二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When I step out onto the deck, I definitely feel the Arctic chill. That’s not surprising. I’m a good hundred miles inside the Arctic Circle; in fact, you can’t get much farther north and still be in Sweden. This is Abisko Mountain Station, perhaps the crown jewel of the Swedish mountain lodges (小屋). I’m back for a second time to this remote, scenic spot.

Last Autumn, a heavy snowstorm trapped me in my tent for days and eventually forced me to go to the station, a comfortable place. I discovered a different side to Abisko. People come here for many reasons – some to hike, some to climb, some to cross-country ski. But there’s yet another entirely different attraction here. Looking out from the deck of the train station, above a huge lake, in the upper sky of the North Pole, the Aurora, as we often refer to the northern light, mixed with green and red, was giving off ghostly light, rolling across the dark night sky.

The Aurora may be old hat to those who live this far north, but for the rest of us it is an unforgettable experience. The lights here were so appealing to us we quickly forgot the discomfort of the cold.

One of the attractions in Abisko is the Tornetrask. It’s a huge lake, which extends more than 70 kilometres long just north of the station, creates an unusual weather phenomenon that keeps the skies above the station clear even when fog or clouds blanket most of northern Sweden. The sky in this area is mostly clear all year around.

Abisko has a lot to offer to make it an ideal place to view the Aurora. It is far from any city lights. The station operates a ski lift to the top of Nuolja Peak, more than 3,000 feet high. For the first time this year, a cafe at the top of the mountain has been turned into a viewing platform for the Northern Lights, called the Aurora Sky Station. Also, the station posts forecasts each night of expected Aurora activity, collected from scientific observations arriving via computer, so visitors may choose the best viewing time.

【1】What was the reason for the author’s first visit to the lodge?

A.He went there in search of the Aurora.

B.He needed equipment to keep him warm.

C.He was forced there by the weather.

D.He had to make his food supply there.

【2】The phrase “old hat” in 3rd paragraph probably mean “________”.

    A.severe and struggling

    B.familiar and unexciting

    C.strange and shocking

    D.mysterious and adventurous

【3】According to the last paragraph, which of the following is NOT a factor that makes Abisko an ideal place to view the Aurora?

A.There is a mountain viewing platform.

    B.Weather forecasts are available.

C.There are no city lights nearby.

D.There is a café shop there.

【4】The author’s overall opinion of Abisko is that ________.

A.despite the severe weather, it’s an impressive place

    B.people have overestimated its popularity

C.it’s not as popular as it deserves to be

D.the cold weather worsens the Aurora viewing experience there

  • 23、   Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was born on 9 June, 1836, in Whitechapel, East London. She was expected to marry well and live the life of a lady. However, meetings with the feminist(女权主义者) Emily Davies and Elizabeth Blackwell, the first American woman physician, convinced Elizabeth Garrett that she should become a doctor.

This was unheard of at that time and her attempts to study at a number of medical schools were refused. She enrolled(入学) as a nursing student at Middlesex Hospital and attended classes for male doctors, but was driven out after complaints from other students. As the Society of Apothecaries did not specifically forbid women from taking its examinations, in 1865 she passed their exams and gained a certificate which enabled her to become a doctor. The Society then changed its rules to prevent other women entering the profession this way.

In 1866, she set up a clinic for women in London, thanks to her father’s backingin 1870 she was made a visiting physician to the East London Hospital. There she met James Anderson, a successful businessman, who she married in 1871.

In 1872, Anderson founded the New Hospital for Women in London, staffed entirely by women. She appointed her spiritual guide, Elizabeth Blackwell, as a professor there.

Anderson’s efforts paved the way for other women, and in 1876 an act was passed permitting women to enter the medical professions. In 1883, Anderson was appointed to manage the London School of Medicine for Women, which she had helped to found in 1874. It was the first medical school in Britain to train women as doctors.

Anderson, Britain’s first female doctor, retired in 1902. Six years later, she became the mayor(市长) of Aldeburgh, the first female mayor in England. Anderson died on 17 December, 1917.

1Why did the Society change its rules?

    A.To provide certificates for women.

B.To forbid women to take its exams.

C.To offer programs to train women doctors.

D.To encourage women to attend medical schools.

  • 24、There’s a song by the great Jamaican singer Bob Marley called So Much Trouble In The World. Marley understood that part of the reason why there are so many problems in the world is the lack of tolerance between people. The UN understands this too—that’s why it made Nov 16 “International Day for Tolerance”.

But first of all, what is tolerance? French philosopher Voltaire (1694—1778) can give us some help. According to him, tolerance “is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty (脆弱) and error; let us pardon each other’s folly—that is the first law of nature.”

Nobody’s perfect. When we’re tempted to criticize another person, we should perhaps remember our own imperfections first.

Very often, people don’t realize that they’re intolerant. This is because intolerance has a lot to do with ignorance. For example, the UN’s campaign is in part about the treatment of females by males. But often, the behavior of men toward women is intolerant because men don’t put themselves in the shoes of women.

It’s worth thinking a little about the words “tolerance” and “intolerance”. Are they the best words to describe the evils of which we’re speaking here? To agree to be “tolerant” of someone isn’t necessarily a very respectful thing. When someone is tolerated, it implies that there’s something wrong with them.

But it seems wrong that people should agree to “tolerate” people with black skin, for example. And should women think they have received the respect they are due when men agree to “tolerate” them?

Still, what Voltaire said stands: We humans are not perfect and this weakness is something that we all share. That’s the reason we should be tolerant.

It’s a little like generosity. We can give things to another person, and we can also give our forgiveness. Bob Marley understood this. In the song mentioned above, he advised: “Write your love on a rock so it stays for eternity; write your hate in the sand so the waves will wash it away.”

【1】According to Voltaire, tolerance is ________.

A.being willing to express your love to others

    B.trying to overcome your imperfections

C.giving a hand to vulnerable groups (弱势群体)

    D.accepting each other’s weaknesses

【2】Why are people usually unaware of their intolerance, according to the article?

A.They are used to finding faults.

B.They consider tolerance a kind of frailty.

C.They don’t see things from the angle of others.

D.They are intolerant of themselves too.

【3】In what sense is “tolerance” similar to “generosity”?

A.Humans are advised to treat others better.

B.Humans learned to find faults in others.

C.Humans need to give something to others.

D.Humans will change their attitudes to others.

【4】The underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refers to ________.

    A.giving things to others

    B.forgiving others

C.different attitudes toward love and hate

D.the fact that humans are imperfect

    【5】What’s the text mainly about?

A.The origin of the International Day of Tolerance.

B.The meaning and importance of tolerance.

C.The philosophy behind Bob Marley’s song.

    D.Effective ways to show tolerance.
