  • 27、   Next time you make yourself a hot cup of tea or coffee, you might want to cool it down a bit before drinking.

Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer. Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65°C, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus(食道). The researchers examined findings from other studies where tea and coffee were often served at 70 or above. Those studies were completed in Iran, China and South America.

In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks. However, this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages(饮料)at very high temperatures.

In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature greatly. However, tea-drinkers in Iran often enjoy their beverages at temperatures close to 70.

The researchers found that South Americans not only drink their very hot beverages, they also drink them through a metal straw. This sends the scalding liquid directly into the throat.

The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers. In 1991, the World Health Organization (WHO) listed coffee as possibly carcinogenic(致癌的). The WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink.

The results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drink itself, that appears to be responsible.

1What might be the cause of esophageal cancer in developed countries?

    A.Smoking. B.Alcoholic drinks.

    C.Unhealthy vegetables. D.Hot drinks.

2Where do tea-drinkers liking adding milk come from?

    A.China. B.Iran.

    C.The United States. D.South Africa.

3What does the underlined word “scalding” in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Sweet. B.Cold.

    C.Hot. D.Tasteless.

4What can be learned from the passage?

A.Once the WHO thought coffee would cause cancer.

B.Drinks below 60 can cause esophageal cancer.

C.The temperature of the drink should not be the cause of cancer.

D.Drinking milk is a much healthier way to keep away from cancer.

  • 28、A new study recently found that elephants in central African forests can encourage the growth of slow-growing trees and increase the ability of the forest to store carbon.

“As a tree, there’s a trade-off you can’t have it all,” explained Fabio Berzaghi, who led the study. “You either invest in growing fast, or in building a lot of structure with carbon to be more resistant.” Elephants prefer to eat fast-growing trees in more open spaces. As they feed and walk, they cause damage to these species, knocking over trees or breaking off branches, which results in an ecosystem that favors large, slow-growing hardwood trees. “As the elephants thin the forest, they increase the number of slow-growing trees and the forest is capable of storing more carbon, ” said Stephen Blake, one of the paper’s authors.

Scientists collected field measurements in the Congo Basin and used a computer model to predict how elephants would affect forest structure, and carbon storage potential in the long term. The data confirmed that when elephants are present, the forest contains larger trees and higher abundances of species with high wood density. Conversely (相反地),should forest elephants go extinct, leaving those slow-growing trees struggling to compete with fast-growing species, it would result in a 7 percent loss of above-ground biomass (生物总量). As a result, central African forests could lose up to three billion tons of carbon, potentially accelerating climate change.

The sad reality is that humans are doing their best to rid the planet of elephants. “This study comes at a time when forest elephants are threatened as never before,” said Iain Douglas Hamilton, founder of Save the Elephants. “It is shocking that just as we are beginning to understand how elephants might have a key role in Africa in storing carbon, they are under real threat of extinction.” One limitation of the study, Mr. Berzaghi said, is that we do not know how much carbon has already been lost because of the elephants’ decline. But it does seem certain, he added, that putting a stop to illegal hunting and restoring forest elephant populations would bring climate benefits.

【1】What can we infer about slow-growing trees in Paragraph 2?

    A.They are elephants’ favorite food.

B.They are easily hurt by elephants.

C.They can help forests store carbon.

    D.They may reduce elephant populations.

【2】What would happen without elephants living in central African forests?

A.Climate change would possibly be sped up.

B.The forest structure would remain unchanged.

C.The forests would lose more fast-growing trees.

D.Larger trees would defeat fast-growing species.

【3】What did Mr. Berzaghi suggest people do?

    A.Lead a low-carbon life.

    B.Evaluate the carbon loss.

    C.Stop destroying forests.

    D.Protect forest elephants.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Humans and Nature Live in Harmony

B.Elephants Disappear in Parts of Africa

    C.Climate Change Affects Forest Structure

    D.Elephants Defend Against Climate Change

  • 29、   “I have slept on the Embankment (河堤),” wrote George Orwell in 1933, adding that, despite the noise and the wet and the cold, it was “much better than not sleeping at all.” Under the nearby Charing Cross bridge, Orwell reported that “50 men were waiting, mirrored in the shivering puddles.” Nine decades on and Charing Cross and the Embankment are once again full of rough sleepers, even during the coldest days of December. Across London their numbers have more than tripled since 2010.

It is a pattern found in much of the rich world. Almost every European country is seeing a rise in the number of homeless people. Homelessness across America is in decline, but it is soaring in its most prosperous cities. And roughly 5,000 people live on the streets of San Francisco, a 19% rise in just two years.

However, some rich, successful cities, including Tokyo and Munich, have few people living on the streets. These places offer lessons on how to reduce homelessness. One is that tough love can sometimes work. Conservatives argue that softer policing methods in the 1970s, including not being strict to public drunkenness, were in part responsible for the rise in homelessness. The world could learn something from Greece, where strong family networks ensure that those down on their luck find someone to take them in. Many experts argue that it is counterproductive to give money to someone begging on the street.

Yet stricter methods will ultimately do little if housing costs remain high, which is the underlying reason for rising homelessness. Few Americans lived on the streets in the early post-war period because housing was cheaper. Back then only one in four tenants spent more than 30% of their income on rent, compared with one in two today. The best evidence suggests that a 10% rise in housing costs in a pricy city causes an 8% jump in homelessness.

