二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the general society. Progress indicates a person’s ability to change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things.

However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes more efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish .The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or to see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadets, such as mobile phones and ipads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally. A personal visit carries with the additional feature of having to be in the person’s presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarily excuse our selves or turn the other persons off.

With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handcrafts(手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handcraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.

Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old.

It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.

1According to Paragraph 1, progress can benefit people when they are willing to _______.

    A. live a better life   B. look for better methods

    C. change ways of living   D. accept technology and advance steadily

2The underlined word “gadgets” is closest in meaning to _______.

    A. tools   B. messages

    C. barriers   D. skills

3The author explains “efficiency comes with a price” by _______.

    A. describing a process   B. using examples

    C. following time order   D. making classification

4What can be concluded from the last paragraph?

    A. Progress can suit the needs of daily life.

    B. People review the past with great regret.

    C. Technology should be introduced in a fixed way.

    D. People’s attitude decides the use of technology.

  • 27、Fashion designers are always looking for new materials to work with. Lately, it’s all about environment-friendly materials — recycled tires, mushrooms, even pineapple fibers! What if you want such a pair of shoes? Thaely is here to help.

This sneaker brand out of Dubai wants to fight the growing problem of plastic pollution. Led by 23-year-old Indian businessman Ashay Bhave, they may have found a winning approach: making shoes out of plastic grocery bags. “Thaely” means “plastic bag” in the Hindi language.

“I was looking to create footwear that is cost-effective and safe for the environment,” Bhave said in an interview with a newspaper. “I needed to come up with something that uses recycled plastic without creating any more plastic waste.” Plastic bags were the perfect solution. He said five trillion plastic bags are used around the world each year. “I was motivated to find a solution to this problem,” Bhave said.

That solution was the fiber called ThaelyTex. Made entirely from plastic bags, the material looks and feels like leather. That sounds promising. Better yet, the production process requires no additional chemicals and produces no poisonous by-products. The result is a smart-looking pair of white low-top sneakers.

Bhave wouldn’t expose the full process for making ThaelyTex, but he said that each pair of shoes was made from up to 15 plastic bags and 22 plastic bottles. Where do they get the materials? Bhave told Elle that was the hardest part. “The biggest challenge we faced was right at the first step of acquiring the plastic bags.”

Finally, they got help from TrioTap Technologies, a waste management plant. Bhave said they offered to collect the bags and also process them into ThaelyTex.

So far, it seems like things are falling into place. There are already hundreds of pre-orders in place. It sounds like they have some plans for the future. “We have a few more colors coming up,” said Bhave. They also plan to put out a high-top model and bring in a line of clothing. Let’s hope their growth is also friendly to the environment.

【1】Why did Bhave choose to make shoes out of plastic bags?

A.To set a new footwear trend.

B.To test new materials for footwear.

C.To reduce the use of plastic bags in his home country.

D.To use recycled plastic in an environment-friendly way.

【2】What was the most difficult task for Bhave?

A.Having a few more colors for Thaely.

    B.Processing plastic bags into ThaelyTex.

    C.Collecting enough production materials.

    D.Dealing with many poisonous by-products.

【3】The underlined part “put out” in the last paragraph probably means __________.

    A.produce

    B.stop

    C.cause

    D.broadcast

【4】What can be the best title for this passage?

    A.Bhave: a promising young man

B.Thaely: killer of waste plastic bags

C.ThaelyTex: material out of plastic bags

D.TrioTap Technologies: a waste management plant

  • 28、A joint research team recently have developed a new electronic skin that is similar to human skin in strength, durability (耐用性) and sensitivity. The skin or e-skin may play an important role in next- generation personalized medicine, soft robotics and artificial intelligence.

“The ideal e-skin will mimic (模仿) the many natural functions of human skin, such as sensing temperature and touch, accurately and in real time,” says leading researcher Yichen Cai. However, making suitably flexible electronics that can perform such delicate tasks while also used repeatedly is challenging, and each material involved must be carefully engineered.

Most e-skins are made by putting an active sensor on the surface that attaches to human skin. However, the connection between them is often too weak, which reduces the durability and sensitivity of the material; otherwise, if it is too strong, it won’t be flexible enough, making it more likely to break the circuit.

