21、My, what a big beak you have!
For humans, adapting to climate change will mostly be a matter of technology. More air conditioning, better-designed houses and bigger flood defenses may help to make the effects of a warmer world less harmful. 【1】 In a paper published in Trends & Evolution, a team led by Sara Ryding, a PhD candidate at Deakin University, shows that is already happening. Climate change is already altering the bodies of many animal species, giving them bigger beaks (喙), legs and ears.
In some species of Australian parrot, for instance, beak size has increased by between 4% and 10% since 1871. Another study, this time in North American dark-eyed juncos, another bird, found the same pattern. 【2】
All that is perfectly consistent with evolutionary theory. “Allen’s rule”, named for Joel Asaph Allen, who suggested it in 1877, holds that warm-blooded animals in hot places tend to have larger body parts than those in temperate (温带的) regions. 【3】 Being richly filled with blood vessels, and not covered by feathers, beaks make an ideal place for birds to get rid of heat. Fennec foxes, meanwhile, which are native to the Sahara Desert, have strikingly large ears, especially compared with their Arctic cousins.
Ms. Ryding is not the first researcher to take that approach. But it is hard, when dealing with individual species, to prove that climate change was the cause of an anatomical (解剖学的) changes. All sorts of other factors, from changes in prey to the evolving reproductive preferences of males or females, might have been driving the changes. 【4】 The team combined data from different species in different places. Since they have little in common apart from living on a warming planet, climate change is the most reasonable explanation.
【5】 That may change as warming accelerates. Since any evolutionary adaptation comes with trade-offs (妥协), it is unclear how far the process might go. Bigger beaks might make feeding harder, for instance. Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost more energy to grow.
A.However, looking at the bigger picture makes the pattern clearer.
B.For now, at least, the increase is small, never much more than 10%.
C.Animals will have to rely on changing their bodies or their behaviors.
D.It seems that the future world is going to be hotter than humans are used to.
E.Therefore, the negative effects of a warmer world are visible in these animals’ bodies.
F.Such adaptations boost an animal’s surface area relative to its body, helping it to release extra heat.
G.Similar trends are seen in mammals, with species of mice and bats evolving bigger ears, legs
and wings

23、Television has transformed politics in the United States by changing the way in which information is spread, by altering political campaigns, and by changing citizen’s patterns of response to politics. By giving citizens independent access to the candidates, television reduced the role of the political party in the selection of the major party candidates. By centering politics on the person of the candidate, television accelerated the citizen’s focus on character rather than issues.
Television has altered the forms of political communication as well. The messages on which most of us rely are briefer than they once were. The stump speech, a political speech given by traveling politicians and lasting 1 to 2 hours, which was popular in the nineteenth-century, has given way to the 30-second advertisement and the 10 second “sound bite” in broadcast news. Increasingly the audience for speeches is not that standing in front of the politician but rather the viewing audience who will hear and see a short video of the speech on the news.
In these simplified forms, much of what comprised the traditional political speech of earlier ages has been lost. In 15 or 30 seconds, a speaker cannot establish the historical context that shaped the issue in question, cannot detail the probable causes of the problem, and cannot examine alternative proposals to argue that one is preferable to others. In short videos, politicians assert (断言) but do not argue.
Because television is an intimate (亲密的) medium, speaking through it requires a changed political style that is more conversational, personal, and visual than that of the old-style stump speech. Reliance on television means that increasingly our political world contains memorable pictures rather than memorable words. Schools teach us to analyze words and print. However, in a world in which politics is increasingly visual, informed citizenship requires a new set of skills.
Recognizing the power of television’s pictures, politicians craft televisual, staged events designed to attract media coverage. Much of the political activity we see on television news has been crafted by politicians, their speechwriters, and their public relations advisers for televised consumption. Sound bites in news and answers to questions in debates increasingly sound like advertisements.
【1】What do we know about “stump speech” in paragraph 2?
A.It’s an event created by politicians to attract media attention.
B.It’s an interactive discussion between two politicians.
C.It’s a kind of political presentation typical of the nineteenth century.
D.It’s a style of speech common to televised political events.
