  • 27、Some of the recent scientific studies have found that people who receive higher education live longer than those who do not. According to a new study, reading books extends lifespan (寿命) by up to two years, and the more often you read, the better.

Back in 1975, economists concluded that longer lifespan is linked to the wealth of a person, and that wealth itself increases lifespan. It seemed self-evident: everything people need to be healthy from food to medical care costs money. But soon it was realized that the data didn’t always fit that theory. Economic success didn’t always mean longer lives. In the 1980s, researchers found gaining higher education is connected with a greater increase in lifespan than gains in wealth.

One fact is of teachers and college professors: they live longer than the rest of the population. The reason is that they take part in research most of their lives for teaching or publishing, which increases their lifespan and most importantly also retards their aging process.

Let’s look at what benefits educated people. Educated people get routinely involved in social networks; they get access to information because of their ability to understand information. They can easily make use of the health care system; they have more social support.

Reading helps us understand how other people think and feel. Reading improves our emotional intelligence. This understanding can improve the quality of a person’s life as it would allow the person to act with better judgment and have more insight into the feelings and thought patterns of others. Research has shown that reading changes certain areas of the brain and causes certain other parts to be active. This effect can also be observed in adults who learn to read much later in life. Learning has no age limit. Each and every human is born with the right to be educated. So, don’t hold back your urge to learn. The goal of education is to improve intelligence as well as the lifespan.

【1】What conclusion did economists in 1975 draw?

A.People need high-quality food to keep healthy.

B.Medical care costs more money than food.

C.Most old people have the habit of reading.

D.Wealthy people tend to live longer.

【2】What did researchers find in the 1980s?

A.Health has nothing to do with wealth.

    B.Education does affect people’s lifespan.

C.Economic success always belongs to professors.

D.Children from poor families can rarely gain higher education.

【3】What does the underlined word “retards” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Speeds up.

    B.Turns back.

    C.Slows down.

    D.Contributes to.

【4】What can we know about reading from the last paragraph?

A.It can help people understand humans’ brain better.

B.It is beneficial to people’s EQ and brain health.

    D.It is effective against cancer.

  • 28、Robert Jarvik, born on May 11, 1946 in Michigan and raised in Stamford, is a medical scientist and researcher, who played an important role in the invention of the artificial heart. He was interested in medicine from a young age. He watched his father perform operations and gained a patent (专利权) for a machine applied in the medical operation before he graduated from high school.

Jarvik attended Syracuse University and considered a career in art. When his father developed heart disease suddenly, he decided then to work on a medical career. He applied to medical schools, but was not admitted to any schools in the US. Before long, he was admitted to the medical school in Italy and stayed there for two years. He returned to get a degree in medicine from New York University in 1971.

After working for a period of time; Jarvik got a job in the organ transplant (器官移植) program at the University of Utah in 1972. He worked with the director of the program, Willem Kolff, who invented the kidney dialysis (肾透析) machine.

By the time Jarvik came to the University of Utah, the organ program had already developed the primary artificial heart. He improved it by creating a diaphragm (横膈膜), which solved many issues with the heart. Eventually, he created the first artificial heart in 1981, the Jarvik-7, to be placed in a human patient, which was considered one of the most important inventions in human history.

Barney Clark, a retired dentist suffering from serious heart disease, received the Jarvik-7 transplant on December 2, 1982. He lived for 112 days after the operation, but the transplant was considered a success. Though receiving criticism for the risk referred to transplant an artificial heart, the Jarvik-7 still became very important for patients who were waiting for a heart. In 1987, Jarvik moved to New York City and formed Jarvik Research Inc. He began developing a new heart — the Jarvik 2000. This smaller machine fits inside a patient’s heart rather than replacing the entire organ.

【1】How does the writer develop the passage?

    A.By presenting some research results.

B.By following the natural time order.

    C.By discussing research experiments.

D.By comparing opinions from different fields.

【2】Which of the following incidents made Robert Jarvik determine his life-long career?

A.His father developed heart disease suddenly.

B.He received a patent for the medical operation.

C.He took part in the organ program at the University of Utah.

D.He was refused to be admitted to any medical school in the US.

【3】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.He invented the kidney dialysis machine.

