affection. Not surprisingly, France first accepted kissing in courtship (求爱). There, figure dancing was popular, and each dance was sealed with a kiss.
The custom of kissing swept from France through Europe to Russia, where Russian nobility loved to imitate the French. Eventually, the kiss was incorporated into marriage ceremonies, and today lip locks couples into sweet matrimony.
The custom of kissing today, as well as in ancient times, serves to pay homage to another. Early Romans kissed each other on the mouth or on the eyes to greet one another in a manner they thought to be dignified. One Roman emperor even ranked a person's importance by the body part he was allowed to kiss. He allowed important nobles to kiss his lips, less important ones to kiss his hands, and the least important ones to kiss his feet.
In Russia, the highest sign of recognition from the Crown meant a kiss from the Tsar himself. Today, natives of many African tribes pay homage to their Chief by kissing the ground over which he has walked.

22、Spend five minutes in a tropical city and you'll be running into the nearest air-conditioned refuge. In some countries across Asia, air conditioning (AC) is increasingly being considered a necessity. But one architecture firm, T3 Architecture Asia, is trying to use a different way to keep cool. The firm has offices in Vietnam and France, which specializes in back — to — basics “bio-climatic architectures. By making use of the climate and vegetation(植物), the firm can naturally create a comfortable indoor climate.
In cooperation with the World Bank, the company built an affordable apartment building in Ho Chi Minh City, which houses 350 families in a neighborhood where AC bills are to be avoided.
Covered open-air corridors(走廊), ventilated(通风的)roofs, fiber-glass insulation(隔热材料)and the use of natural materials meant the building offered both natural light and ventilation.
"We try to avoid big glass facades(正面)facing east or west, because that would make the building like an oven (烤炉)in a tropical climate,” the manager of the firm, Gallavardin, said. "If you can take advantage of the main wind stream and have smart sun-protection equipment, you can do it — you can really design buildings that need no air conditioning in a hot place.”
Gallavardin explained that the temperature in a typical bio-climatic T3 building is naturally about 22℃, cooler than the outside temperature, with the ceiling fan doing the rest of the work. Since the first project, Gallavardin has built several luxurious bio-climatic hotels, a concept restaurant, and even his own green office for the T3 team.
In China, American architecture firm Perkins &Will took a bio-climatic approach to the new Shanghai Natural History Museum—while the building provides air conditioning in gallery areas to protect the artworks from humidity. It also has automated windows and skylights to naturally ventilate public areas.
【1】How does the firm make the building comfortable in hot weather?
A.By using electric fans on the ceilings.
B.By using the weather and plants around.
C.By using a special kind of technology.
D.By asking the families to live together.
【2】What is the advantage for families living in the apartment building in Ho Chi Minh City?
A.They feel like a big family.
B.The building is free of charge.
C.They can take care of each other.
D.They don't have to pay for AC.
【3】What will happen to the building if big glass facades face cast or west in a tropical climate?
A.The building will become very hot.
B.The building will let in more fresh air.
C.The building will become much cooler.
D.The building will need no air conditioning.
【4】What could be the best title for the text?
A.Green Solutions to Cool Buildings.
B.Buildings Without Air Conditioning.
C.Strange Ways to Put up Buildings.

24、You can make turkey any time of year, which usually also means that there are turkey leftovers.
【1】 They can be made into turkey sandwiches, and turkey vegetable soup, to name just a few. This year I cooked two turkeys so I would have leftovers to make use of.
If you have cooked your turkey in the past and it was dry, I’m willing to bet you either overcooked it or didn’t let it rest. You need a good thermometer. 【2】 Probe (探针) style is a personal preference. My Meater is Bluetooth enabled, and I can set it up on my iPad or iPhone; it will tell me how long I need and how long to rest.
Also, resting is so important when cooking meats. I have written about resting meat so many times. I will always lightly cover my turkey in foil and let it rest for 15-20 minutes at a very minimum. When you heat the molecules or cells, they begin to vibrate and move faster and faster. 【3】 Otherwise, all the moisture (水分) will leak. If you allow molecules to settle down and relax, the muscle tissue will keep that moisture, and when you cut into the bird, it will still be moist.
How hot you cook your turkey will also determine how moist it is. The temperatures I pull the turkey out of the oven at and when it is ready to cut are different. Proteins, will continue to cook even after you have removed them from the heat source, related to the molecules vibrating or moving rapidly. 【4】
After you finish enjoying your feast, the delicately cooked turkey, you might have a lot of leftovers. 【5】 It feels comforting, because you can not only enjoy the soup but you’re using up the leftovers.
A.I enjoy the wonderful taste of turkey.
B.There are so many uses for turkey leftovers.
C.The faster the vibration is, the more heat is produced.
D.So you should let them calm down before cutting into the meat.
E.You can transform the turkey leftovers into chicken noodle soup.
F.I always recommend digital ones because they are always more accurate.
G.Therefore, you’d better cut the turkey while the molecules are still vibrating.
