四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, my parents were very busy. And for my generation, we didn’t have the internet. In order to entertain myself, I found pens and paper, and I just started drawing.

At that time, I thought of drawing just as a hobby. But I was tired of studying for school exams. I wanted to do something creative. One day, it hit me: How nice would it be if I could do what I love for a living? I did research on the best art schools around the world. One of my friends studied art in the United States. She advised me to go to the Rhode Island School of Design(RISD). That was the only school I applied to after I graduated from high school.

Luckily, I was accepted into the RISD. There were new skills to learn every day. At first, I was a little confused. I tried many different things. Chris Baselli, one of my teachers, helped me to find my own style.

Now,  I’ve been working as a full-time illustrator( ) for ten years. I’ve drawn for newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. I’ve also worked with companies like McDonald’s and Apple. Some clients(客户) keep coming back to me. They love my style.

When I get an assignment( ), I read it over a lot of times. I try to work out the most important message that I need to include in my work. Then, I forget about the assignment for a while— the best idea often pops up when I am not thinking too hard.

I’m still at the early stage of my career. One of the biggest fears that I have is losing the excitement. I hope that will never happen so that I can keep creating wonderful designs.

  • 26、“Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”

This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in AD(公元)53 wrote it

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives.

But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this, You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no car, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.

One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones.

The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a “trendy, beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things”

【1In the passage the writer describes a picture to show that new inventions _ .

    A. have speeded up our lives

    B. have improve the quality of our lives

    C. may make people feel very happy

    D. may bring people some trouble

【2The family chose to spend some time in a 1940s house because_____

    A. they loved to live simple lives

    B. they wanted to know how people lived without modern inventions

    C. they were troubled by modern inventions

    D. living in a different time would be a lot of fun for them

【3According to the passage, which id NOT right?

    A. People who live far away from noisy cities often seem to be happier.

    B. An unknown Roman was sure that the quality of life would get better.

    C. The family had some changes when they lived in a 1940s house.

    D. With the improvement of our lives, we often feel stressed and tired.

4The passage is mainly about __________

    A. problems with technology

    B. improvements of our lives with technology

    C. changes happening to technology

    D. the importance of technology

  • 27、   Hobbies are also a way of making friends. Starting a new school term is always exciting. It is a chance to see your friends again. But the most exciting of all is that the new term is a chance to take up new hobbies. It is common in Britain for students to take up new hobbies after the Christmas holidays.

Most schools offer different kinds of hobby classes. Students take them in their free periods or after school. You have to pay for some classes and other classes are free. For example, I once took a free Wednesday evening gymnastics class my school offered. But when I learnt how to play the drums, my parents had to pay for the lessons.

The most popular extra classes at my school were piano lessons and drama club. Both classes offered exams that students could take. Students with many hobbies sometimes felt more stressed than those without any. But the students with hobbies left school with many extra skills.

I haven't continued any of the hobbies I began at school. But I have never regretted taking them. My best friend today is someone I met in my gymnastics class.

1For the UK kids, the new term is a chance to ________.

    A.make a New Year's decision B.take up new hobbies

C.relax and have fun D.start a new year

A.it is helpful for you to learn extra skills B.it is not good for you to learn extra skills

C.you're the best if you take hobby classes D.the more hobbies you have, the better you are

4We can know from the passage that the author ________.

A.paid for her gymnastics classes B.regrets taking hobby lessons

C.continues with her childhood hobbies today D.met her best friend in hobby classes

5The best title for this passage is ________.

A.Never give up your hobbies B.Everyone should have a hobby

C.Hobbies play an important role in our life D.Taking up new hobbies is also a way to make friends