B.His greatest achievement was the man-made artificial heart.

    C.He created a diaphragm to replace a patient’s heart.

D.He did the first heart transplant operation for a heart patient

  • 29、The Cure for Concrete

Dutch microbiologist Hendrik Jonkers studies bacteria. He also has researched how certain living beings are able to heal themselves when injured. When a bone breaks in the human body, it is able to repair itself. Jonkers wondered if bacteria (细菌)could be used to “heal” nonliving stuff in a similar way. He tested this theory by adding bacteria to concrete (混凝土). He discovered that concrete may also be able to recover from damage.

Concrete is one of the most important building materials. It is used to construct highways, bridges, and high-rise buildings. In fact, concrete demand has doubled in the last decade. Concrete production now accounts for 5% of the world’s carbon emissions, which is harmful to the environment.

Despite its popularity, concrete cracks. When water gets inside the cracks, it weakens the composition of concrete. Eventually the concrete must be repaired or replaced. In Europe the annual cost of maintaining concrete structures is billions of dollars.

Jonkers has developed a self-healing concrete, or bioconcrete, to help solve these problems. He combines concrete with bacteria that are naturally able to produce limestone, a hard rock. The bacteria are placed inside plastic containers that are mixed into wet concrete. The bacteria can live in the hardened concrete for decades. When water enters through cracks in the concrete, the plastic containers open, and the bacteria are released. As the bacteria grow and multiply, they form limestone, which fills in the cracks. Jonkers'bioconcrete has been used on the floors and roofs of parking garages and buildings.

While bioconcrete has its advantages, it is 50 percent more costly to create than traditional concrete. This makes some people in the construction industry reluctant to use the product. Still, Jonkers believes the initial investment is worth the long-term savings and advantages it will provide—reducing the need for repairs, making new concrete and the amount of carbon pollution.

【1】Why does the author talk about “a bone repairing itself” in the first paragraph?

A.To stress the importance of Jonker’s research.

B.To advocate more research concerning bone injuries.

C.To suggest that bacteria could improve people’s health.

D.To show the way concrete can recover from water damage.

【2】What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

    A.The popularity of concrete.

    B.The composition of concrete.

    C.The disadvantage of concrete.

    D.The cost of repairing concrete.

【3】What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean?

    A.pleased.

    B.inspired.

    C.hesitant

    D.unconcerned

【4】What do we know about bioconcrete?

A.It works best in areas affected by flood.

B.The bacteria come out whenever it rains.

C.It does not need to be repaired or replaced.

D.The bacteria can form a hard rock to repair the cracks.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Alexa and Brittany were best friends. They’d known each other since Brittany moved next door in 2nd grade. They hung out almost every day after school when they were getting along.

They were very different people. Alexa did great with her school work, read a lot of books, and took ballet classes. Brittany, on the other hand, would rather play soccer, chat with other kids at school, and rarely sat still for long enough to finish reading a chapter of a book.

Often, Alexa and Brittany would play together at the park across the street. They’d play on the equipment, or play soccer. If it was raining outside, they’d go in one of their houses to play video games, or do their nails. Some days they could spend hours together without a single problem, but other days they just could not agree on what to do.

One day, Alexa said. “Come on, let’s play on the equipment. We’ve played soccer for the last three days!”

“They just cut the grass, I love playing soccer when the grass is nice and short. I don’t want to play on the equipment,” Brittany replied.

“We always do what you want to do, Brittany. It’s my turn to choose.” Alexa was getting frustrated.

“Fine, go play on the equipment by yourself! I’m playing soccer,” Brittany shouted.

Alexa left. She was really angry. When she got home, she realized she still had Brittany’s notebook. “Well, I’m not giving it back today. I’m too mad at her.” Alexa thought.

The next day at school, their teacher asked for their notebooks. Brittany didn’t have hers, and asked Mrs. Stone if she could bring it in tomorrow instead. Mrs. Stone let them have just one late assignment a month, but Brittany had already used hers. Brittany looked upset. Alexa was having an internal (内心的) conflict. She knew she should tell Mrs. Stone that she had the notebook, but she was still mad at Brittany for not agreeing with her at the park yesterday. At last, she decided to admit her mistake.
