Kids around the world face the problem of smoking every day. Here are some stories of Chinese kids who made the right choice. Maybe we can learn something from them.
A 14-year-old boy named Wang Lin, in Taiyuan, Shanxi said, "I tried a cigarette once with a few friends. We all did it together only because we wanted to know what will smoking be like. We didn't want it to become a habit, we just wanted to see why everyone wanted to do it so much. I'm happy I tried it, because it killed my curiosity(好奇心) right away. I coughed a lot, my throat(喉咙) burned, and I felt dizzy (眩晕). I hated every part of it, and I knew it was something I should never do again."
"I never thought about smoking before. None of my friends smoke. And I thought no one in my family smoked, either." said Li Yang, a 11-year-old boy from Shenzhen. "But I smoked once, it was just a lesson from my father. One day, he opened a pack of cigarettes and gave me one. He asked if I had ever thought about smoking. I told him yes. He asked me why. I said something about how smoking is cool. He lit(点燃) the cigarette and told me to smoke it. I tried and began to cough right away. He put his hand on my back and told me if I ever smoked again. I would smell bad, my teeth would be ugly and I would cough. And if I was with my friends, they would think I was stupid. I never forgot that day, and I never wanted to smoke again."
Zhao Bing who is two years older than Li Yang and lived in Shijiazhuang said, "I hate smoking! Because my father died of smoking. He smoked too much that he got the lung cancer. He was against the movement of the white settlers into the Black Hills. In 1868, he refused to sign a treaty (条约) , which stated that the Black Hills didn’t belong to people. 29、 As you grow older, you’ll be faced with some challenging decisions—like ________ to cut class or try cigarettes. Making decisions on your own is hard, but when other people get involved and try to pressure you one way or another, it can be even ________. People who are your age, ________ your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act, to get you to do something, it’s called peer pressure.
Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way ________ the planets in the solar system. Maybe you got ________ excited about your new favorite book, and now everyone’s reading it. These are examples of how peers positively influence each other.
Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them; your soccer friend might try to convince you to be mean to another player and never pass him the ball.
It is hard to be the only one who says “no” to peer pressure, but you can do it. ________ your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and wrong can help you know the right thing to do.