【2】It is suggested in paragraph 4 that ________.
A.politicians need to learn to become more personal
B.attractive politicians are favored by citizens
C.citizens tend to favor a politician who analyzed issues
D.citizens need to learn how to evaluate visual political images
【3】What can we infer from the passage?
A.Political presentations today are more like advertisements than in the past.
B.Politicians today tend to be more familiar with the views of citizens than in the past.
C.Citizens today are less informed about a politician’s character than in the past.
D.Political speeches today focus more on details about issues than in the past.
【4】What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Television: an Agent of Change in Politics
B.Television: a Platform for Political Debate
C.Television: an Alternative to Stump Speech
D.Television: a New Medium for Communication
24、Time and money are arguably life's most valuable resources. The phrase“time is money” is usually credited to Benjamin Franklin, who used it in an essay (Advice to a Young Tradesman, 1748). 【1】. He encouraged people to treat time like money. However, most people think about time and money in vastly different ways.
【2】 Poor or rich, we all have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Thus, each of us faces the choice of how to spend our time. In a world of scarcity (短缺), choosing one thing means not being able to do something else.
The value of time varies from person to person. Time is relatively scarce for people with higher incomes, partly because their time is more valuable. So, to have lots of time, rich people hire other people to do their house-hold chores. 【3】.
Time cannot be stored. One of the reasons we give little thought about how we use our limited resources is that we cannot save time. 【4】.You can't bottle time and exchange it for an object or event. However, when people are made aware of their mortality (生命的有限) they wonder if they did make the most of their lives.
In sum, time is anything but free. As a nonrenewable resource, time is quite expensive. 【5】. Do we want to spend these precious moments on social media or spend that time learning something new? Skills and knowledge take time, so the more time you spend on them, the more you improve.
A.However, it cannot be bought at any price
B.Actually, time and money are greatly different from each other
C.Time is our most limited resource
D.On the other hand, a nonworking person may spend more time on household chores
E.Knowing that time is finite encourages us to ask how we are using our time
F.It means time is a valuable resource
G.Time moves on whether we choose to spend it or not
25、Private jets receive ridiculous tax relief that hurt the environment
The blue jeans and T-shirts of the global elite are no more comfortable than those worn by the middle class. They drink the same coffee and carry the same smartphones. But a(n) ________ is growing between the rich and the rest when they fly. Ordinary folk ________ sleeplessly into cheap seats. The elite stretch out Hat, taking naps. This would be no one else’s business but for two things. First, private jets are horribly polluting. Second, they are often and ________ subsidized (补贴).
Private airlines were ________ hard by the global financial crisis, when both companies and individuals sought to reduce expenses. But now private jets are booming again, partly because new booking services and shared-ownership schemes are cutting the cost of going private and ________ busy executives away from first— and business-class seats on regular flights. But the boom is also a result of tax relief, which is even more ________ than those offered to ordinary airlines. America’s rules are ________ still. Its tax reform allowed individuals and companies to avoid paying 100% of the costs of a new or used private jet against their federal taxes, creating extraordinarily cheap jet purchases.
Flying on a private jet can help ________ on time for those whose time is extraordinarily valuable. Since companies can avoid paying their corporate-tax bills by presenting how much these flights cost them, in some countries the use of a private jet is a tax-free ________ for executives. But a growing volume of research suggests that flying them ________ is often a waste of money for shareholders. The jets are often used to fly to places where corporate seniors are more likely to have holiday homes than business meetings. ________, users of such planes are more likely to commit deception: a careless attitude to other people’s money sometimes shades into complete criminality. The environmental effects of corporate jets are awful. The emissions for new supersonic business jets under development will be many times higher. Amazingly, these emissions are largely ________. Airlines are not covered by the Paris agreement to limit climate change, and most private jets are ________ from CORSIA, a carbon-offsetting (碳补偿) scheme involving most airlines.
All air travel is bad for the environment. The tax breaks for cooking the planet in this way cannot be ________. They should all be abandoned. Carbon emissions should be ________, not subsidised by the sleepless masses and the even less fortunate souls who never fly.