The state can do something to help. Cuts to rent subsidies for Britain’s poor are probably the biggest reason why Charing Cross has so many people sleeping on the streets once again. Making such subsidies more generous might actually save governments money in the medium term — after all, demands on health-care services and the police would decline. People would also be more likely to land a job.

Another option is for the state to build more housing itself. In Singapore, 80% of residents live in government-built flats which they buy at knock-down prices. While many countries have been privatizing their stock of public housing, Finland has been building more of it, giving the government the necessities to put homeless people in their own apartments rather than warehousing them in shelters. In Finland the homeless numbers are moving in the right direction.

The most effective reform, however, would be to make building more homes easier. In many countries NIMBYist (邻避主义者) planning rules vastly inflate the market price of shelter. Such rules should be abolished. Japan loosened planning rules, prompting residential construction to jump. Since then, the number of rough sleepers has fallen by 80% in 20 years in Tokyo. Until cities elsewhere let the buildings go up, more people will find themselves down and out.

1The writer quotes the words of George Orwell in Paragraph 1 to __________.

A.describe the poor situation of the homeless in 1933.

B.emphasize the large number of the rough sleepers.

C.unveil the difficulty of solving the problem of the homeless.

D.introduce the current problem of homelessness in the rich world.

2Which of the following is the main reason for rising number of the homeless?

A.prosperity of the rich world. B.generosity towards the homeless.

C.outrageous housing cost. D.privatization of the public housing.

3Which of the following is Not True, according to this passage?

A.In Finland and Singapore, the number of the homeless was reduced by building more public housing and apartments.

B.Greece prioritized offering tough love over giving money directly to the beggars to comfort them.

C.NIMBYist supported the government to abolish the inappropriate housing rules and make building more houses easier.

D.British government’s cutting the rent subsidies for the poor contributes to the increasing number of the rough sleepers.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Reasons for the rising homeless in the rich world.

B.Ways to cut homelessness in the world’s priciest cities.

C.Different reaction of different countries towards the homeless.

D.Comparison of the housing cost in impoverished and rich countries.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

A huge milestone has just been reached in the field of artificial intelligence: AlphaGo, a program developed by Google’s DeepMind unit, has defeated legendary Go player Lee Se-dol in the first of five historic matches being held in Seoul, South Korea. Lee 1 after about three and a half hours, with 28 minutes and 28 seconds remaining on his clock. The series is the first time a professional 9-dan Go player has taken on a computer, and Lee is 2 for a $1 million prize.

“I was very surprised,”said Lee after the match.“I didn’t expect to lose. But I didn’t think AlphaGo would play the game in such a perfect manner.”DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis expressed“huge 3 for Lee Se-dol and his amazing skills.”calling the game“hugely exciting”and“very tense.”Team lead David Silver said it was an“amazing game of Go that really pushed AlphaGo to its 4.”

Go is an ancient Chinese board game that has long been considered one of the great 5faced by AI. While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. I think I failed on the opening layout so if I do a better job on the opening aspect I think I will be able to increase my 9 of winning.”Lee was surprised both by how strong AlphaGo’s opening was, and by some 10moves.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.

    Dear Li Hua,

How are you doing these days? I’m having some problems and would like to get your advice.

My parents want me to spend my summer with them this year but I would prefer to go somewhere with my friends. I love my parents but sometimes they are overprotective. I feel that I am old enough and responsible enough to go away without their supervision(监护).

Any suggestions you could give me about this issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • 39、Direction: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main file of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

The Queen’s speech was once a highlight of Christmas Day. However, according to a mathematical analysis of the festive messages, the speech is now one of the most repetitive and predictable television events. Of the 42,000 words the Queen has used, only 3,991 are distinct words which have never been repeated.

“Since she came to the throne (王位) in 1952, the Queen has given 63 Christmas broadcasts, only failing to appear once in 1969 when she issued a written message,” said Hannah Fry, a mathematician at University College London. “She could have said a lot in that time, but if you analyze the text, she has actually said very little and often repeated herself.”

Fry and his UCL colleague Thomas Léron Evans analyzed the speeches in the hope of “finding out what Christmas really means to Her Majesty (女王殿下).” Ignoring common words such as “the” and “of, ” they focused instead on nouns and phrases, looking at how often they were repeated. Almost predictably, they discovered that the Queen’s Christmas vocabulary was dominated by words such as “Commonwealth (英联邦),” “peoples,” “families” and “children,” and phrased such as “shining example,” “weak and innocent” and “tragic situation.”

“There are words about time, about society and some religious words… all very good and noble, of course, but also a bit dull and repetitive,” said Fry.

One clear tread the two mathematicians found in the Christmas messages was an increase in references to religion over the recent years. Jesus was hardly mentioned in the 1950s. From then to 1973, there was almost no reference to Christianity or religion. However, in recent years, religion has appeared frequently, peaking at 20 mentions 2000, with another dozen in 2011 and between five and ten mentions in most other recent years.

Fry and Evans have also designed a computer program that can take the Queen’s favorite words and phrases, and turn them back into a ready-made (现成的) speech.
