26、Schools across Britain are being asked to take part in a research project known as Teensleep to stagger (错开) their start times to suit the different biological clocks of children, with 10-year-olds starting at 9 am and 15-year-olds starting at 10 am. Scientists believe that the body’s circadian rhythm (生理节律), which determines sleep-wake patterns over 24-hour periods, varies with a child’s age and that an earlier school start time for all students is not in the best interests of older children. “The research project will sign up 100 schools as part of the biggest study yet into the role that school start times play in the health of students,” said Paul Kelley of the University of Oxford.
“The natural change in the biological clock to later in the 24-hour cycle is particularly obvious in the 14 to 24 age group. The change in the biological clock continues in later middle age, when people usually go back to the naturally earlier start time they felt comfortable with when they were 10-year-old children,” Dr Kelley said.
“By the time you are 18, 19 or 20 you are suffering on average two hours of sleep loss a day and that is increasing so that at the end of the week you have suffered 10 hours of sleep loss. It has a hugely damaging impact on the body,” Dr Kelley told the Seience Festival in Bradford.
“Students lose more sleep than doctors working a 24-hour shift during every school or university week... Schools are starting at any time they choose. There is no justification and no study suggesting that starting earlier is better,” he said. “Most people wake up to alarms because they don’t naturally wake up at the time they go to work, so we are a sleep-deprived (睡眠不足) society and this age group, 14 to 24, is more deprived than any other group of society,” he added.
【1】What’s the aim of the research project?
A.To determine the sleep hours of children.
B.To suit the different biological clocks of children.
C.To change the start times of the schools across Britain.
D.To study the influence of school times on students’ health.
【2】Which of the following statements might Dr. Kelley agree with?
A.24-year-olds start school the latest.
B.The older students are, the later they start school.
C.The change in the biological clock doesn’t happen in later middle age.
D.An earlier start time suits both the later middle age group and 10-year-olds.
【3】What has a great bad influence on the body?
A.Work on weekends.
B.The pressure of study.
C.More and more sleep loss.
D.The earlier school start time.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Schools always start earlier.
B.Students are most sleep-deprived.
C.Students are more stressed than doctors.
D.Sleep deprivation has become a worldwide problem.
27、This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. As I searched the name, I found that there were two famous people having the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts(花生), while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; let the coin decide. I flipped(掷) a coin and Ah! Tails (背面)! My report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, I stood in front of the classroom and proudly read my homework. But things started to get strange. I looked around the room, only to find my classmates with big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes and my stone-faced teacher. I was completely lost. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”
Oh well, I dropped the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American War of Independence.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that my teacher meant that George Washington?
Of course, my subject result was awful. Sad but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to the headmaster Miss Lancelot, but she said firmly: No re-dos; no new score. I felt that it was not fair, and I believed I deserved a second chance. So I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, I sat in the headmaster’s office again, but this time a completely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the terrible moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster told me I was good enough to skip(跳过) the 6th grade and started the 7th grade next term.

28、As you probably know, learning a foreign language is sometimes challenging. But it can also be fun. We spend hundreds of hours at school trying to get our tongues round different vocabulary and grammar in order to earn a qualification. But learning to speak a second language is more than just passing an exam-it opens doors to new opportunities, helps you to communicate with others and makes travelling overseas more satisfactory.
It might come as a surprise that the number of teenagers learning foreign languages in UK secondary schools has dropped by 45% since the turn of the millennium. German and French have fallen the most-these languages from two of the UK’s closest trading partners have declined at GCSE level. Another survey of secondary schools suggests a third of students have dropped at least one language from their GCSE exam options. There are some reasons for this, including many students’ opinion that languages are difficult. Others have questioned the need for a second language when translation technology is advancing.
Matthew Fell, chief UK policy director for business group the CBI, believes that “The decline in language learning in schools must be reversed, or else the UK will be less competitive globally and young people less prepared for the modern world.” But even for those who are eager to study another language, the opportunity is being reduced. In Scotland, for example, foreign language subjects are being pressed out of many secondary school timetables with some head teachers blaming pressure on the curriculum.
However, some native English speakers have admitted the benefits of speaking another tongue. Cassandra Scott, from Edinburgh, studied three languages in her final year at school. She is now a freelance translator in Edinburgh, and says “Learning languages at school really set the course for my career.”

【4】What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To criticize people’s ignorance of foreign languages.
B.To stress the significance of learning foreign languages.
C.To state the result of dropping learning foreign languages.
D.To raise people’s awareness of protecting native languages.
29、One of the problems damaging our planet is the number of things we throw away. Rubbish of all kinds is piling up in landfills and polluting our rivers and oceans. A more recent addition to the list of things we chuck away is e-waste--electronic items that are broken and not recycled. Now solutions are being found to give this stuff a new life.
Many millions of tons of televisions, phones, and other electronic equipment are discarded each year, partly because it's cheaper to replace them than fix them, but also because we lack the skills to repair them. A UN report claims the 50 million tons of e-waste generated every year will more than double to 110 million tons by 2050, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the world.
However, there's a growing trend for repair events and clubs which could be part of a solution to the growing amount of electrical and electronic junk. The BBC visited a Restart Project in London, which is one of many found around the world. One o£ its volunteers, Francesco Calo, said, “This project allows you to reduce waste, extend the life of objects, and it helps people who cannot afford to get rid of items that have developed a fault. ”
As many electrical items contain valuable metals, another idea is e-waste mining. An experiment at the University of New South Wales involves extracting these materials from electronic gadgets. It's thought that doing this could be more profitable than traditional mining. With phones typically containing as many as 60 elements, this could be part of the solution to our appetite for new technology.
At present, in countries where there is no legislation, much of it just gets dumped. However, the European Union, for example, is trying to tackle the problem by insisting manufacturers make appliances longer-lasting and supply spare parts for machines for up 10 years.
【1】What is the passage mainly about?
A.The Restart Project founded to get rid of e-waste.

【2】Which word can replace the underlined word “discarded” in paragraph 2?

D.It intends to make great profits by e-waste mining.
【4】From which is the text probably taken?
