24、 The mobile phone has become a problem for middle schools. Some middle schools in Australia have banned (禁止) students from carrying mobile phones during school hours.
Mobile phone use among children has become a problem for schools. Several children have got mobile phones from parents and friends as Christmas gifts, and more students will want them.
Lucy Bluett, an expert, said mobile phone use was a distraction (使人分心的事) to students during school hours. Teachers were also saying that sometimes students might use phone messages to cheat during exams.
She said some schools had tried to ban mobile phones. Some parents felt unhappy because they couldn't call up their children.
Many teachers said students should not have mobile phones at school, but if there was a good reason, they could leave their phones at the school office.

25、 For the most part of my life, I have lived in a small town in northern Arizona. As I got older, it seemed as if my town got smaller.
All things I could see in the town were bad. It looked ugly, small and was filled with terrible people. I wanted to be in new places with bigger chances and to meet new people. That was exactly what I did. I moved to the city of Phoenix to go to college and worked hard to achieve what I had dreamed of.
For the first year when I was away from home, I wanted to stay away and never go back. When people were taking a trip to my hometown, I would always question “Why would you like to do that? It’s so ugly.” All I had towards my hometown was negative feelings.
However, after being away for about three years, my perspective has completely changed. I have nothing but love for my hometown — its beauty, and the sentimental value (感情价值) that it holds.
After all, it’s where I’m from. Yes, there are bad things, but there are also some good ones: Dad raced the train on the way to school; Mum let us stop for ice cream every Friday after school to celebrate the end of the week; I walked around downtown with friends in high school, thinking we were cool.
It might take being away from something for you to truly appreciate it. It’s true when people say that distance makes the heart grow fonder(温柔的). Now I visit my hometown every chance I get. Even if I am no longer living there, it will always hold a piece of my heart.

26、 They hang from trees. They float in rivers and oceans. They are piled up in landfills(垃圾填埋场). Our frequent use of plastic products has, for many years, been a leading cause of serious environmental problems in the world. Last month, China drew up new guidelines(指导方针) aiming to bring plastic pollution under control across the country in five years’ time.
According to the new guidelines, the ban(禁令) on the use of non-biodegradable(不可生物降解的) plastic bags will have been applied to cities including Beijing and Shanghai by the end of this year. Other sources of plastic garbage will have been banned in these cities by the end of 2022. And that rule will have extended nationwide by late 2025.
Fortunately, China will not start from zero. Late last year, the country announced a national standard for biodegradable plastic shopping bags. It is technologically prepared for their production. Some regions have gained valuable experience that others can learn from. For example, Jilin province is leading the way by providing eco-friendly(环保的) shopping bags in some local supermarkets.
Given the size of China’s consumer market, one main obstacle(障碍) is the large number of plastic items that are being used by restaurants and e-commerce(电子商务) platforms. It’s estimated that nearly 25 billion plastic bags were used for deliveries in 2018. Most of them were rarely reused.
However, most Chinese people welcomed the government’s effort to reduce the use of plastics. “Beijing is thinking about the problem seriously,” said Tang Damin, a member of Greenpeace East Asia in Beijing. He added that the policy could be far more effective(有效) by using incentives(激励) such as a deposit(押金) return program on plastic products.

C.plastic bags won’t be allowed to be used in Beijing by the end of 2022
D.a deposit return program on plastic products will be put into practicing in 2023
【3】What is the biggest challenge to follow the guidelines?
A.Most Chinese people aren’t used to using paper bags.
B.It’s hard to make effective policy to solve the problem.
C.Many supermarkets are still providing customers with plastic bags.
D.Restaurants and e-commerce platforms need large number of plastic items.
【4】What does Tang Damin think of the new policy?
A.The new guidelines are not much useful.
B.People should be encouraged to follow the policy.

27、Everybody hates rats. But rats may soon be man’s new good friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue(援救)dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal(信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark, they are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but a scientist says, “It would be great. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
