  • 26、One of the best-known American writers of children’s books is Alfred Strong, or Doctor Strong, as he is better known to readers everywhere. Now, an art show called “Doctor Strong From Then to Now” is travelling around the United States. The pictures and drawings show the history of Doctor Strong.

    Doctor Strong first became famous almost fifty years ago when his first children’s book was published. Since then, he has written forty-five books that have sold more than one hundred million copies around the world.

    Doctor Strong’s books are known for their easy use of words and colorful, hand-drawn pictures. These drawings bring life to his imaginary creatures. The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and hundreds of others.

    The San Diego Museum, in California, organized the art show. It included about three hundred Doctor Strong’s original(最早的) drawings and some of his writings.

    Most of Doctor Strong’s books, although written in a funny way, have serious messages. For example, in Mc Elligot’s Pool, he describes the danger of pollution. He discusses the arms race in The Butter Battle Book, written in 1984.

    Love and Learning: it provides volunteers to help children with learning disabilities. Read books out loud to groups of children aged four to six, or read one-on-one with struggling readers aged seven to eight.

  • 28、Stephanie Duno is many things: a straight-A student, an animal lover, and a loving sister. But she is also one of the many victims(受害者) of bullying(欺凌).     “You need to tell someone if you are being bullied and know that you’re not alone. There are so many people that you talk to. It will stop if you contact someone. No one deserves to be bullied,” said Duno.

    When she was working part-time at a veterinary clinic(兽医诊所), Duno realised helping animals in need made her feel better about herself. She decided to put her love of animals together with her desire to stop bullying by creating a non-profit organization, Pawssible. In the organisation, victims of bullying can help nurse animals back to health.

    With all her hard work, it is no surprise that she has been rewarded. Duno is one of the ten people who have received a national anti-bullying scholarship award. But in Duno’s eyes the true reward is not the award.

    “I love helping people. I love seeing their faces and knowing that I’m the one to make them happy. It’s a really rewarding feeling. Everyone deserves love and that is what I want these kids to leave with,” she said.

Inside a DC-8 aircraft, there is a fully-equipped teaching hospital with television studio and classroom. Doctors are taught the latest techniques of bringing sight back to people there. Project ORBIS also aims at promoting peaceful cooperation (合作) among countries.

    ORBIS tries to help developing countries by providing training during three-week medical programs. ORBIS has taught sight-saving techniques to over 35,000 doctors and nurses, who continue to cure tens of thousands of blind people every year. ORBIS has conducted 17 plane programs is China so far. For the seven to ten million blind in China ORBIS is planning to do more for them. At the moment an ORBIS is working on a long-term plan to develop a training center and to provide eye care service to Shanxi Province. ORBIS needs your help to continue their work and free people from blindness.

    For just US$38, you can help one person see; for $380 you can bring sight to 10 people; $1,300 helps teach a doctor new skills; and for $13,000 you can provide a training program for a group of doctors who can make thousands of blind people see again.
