If you ever go to the US and eat at a restaurant, there’s a very important difference you should know about. US people have a custom to give money to waiters and waitresses as a tip for their work.

But why is this? Shouldn’t waiters get paid enough by their bosses? Well, many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage (最低工资) and work for tips to make up for that. According to the American travel website TripAdvisor, some states pay their servers (服务员) only $2.13 (about 14 yuan) per hour.

While no one makes you tip, if you are at a sit-down restaurant, it is usually expected that you tip your waiter 15 to 20 percent of what your bill is.

It’s not just for waiters either. Hotel maids, hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips. But it is much more expected to tip waiters.

The US hasn’t always had this tipping culture. In fact, people were mostly against it until the Prohibition Era (禁酒令时代) in the 1920s. The government said no one could sell alcohol (酒). Then, restaurants had trouble making enough money. So they started to ask people to tip their waiters.

This tipping culture has lasted through the years, but most people don’t like it. Some think restaurant bosses use it as an excuse to not pay their workers well. There isn’t much action being taken to make a change yet. So for now, be sure to tip your waiter when in the US.

【1】If a server works eight hours a day, he can get   from his boss.

    A. $2.13   B. $17.04   C. ¥14

    B. the bosses still made much money

    C. they started to ask people to tip

    A. the waiters and waitresses aren’t well paid in the US

    B. the custom of giving tips only appears in the US

5】About American’s tipping culture, foreign visitors think   .

    A. they need to fight for their own rights

    B. they should “do as the Romans do”

    C. they can leave it alone

  • 25、   A computer program that could help catch and even translate messages from aliens in outer space has been developed by a British scientist.

If aliens are discovered one day, scientists fear their language may make it impossible to understand them. But John Elliott of Leeds Metropolitan University in Britain has come up with a program that can figure out the structure(结构)of their language. He thinks that’s the first step in understanding what they are saying.

Dr Elliott’s program would compare an alien language to a database 数据库) of 60 different languages in the world to look for a similar structure. He believes that even an alien language will have  its own structure. “Language has to be structured in a certain way, or it will be hard to use,” he told New Scientist magazine.

Research had shown that it is possible to know if a signal(信号)carries a language rather than a picture or musicDr Elliott has gone a step further by finding a way to pick out what might be words and sentences. Because languages have different word orders, Dr Elliott has set up a library of the sentence structures of 60 human languages.

If a message is received from outer space, it could be compared against this database. Scientists would then be able to see if it’s similar to any human language, or a mix of the languages.

However, Dr Elliott also said that in order to translate what the aliens are actually saying, it may still be necessary to have a “code(密码)book”.

1Why did Dr Elliott come up with the program?

A.To learn more about outer space.

    B.To develop a new language.

C.To help translate messages from aliens.

D.To compare an alien language to human languages.

2According to Dr Elliott’s opinion, what’s the first step of understanding an alien language?

    A.Coming up with a program.

    B.Knowing its structure.

    C.Understanding aliens.

    D.Discovering aliens.

3What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?

A.Some necessary conditions for making the program work.

B.Dr Elliott’s findings about alien languages.

C.Three important functions of the program.

D.The number of sentence structures of human languages.

4How does the program work when it receives a message from aliens?

A.Mix the message with 60 human languages.

B.Translate the message and send it to the database.

C.Pick out the sentence structure and translate it.

D.Compare the message to the database of 60 human languages.

5What can we infer from the passage?

A.Not all languages have their own structures.

B.To translate alien languages, there is much work to do.

C.The structure of alien languages is similar to that of human languages.

D.Alien languages are signals carrying pictures and music

  • 26、Lin Xiao, 21, a student at Guangdong University, has a big family her two parents, a younger brother and two younger sisters. Lin took her role as the “big sister” seriously. When her first sister was born, Lin took turns with her mom holding the baby late into the night. “I almost did everything that was supposed to be a parent’s job, but I felt proud of myself,” she said.

Not all of Lin’s classmates shared her experiences because of the family planning policy (政策), a law that was carried out in China about forty years ago. But the situation is about to change. A new policy made on October 29 said all couples can now have two children.

The new policy is expected to help raise the population of China. Recently, China has been facing an aging population and labor shortages because of the low birth rate (比率).

The two-child policy may also be the gift for every only child. Researchers found that growing up with a brother or sister can have good influence on one’s mental health.

“Brothers and sisters do matter in unique ways. They give kids something that parents don’t.” Laura Walker, a professor from Beijing University, told China Daily. She noted that having a brother or a sister protects teenagers against loneliness, fear and so on.

Liu Fang, 20, from Shenzhen University, has a 2-year-younger sister. When her sister disagreed with parents over choosing a college major, she helped her to communicate with parents. “If necessary, I would always have her back,” said Liu. “The best part of having a sister is that you have a partner, friend and supporter throughout your life.”

But children with brothers or sisters also have to learn to understand and look after each other, said Laura.

【1】There are ________ children in Lin Xiao’s family.

    A. three B. four C. five D. six

【2】The one-child policy caused some problems except ________.

    A. the aging population B. labor shortages

    C. the population growth   D. the low birth rate

【3】We can infer from the article that ________.

    A. Lin Xiao doesn’t like her sister

    B. Liu Fang has a 17-year-old sister

    C. Laura is against the two-child policy

    D. The one-child policy is out of date now

【4】The best title for this article should be ________.

    A. Brothers and sisters are good for us.

    B. The family planning policy is bad.

    C. The two-child policy helps a lot.

    D. A new policy was made.