“The landscape of skin electronics keeps shifting at a remarkable pace,” says Cai. “The discovery of 2D sensors has accelerated efforts to turn these quite thin but strong materials into functional, durable artificial skins.”

The new man-made skin built by the researchers could sense objects from 20 centimeters away. It could further make a quick response when touched in less than one tenth of a second. “It is a striking achievement for an e-skin to maintain toughness after repeated use,” said Yichen, “which mimics the softness and rapid recovery of human skin.”

This type of e-skin could monitor a range of biological information, such as changes in blood pressure, which can be detected from movements of arms and legs. This data can then be shared and stored on the cloud via Wi-Fi.

“One remaining problem to the widespread use of e-skins lies in mass production of high-resolution sensors,” adds group leader Vincent Tung, “However, the latest technology offers new promise.”

【1】What promotes the development of a new e-skin?

    A.Investment in education.

    B.Research into human skin.

  • 29、In a partnership with the 5 Gyres Institute, Trash Free Maryland took to the Chesapeake Bay in November to study the presence of micropiastics in the water. Setting out from Deale, Md., the research team collected seven samples by dragging a trawl (拖网) for an hour at a time. The trawl was fitted with a cone-shaped (锥形的) net, whose holes measure 330 microns (微米) wide, about the width of two to three strands of human hair. Water flows through the main opening and the fine mesh (网眼) of net ensures anything suspended in the water is trapped behind.

In seven samples, the net picked up algae (海藻) trash, foam and plastic. According to the 5 Gyres Institute representative, the first sample collected contained almost 10 times the amount of plastic than would be collected in a typical ocean sample. The plastic found in the Chesapeake Bay samples included bits of bags, sheeting, fishing line and microbeads, which are small plastic scrubbers found in face wash, toothpaste and cleaning products. Microbeads in particular are a major source of microplastics pollution worldwide. They are small enough to bypass water treatment systems’ filters (过滤器) and end up in waterways. Scientists warn that chemicals and toxins (毒素) absorbed by microbeads and other microplastics could be passed on to organisms who mistake them for food and eat them, and could then be passed up higher and higher on the food chain, eventually reaching humans.

1What is the second paragraph mainly about?

    A. The description of the trawl.

    B. The basic data of the water samples.

    C. The process of collecting water samples.

    D. The introduction of Trash Free Maryland.

2What does the underlined word “They” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A. Bits of bags.   B. Chemicals.

    C. Microbeads.   D. Micropiastics.

3How does the author prove plastics pollution can be harmful to people’s health?

    A. By analyzing the data.   B. By making comparisons.

    C. By giving some examples.   D. By referring to scientists views.

4What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

    A. To explain some new scientific terms to people.

    B. To let people learn more about plastics pollution.

    C. To urge governments to make environmental laws.

    D. To tell people some new findings in scientific research.

  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At 76 years old, Melanie felt tired all the time. It had nothing to do with her age, though. 14 years ago, her son, Anthony, died in a plane crash. After a long-time search, the rescuers said there were no survivors and no hope for the victims’ families.

Luckily, Melanie had Anthony’s son, Mark, and his wife, Kayla, to get her by. But it wasn’t the same. She missed Anthony and often felt hopeless about life. Her son died at a young age. He left a baby, and Kayla had not recovered from his death either.

One day at home, when watching the news on TV, Melanie and Kayla were suddenly surprised by what they were seeing. A news reporter was talking beside a man who looked like Anthony. He seemed older than he had ever been. The news caused great excitement. “It must be him!” Melanie and Kayla both said happily.

“If you recognize this man, please call the number on the screen. Recently, a vague (模糊的)memory of having a plane crash hit this man’s mind. But he still doesn’t remember anything before the crash 14 years ago near the Canary Islands. Authorities now have reason to believe that there was a mistake in the previous report that the crash left no survivors…”

When the news ended, Kayla called the number immediately. She told the attendant that she believed the man was her husband Anthony and provided details. Kayla also asked for more information about what had happened over the past 14 years since the accident. The attendant said, “14 years ago, some local fishermen found him who lost his memory. They offered him a job, and he has worked and lived with one of them since then.”

This attendant then told Anthony that his family were waiting for him to go home. Weeks later, Anthony went to the city where Melanie and Kayla lived. All the family members were waiting at the airport. Finally, the gates opened, and people were coming out.
