二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Email has brought the art of letter writing back to life, but some experts think the resulting spread of bad English does more harm than good.

Email is a form of communication that is changing, for the worse, the way we write and use language, say some communication researchers. It is also changing the way we interact(交流) and build relationship. These are a few of the recently recognized features of email, say experts, which should cause individuals and organizations to rethink the way they use email.

“Email has increased the spread of careless writing habits,” says Naomi Baron, a professor of linguistics(语言学) at an American university. She says the poor spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure of emails reflect(反映) a growing unconcern about the way we write.

Baron argues that we shouldn’t forgive and forget the poor writing often shown in email. “The more we use email and its tasteless writing, the more it becomes the normal way of writing,” the professor says.

Others say that despite its poor writing, email has finished what several generations of English teachers couldn’t: it has made writing fashionable again.

“Email is a critical new communication technology.” says Ian Lancashire, a professor of English at Toronto University. “It fills the gap between spoken language and the formal methods of writing that existed before email. It is the purest form of written speech.”

Lancashire says email has the mysterious ability to get people who are usually scared by writing to get their thoughts flowing easily onto a blank screen. He says this is because of email’s close similarity to speech. “It’s like a circle of four or five people around a campfire,” he says.

Still, he accepts that this new-found freedom to express themselves often gets people into trouble. Emails sent in a day almost exceed(超过) the number of letters mailed in a year. But more people are recognizing the content of a typical email message is not often exact.

【1】From what Baron says in the third paragraph we can see that ________.

A.careless people use email more than careful people

B.email requires people to change their native language

C.professors in universities don’t need to use email

D.people communicate by email full of mistakes

【2】What does the underlined word “it” (in Paragraph 4) refer to?

    A.The poor writing.

    B.Email.

    C.The good writing.

    D.A new communication technology.

【3】In Lancashire’s opinion, email is a wonderful technology because _______.

A.it can be useful all over the world

B.it is the fastest way to communicate

C.we can express ourselves in a free way

D.we can save a lot of paper

【4】This passage mainly shows us that ______.

A.people should stop using email to communicate

B.experts hold different opinions about email writing

C.Americans only use email to communicate

D.email makes people lose interest in English

  • 27、Ever wondered if dogs can learn new words? Yes, say researchers as they have found that talented dogs may have the ability to learn new words after hearing them only four times.

While previous evidence(以前的证据)seems to show that most dogs do not learn words, unless very well trained, a few individuals(个体) have shown some extraordinary(不一般的) abilities, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

“We wanted to know under which conditions the talented dogs may learn new words,” said researcher xuekw Claudia Fugazza from the Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary(匈牙利). For the study, the team involved(包含)two gifted dogs, Whisky and Vicky Nina. The team exposed(暴露)the dogs to the new words in two different conditions.

In the exclusion-based(基于排除的)task, presented with seven known toys and one new toy, the dogs were able to select(选择)the new toy when presented with a new name. Researchers say this proves that dogs can choose by exclusion(排除)when faced with a new word, they selected the only toy which did not have a known name.

However, this was not the way they would learn the name of the toy. In fact, when they were presented with one more equally(同等地)new name to test their ability to recognize the toy by its name, the dogs got totally confused and failed.

The other condition, the social one, where the dogs played with their owners who pronounced the name of the toy while playing with the dog, proved to be the successful way to learn the name of the toy, even after hearing it only 4 times. “The rapid learning that we observed seems to equal children’s ability to learn many new words at a fast velocity around the age of 18 months,” Fugazza says. “But we do not know whether the learning mechanisms(机制)behind this learning are the same for humans and dogs. ”

To test whether most dogs would learn words this way, 20 other dogs were tested in the same condition, but none of them showed any evidence of learning the toy names, confirming(确认)that the ability to learn words rapidly in the absence(缺乏)of formal training is very rare(少) and is only present in a few talented dogs.

【1】What was the purpose of the study published in Scientific Reports?

A.To better train dogs’ ability to learn new words.

B.To further make sure of previous evidence about dogs.

C.To confirm the dogs can learn words.

D.To find out suitable conditions for gifted dogs’ new-word learning.

【2】How did the dogs react(反应) when exposed to two new names in the first condition?

    A.Slow to understand.

    B.Quick to learn.

    C.In puzzlement.

    D.In surprise.

【3】What was found about dogs’ new-word learning in the social condition?

A.Learning through playing applied to most dogs.

B.The social condition helped dogs learn new words.

C.Dogs’ new-word learning turned out to be less effective.

D.Dogs shared similar learning mechanisms with children.

【4】The underlined word “velocity” has the same meaning as ________ .

    A.speed

    B.quality

    C.time

    D.journey

  • 28、   “Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.

“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same  tone(腔调) with a fixed procedure (步骤). They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business.

The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it shows the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don't know what to say. “Oh, you may have a tooth out? I'm terribly sorry, but have a nice day.”

The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don't know has tried to be nice to you.

Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it's nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don't care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.

1How does the author understand Maxie’s words?

A.Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.

B.Maxie really wishes the author a good day.

C.Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.

D.Maxie really worries about the author's security.

2What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.The salesgirl is rude. B.The salesgirl is annoyed.

C.The salesgirl cares about me. D.The salesgirl says the words insincerely.

3By saying “Have a nice day”, a stranger may ______.

A.try to be polite to you B.express respect to you

C.give his blessing to you D.share his pleasure with you

4What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Have a Nice Day--- a Social Custom.

    B.Have a Nice Day--- a Pleasant Gesture.

    C.Have a Nice Day--- a Heart-warming Greeting.

D.Have a Nice Day--- a Polite Ending of a Conversation.
