二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、What an athlete eats before, during and after exercise is important for comfort and performance during exercise. While eating soon before exercise doesn’t provide what is needed for the activity, it can prevent hunger during exercise. What is needed for muscles is stored in the days before exercise. This is one reason that the post-exercise meal is very important to recovery and being ready for the next exercise.

Exercising on a full stomach is not a good idea. Food that remains in your stomach during an event may cause stomach upset. To make sure you have enough energy, yet reduce stomach discomfort, you should allow a meal to fully digest before the start of the event.

If you have an early morning race or exercise, it’s best to get up early enough to eat your pre-exercise meal. If not, you should try to eat or drink something easily digestible about 20-30 minutes before the event. The closer you are to the time of your event, the less you should eat. You can have a liquid (液体) meal closer to your event than a solid (固体) meal because your stomach digests liquids faster.

Because glucose (葡萄糖) is the energy source for most exercise, a pre-exercise meal should include foods that are high in carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and easy to digest. This includes foods such as fruit, bread, energy bars and drinks.

Planning is necessary if you are competing in an all-day event, such as track meets or other tournaments. You should plan ahead and prepare meals and snacks that you have tried before. Do not experiment with something new on the event day.

【1】To prepare for the next exercise, you should ________.

    A.eat soon before exercise

    B.eat during exercise

    C.eat after exercise

    D.eat nothing at all

【2】Fully digesting a meal before an event may ________.

    A.cause stomach upset

B.give enough energy and stomach discomfort

C.give comfort and good performance during exercise

    D.lead to hunger during exercise

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.You’d better have your pre-exercise meal after an early morning race.

B.Fruit and bread are high in glucose and easy to digest.

C.Planning is not necessary for track meets.

D.You can try something new for your meals on the event day.

【4】What is the passage mainly talking about?

A.Tips mainly for eating before exercise.

    B.What to eat during exercise.

C.Fully digesting a meal before exercise.

    D.Planning for your exercise.

  • 27、   There are hundreds of types of birthday cake in the world. You are likely to enjoy one during at least one of your birthday parties. But have you ever stopped and wondered, “Why am I eating this? What makes this dessert fit to celebrate the day of my birth?”

It’s because you are as important and beloved as the gods.

The ancient Egyptians are thought to have “invented” the celebration of birthdays. They believed when pharaohs (法老) were crowned, they became gods, so their coronation (加冕) day was their “birth” as a god.

Ancient Greeks borrowed the tradition, but realized that a dessert would make the celebration more meaningful. So they baked moon-shaped cakes to offer up to the goddess of the moon. They decorated them with lighted candles to make the cakes shine like the moon. It is the reason why we light our birthday cakes on fire.

Modern birthday parties are said to get their roots from an 18th century German celebration. On the morning of a child’s birthday, he or she would receive a cake with lighted candles that added up to the kid’s age, plus one. This extra candle was called the “light of life,” representing the hope of another full year lived.

And then, torture — because no one could eat the cake until after dinner. The family replaced the candles as they burned out throughout the day. Finally, when the moment came, the birthday child would make a wish, try to blow out all the candles in one breath, and dig in.

Since the ingredients (原料) to make cakes were pretty expensive, this birthday custom didn’t become popular until the Industrial Revolution. More ingredients were available, which made them cheaper, and bakeries even started selling pre-baked cakes.

1What is the passage mainly about?

A.The origin of birthday cakes. B.The significance of birthday cakes.

C.The history of birthday parties. D.The introduction of cake production.

2Who established the tradition of celebrating birthdays with cakes according to the passage?

    A.Germans. B.Pharaohs.

    C.Ancient Greeks. D.Ancient Egyptians.

3The underlined word “torture” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to ________.

    A.pleasure B.replacement

    C.sharing D.suffering

4Why was the birthday cake custom unpopular before the Industrial Revolution?

    A.The transport was inconvenient.

B.The ingredients of cakes were expensive.

C.The cake could not be eaten before dinner.

D.The bakeries would not sell pre-baked cakes.

  • 29、   During the high school career, students may begin to question the importance of a college education. They might find themselves asking, “Why is it important to go to college?” The answer is that, more than ever, college graduates enjoy much greater opportunities available to them than those who have not received a college education.

For many high school students, being able to immediately generate an income after graduation is an appealing thought. They may also be affected by the rising cost of tuition, and while it is true that a higher education may be one of the largest expenses you will ever face, the importance of a college education has become quite evident in terms of earning potential within today’s economy.

Why should you go to college? One important answer to this question is more opportunity. As opposed to generations of the past, high school graduates today are unable to obtain high-paying jobs that were once available. The U.S. has been transformed from a manufacturing-based economy to an economy based on knowledge, and the importance of a college education today can be compared to that of a high school education forty years ago. It serves as the gateway to better options and more opportunity.

There are additional reasons as to why it is important to go to college. When students experience a post secondary education, they have the opportunity to read books and listen to the lectures of top experts in their fields. This encourages students to think, ask questions, and explore new ideas, which allows for additional growth and development and provides college graduates with more opportunities in the job market over those who have not experienced a higher education.

The importance of a college education is also stressed because of the opportunity to gain valuable resources during the study. The more connections which are collected during your college career, the more options you will have when you begin your job search. Once you have ended your job search and have started your career, however, the importance of a college education has not been exhausted. Having a college degree often provides for greater promotion opportunity.

So, why should you go to college? The reasoning does not begin and end with the job aspect. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints, and though the importance of a college education is quite evident for many high school students, what is often not as clear is how they will pay for that education.

1Why do some high school graduates prefer working to college study?

A.To obtain high-paying jobs. B.To earn money at an early age.

C.To spend less money on tuition. D.To adapt to the knowledge-based society.

2The author most likely agrees with the idea that ____.

A.too much time is spent on lectures in college study

B.high school education is a gateway to more opportunity

C.college graduates gain more chances over others in job market

D.a college degree guarantees promotion in American companies

3What is most likely to be talked about in the paragraph after the last paragraph of the passage?

A.Refusing college education. B.Changing college education.

C.Receiving college education. D.Affording college education.

A.Importance of college education. B.Education means opportunity.

C.Which is more important, job or education? D.How to survive in the college.
