  • 26、There was once a man who built his own house. From top to bottom (底部), he designed and built every inch of his home. It took him over a year, but in the end, he had a very beautiful house of his own. No other house in his neighborhood looked like it, so many of his neighbors admired it.

But as time went by, his house started to have some problems. One day, a neighbor said, “Friend, it looks like the grass in your front yard is a bit overgrown.”

The man replied, “Yes, I know. But it’s okay. I’ll cut the grass tomorrow.”

A few days later, a mailman came by with a letter for the man. The mailman said, “Friend, it looks like the windows of your house are a bit dirty.”

The man replied, “Yes, I know. But it’s okay. I’ll wash them tomorrow.”

Months passed by, there were more people pointing out the problems of the house for the man. But he always replied, “Yes, I know. But it’s okay. I’ll do that tomorrow.”

Finally, the man’s brother came over to pay a visit. He looked at his brother’s house and couldn’t believe what he saw. The yard was a mess, the paint on the walls was falling down, the windows were covered with dirt and some of the doors were broken—all because the man didn’t do anything until “tomorrow”.

When we procrastinate, “tomorrow” can turn into “next week” or even “next year”. It’s much better to just take care of things today than to wait until some imaginary (想象的) “tomorrow” that might not actually come. So rather than waiting to do something “tomorrow”, why not do it today?

【1】Many neighbors admired the man’s house because ________.

A.the things in the house were pretty expensive

B.the paint on the wall was beautiful and colorful

C.the grass in the man’s front yard grew very well

    c. A neighbor saw the grass was overgrown.

    d. A mailman found the windows were dirty.

    A.a-b-c-d

    B.a-c-b-d

    C.a-c-d-b

    D.a-d-c-b

【3】The underline word “procrastinate” in the last paragraph means ________.

    A.put off

    B.lay out

    C.talk back

    D.look after

  • 27、If you’re traveling to the United States, you need to understand the common way to say hello-a handshake. Friends shake hands. Women, men and even children can shake hands.

Shaking hands also seems simple, but there are some important things to remember. When you shake hands, you must look into the other person’s eyes the whole time you’re shaking hands.

Shake hands strongly. If you give a weak handshake, the other person might think that you’re not kind. He / She might also feel that you don’t like him / her or you don’t want to touch him / her. Shake hands with men and women the same way. If you shake hands with a very old person or a small child, be careful not to hurt them.

Some people don’t know how long to keep shaking. The most common handshake should have three shakes and then you should let go. Don’t worry if Americans shake hands a little longer.

Your handshake is like your smile. It’s special to you. You need to find a comfortable strong handshake that shows what you are like. Because the handshake allows people to touch, the hand should be warm, clean and dry.

Warm: Put your hands into your pockets before you shake hands. This will warm them.

Clean: If you know you’re going to meet someone, wash your hands so they’ll be clean.

Dry: Everyone gets nervous and your hands may get wet. It isn’t a good feeling for the other person. Again, put your hands into your pockets. This will dry them.

【1】When you stay in the USA, the common way to greet is to ________.

    A.bow

    B.kiss

    C.shake hands

    D.hug

【2】If you give a weak handshake in America, the other person might think that you’re ________.

    A.unfriendly

    B.brave

    C.friendly

    D.outgoing

【3】The most common handshake should have ________ shakes, and then you should let go.

    A.five

    B.four

    C.three

    D.six
