21、When researching New Year’s resolutions in the 1980s, the psychologist John Norcross found over 50% of Americans made resolution. After 6 months, only 40% had stuck with it. Two years later, the number had dropped to 19%. Still, we keep telling ourselves we can lose weight, save money, and go to the gym.
It turns out that timing is important in determining whether we succeed. In May, 2012, the behavioral economist Katherine Milkman, at a social science gathering, found herself in a discussion about “turning points”. She said, “I had a strong instinct that turning points are effective moments that feel like a new beginning.”
So she teamed up with two colleagues, Jason Riis and Hengchen Dai, to see if the “turning points” idea held any merit. In follow-up studies, they found fresh starts do push us to change our behavior. With those, researchers suspect, comes a sense of optimism, the promise of “a new me,” as Milkman put it. To test that theory, her team looked at daily Google searches for the term “diet” over 9 years, finding a predictable cycle: they topped at the start of any given week, month, or year, then gradually declined. The largest increase — 82% above the baseline — occurred immediately after New Year’s.
The college gym attendance is no exception: shooting up in January and decreasing in the following months. Smaller spikes occurred at the beginning of each week, each month, and each term.
Finally, the researchers investigated commitments on the website stick, which allows you to set a goal and contractually determine the consequences for failing to attain it. Tracking 43,000 people over 2.5 years, they found the greatest number of contracts were signed at the start of the new year. Throughout the year, each week and each month had a mini-cycle of its own, with the beginning of the week corresponding to a 63% increase. “Every week brings a new opportunity,” Riis says. “And people take advantage of that whether or not they know it.”

22、In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social-progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistake belief that—one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

A. try their best to win
B. highly value competition
C. are strongly against competition

A. Self-worth relys on winning.
B. Competition leads to unfriendly relationship.
C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
23、Many people have heard bee populations are declining due to such threats as pesticides(杀虫剂). And many understand bees are important to plant pollination(授粉). Yet, according to a study led by Utah State University ecologist Joseph Wilson, few are aware of the wide diversity of bees and other pollinators beyond such species as honeybees.
“The U.S. Postal Service recently put out its Protect Pollinator series, which features only the European honeybee and the monarch butterfly,” says Wilson, assistant professor of biology at USU’s Tooele campus. “A social media commenter observed that using these two species on a campaign to protect pollinators is similar to focusing on chickens to save birds. It’s a pretty good comparison, actually.”
Wilson, with colleagues Matthew Forister of the University of Nevada-Reno, published findings in the Sept. 5, 2017, online edition of Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.
“In our recent survey, 99 percent of our respondents said bees are important, yet only 14 percent were able to guess within 1,000, the actual number of bee species in the United States,” he says. “Most people guessed around 50 species of bees, while the correct number is about 4,000 known species.” Further, when shown images of varied insects, many people were unable to distinguish bees from non-bees.
“A challenge with lack of knowledge about bees is you can’t protect what you’re now aware of,” Wilson says. “We could be losing species or causing decline and not even know it.”
Public education is key to encouraging conservation efforts, he says. “Because conservation efforts require substantial public support, it’s important that the public understand bees and what needs to be done to protect these species,” Wilson says. “Education is the key to understanding bee declines and protecting our pollinators.”

24、I recently heard a wonderful new parenting phrase that I suspect is going to become a regular addition to my vocabulary. The phrase is “benign neglect”, and it refers to leaving one’s children free to make their own decisions, control their own time, and generally act like adults.
Jeni Marinucci, who first introduced me to this phrase, described how she treats her children almost as if they were hearty houseplants: “They should be watered abundantly and you should ensure they get plenty of sunshine. But otherwise, just let them be.” From a young age, her children have been making their own hair and other appointments (after she showed them how to do it). Similarly, their time is their own to use as they wish. On a lazy Saturday, it’s up to them to figure out a ride to the movies and how to make breakfast and lunch for themselves.
The “benign neglect approach” may sound extreme to some readers. Indeed, one commenter on Marinucci’s article accused her of neglecting to raise her children at all, which seems a bit uncomfortable. It’s true that her approach would not work for everyone, but at the very least she recognizes what so many parents these days fail to acknowledge — that our beloved children will spend a far greater percentage of their lives as adults than they will as children, so we parents neglect a fundamental requirement of our job if we fail to prepare them for that independence.
I like that “benign neglect” pays attention to the parental side of parenting, and does not focus entirely on the children. However, miracles will only happen if I hand over responsibilities to my growing children. It’s like the old proverb: Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.
【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.Making decisions.
B.Controlling one’s time.
C.The author’s vocabulary.
