六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In 1901, H. G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers (探险者) landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the "moon people" they met. In turn, the "moon people" expressed their surprise. "Why are you travelling to outer space when you don't even use your inner space?" they asked.

    H. G. Wells could only imagine the travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the "moon people" asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.

Underground systems (体系) are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The "Chunnel", a tunnel connecting England and France, is now completed.

But what about underground cities? Japan's Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems, called "Alice Cities". The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping and so on. A solar dome (太阳能穹顶) would cover the whole city.

Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a

good way to use the earth's space. The surface, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H. G. Wells's "moon people" would agree. Would you?

1The explorers in H. G. Wells's story were surprised to find that the "moon people"

  • 22、   All big cities are quite similar. Living in a modern Asian city is not very different from living in an American city. But it is different from living on farms however.

In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, however, each family lives on its own fields and often can't see any neighbor. Instead of traveling from a village to the fields every morning. American farmers stay on their land all the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on horses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas there are some small schools serving a few families and the children walk to school.

Of course, life keeps changing for everyone including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios and TV sets. And of course, there are modern machines for faming now. All these have greatly changed farmers’ life.

Before, farming in America was often a lonely way of living for a long time. Farmers had to deal with their own problems, instead of getting help from others. They learned to try new ways, and thought of their own ideas instead of following old ways.

1Where do the farmers live in the United States?

    A.Villages B.Towns C.Buildings D.Fields

2Why do the farmers in America travel to the nearest town on Saturdays?

A.Because they want to meet friends B.Because they want to buy something

C.Because they want to go church D.Because they want to sell fruit

3What are the lives of the farmers in America like today?

A.They have a modern life B.They don’t change their lives

C.They have a lonely way of living D.They have many problems about their lives

4Which sentence is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The life in the cities should be the same.

B.There is no difference between cities.

C.The life on the farm is different in different countries.

D.The life on farms doesn’t change all the time.

  • 23、   When we see babies or pets, we can’t help touching them gently to show our love. And they give happy feelings back to us. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.

A study in The Plants Journal shows that plants don’t like to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes (基因), and even worse, it can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan in Australia gave an explanation. The lightest touch from a human, an animal, or even plants touching each other in the wild, causes a big gene change in the plant.

In order to test the idea, the scientists did an experiment ( 实验) on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a brush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as a result of the touch, the mitochondria ( 线粒体) in the plants were partly broken. The mitochondria are the “power-house” of the cells (细胞). The mitochondria produce energy for the cells in both animals and plants. If this “power-house” is broken, the plants will lose lots of energy. The energy is very important for their growth. Whelan further explained, “If the touching is repeated, then the plant growth is slowed by 30 percent.”

Although the touching does have a strong influence (影响) on plants, usually the plants can still be alive. _________________________ Continually touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones. However, in some ways, this change could be helpful. It may help plants to fight against  threats from animals or bad weather.

The findings of the research ( 研究) help us to have a better understanding of the plants. And the research might help with the growth of plants.

1The writer wrote this article in order to   .

A.stop people from touching plants B.tell people to protect plants

C.introduce (介绍) a scientist to us D.explain a new finding about plants

2What does the underlined word “threats”mean according to the passage?

    A.威胁 B.保护 C.援助 D.改变

3Which of the following statements may be the missing part in Paragraph 4 ?

A.Touching changes the plants, it makes them grow more slowly until they die.

B.Touching changes the plants, but it’s not always a bad change.

C.We should protect the plants from being touched by humans or animals.

D.Scientists don’t care that touching may have a strong influence on plants at all.

4Which of the following is wrong according to the passage?

A.Babies and pets liked to be touched.

B.The scientist did the experiment to test if touching can change the genes of plants.

C.The experiment lasted for four weeks.

D.Touching plants is not always bad for their growth.

  • 24、Dear mum and dad,

I'm writing this letter to you from the centre of Australia. At the moment we're staying near Uluruthat's the aboriginal (土著的) name for Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a balloon tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3.6 kilometres long and 384 metres high. The colours of the rock are fantastic, and at different times of the day, they change   from purple to red. The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancient aboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Uluru is a centre of aboriginal culture.

The Australians have many British relatives. That's why they're like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. They love all sports, but football is the most popular. Most Australians live near the coast, so they also love going to the beach, swimming and surfing.

Although it's December, it's summer over here. The sunshine is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback (澳大利亚的内地) is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand.

The next day after we arrived at Uluru, we went on a camel(骆驼) ride. The camel that I rode had a bad temper. When I sat on its back, it became very angry and refused me. So everyone else thought it was very funny that my camel kept lying down...

Finally, later this evening, we're taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home. It's been a fantastic trip!

    Tony

1Which is NOT true according to Paragraph 1?

A.Uluru is the name for Ayers Rock. B.The height of Uluru is 384 metres.   C.The rock of Uluru doesn't change colours.

    2Tony may be a( n) ________.

    A.British B.Australian C.American

3________ is the most popular sport in Australia.

    A. B. C.

4The underlined word "temper "means "________" in  Chinese.

    A.脾气 B.记忆 C.命令

5What is the best title of this passage?

A.A Balloon Tour B.An Aboriginal Letter C.A Fantastic Trip
