  • 21、   I grew up 3 hours outside of Pittsburgh, with my mother and 3 younger brothers and sisters. My mom was a single mother and worked a minimum wage job, so we never had much, but that was OK, we made ends meet anyhow.

In Senior 1, I started saving money for college by taking a part-time job. I was accepted into the University of Pittsburgh and received some scholarships. But I couldn’t afford the housing because it was way too expensive for me. As result, put mattress (床垫) in an old van (货车) and had the windows painted. I bought parking pass on campus, chose spot on the top level of the parking garage and lived there for the next 2 years.

The weather in Pittsburgh was bad Being homeless forced me to take advantage of everything the campus had to offer since I wanted to spend as little time in my van as possible. I ended up spending most of my time throughout the week at the library and studying and reviewing classroom material a lot more than I would have if I had the luxury of going home and turning on the TV or falling asleep for hours in my room. I got close to some of my professors because of visiting them often, which really helped me become outstanding among my classmates. I made lot of new friends by attending social events, plays, charities, student life events around campus too.

Before college I would have considered myself shy, I didn’t really speak much unless spoken to, but I move out of my comfort zone and do new things, then develop an outgoing personality.

I really think that having to deal with the struggles that I had to go through really made me a better person.

1From the first paragraph, we can learn that the author lived a ________ life.

    A.hard B.painful C.boring D.happy

2Where did the author live during his college life?

A.In the van. B.In his own house.

D.Learning to overcome difficulties in life.

  • 22、   Bullitt Group, the global licensee for Cat phones, recently announced the availability of the Cat S42 H + smartphone with advanced antimicrobial(抗菌的) product protection. For over a decade, Cat phones have led the way in making mobile phones stronger for the needs of heavy work and the hard knocks. Now, Cat is also setting a new standard in hygiene(卫生).

The Cat S42 H + (Hygiene Plus Innovation) is the first device of its kind with permanently enhanced antimicrobial product protection built into its body. Every outside component of its hardware has been mixed with an antimicrobial silver ion(离子) technology additive called Biomaster to help fight bacteria. Tested to the international ISO 22196 standard, the active antimicrobial agent is proven to prevent bacteria cells from reproducing by over 80% within 15 minutes and 99. 9% within 24 hours.

Like all Cat phones, the Cat S42 H+ can be fully put in warm soapy water and repeatedly washed. Additionally, it has been put under extreme clean testing. It has been wiped 3, 000 times, subjected to pressurized alcohol testing and used with real world chemical mixtures. Together, this combination sets a new standard in hygienic phone design.

Mobile phones are recognized by the WHO as a potential carrier of bacteria and virus. Studies have shown the mobile phone in your pocket is 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat.

“One of the reasons why our phones are so dirty is the heat they produce. Warm environments are pleasant for bacteria to live and reproduce, and we all take our mobile phones everywhere with us, to all the places we live and work, constantly picking up new pollutants. We are proud to introduce this antimicrobial phone to help reduce these risks," said Peter Cunningham, Vice President at Bullitt Group.

From nurses to bellmen, delivery drivers, ground crew, or anyone constantly exposed to other people, this combination of easy clean phone with antimicrobial treatment can make a difference.

【1】How does the text show the ability of the Cat S42 H+ to fight bacteria?

    A.By making comparisons.

【3】Why are ordinary phones so dirty according to Peter Cunningham?

A.They are not used in a proper way.

  • 23、   Hi, I'm Amanda! I was asked to share more about my experience as an online student of Virtual High School to give you a better idea of what it's like, or at least what it was like for me. Usually I was working on four courses at a time, just as if I were in a brick-and-mortar high school. But unlike students in a brick-and-mortar school, I did not work for a set amount of time each day. Sometimes I would spend the whole day on English, and on another I would study among all four, depending on how focused I was or what I felt motivated to do. I loved skating during my high school years, both as a competitor and a coach. Below is an example of what a typical day was like for me.

    6:00 am—8:00 am: Skating

9:00 am—10:30 am: Read content for English

10:30 am—10:45 am: Break (usually a walk outside, catching up with friends, etc.)

10:45 am—12:00 pm: Begin brainstorming and do primary research for English assignments

    12:00 pm—12:30 pm: Lunch

12: 30 pm—3 :30 pm: Read content for maths, work through exercises, start a maths assignment 4:00 pm—7 :00 pm: Skating and coaching

A common question I would get was, “Do you spend a lot of time in front of the computer to do the courses?” The answer is “yes”. It is an online school, after all. That does not mean that you are tied to a desk, however. Like students in brick-and-mortar schools, I took notes by hand so that I wasn’t always typing or looking at a screen. I often went to the library to find books for my research and English courses.

【1】How many courses did Amanda have?

    A.Two.

    B.Three.

    C.Four.

    D.Five.

【2】When did Amanda study maths according to the example of a typical day?

    A.Between 10:45 am and 12:00 pm.

    B.Between 12:30 pm and 3 :30 pm.

    C.Between 12:00 pm and 2:30 pm.

    D.Between 3 :30 pm and 7:00 pm.

【3】What did Amanda always do as an online student?

A.She wrote down notes by hand.

    B.She wrote online English books.

C.She took classes in the library.

D.She took her notes by typing.
