21、 Trash and garbage are other words for waste things that people no longer want or need. In San Francisco, they are also words for art. A local recycling(资源回收利用) company created a program to make artists reuse unwanted objects. Artists are paid to work for four months on transforming (转化) things like old tires, toys and paint.
Ma Li is one of the artists at the center. She is working on a project that includes plastic bottles and cloth. She is turning them into a moving sculpture(雕塑) with stars, flowing hair and dancers. Ms Li says she learned recycling from her parents while growing up in China in the 1980s. It was a time when the country was poorer and more concerned about saving money than it is today. A gallery(画廊) in Los Angeles is showing some of the art from San Francisco project. Each year more than 5,000 children and adults visit shows created by the artists.
Mike Sangiacomo controls the recycling company. He says he hopes to see as much waste as possible reused. “Along the way, if some of it is made into some fun pieces of art and draws(吸引) people’s attention to the issue(问题), we think it’s a great way to do something that’s good for our society.”
And the project shows how a little imagination can change one person’s trash into another’s art work.

22、 The novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP, 新型冠状病毒肺炎) outbreak in China was caused by a new coronavirus that we have never seen before. It was first found in the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, where a variety of wild animals were on sale. People who sold and bought animals illegally were the first to be infected.
Scientists have found that the virus likely came from bats and was then spread to humans from pangolins (穿山甲). According to Live Science, bats can carry and spread more than 60 viruses that can infect humans. They include the world’s deadliest viruses, such as Ebola and SARS. But bats have special immune systems that allow them to live with viruses without getting sick. Other wild animals like snakes and hedgehogs (刺猬) are also hosts of many viruses.
There have been calls for people to stop eating wild animals. However, the danger is not just in eating them, but also in touching them. People can get infected if they come into contact with the body fluids (体液) of wild animals. People who hunt, kill, sell or eat these animals run the risk of becoming infected.
Keeping wild animals as pets or selling parts of their bodies as animal products also create risks for humans. It is highly possible to come into contact with the body fluids of wild animals in this way.
“Trade and consumption of wild animals of all kinds should be banned,” Zeng Guang, chief epidemiologist (流行病学家) at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told China Daily. “Otherwise people will suffer.”

Ms. Lee,
I love you and your classes. They are always interesting and full of surprises. Wish you a good holiday! Well, Steve, Ella and I want to improve our English during the holidays. We’ve no idea what to do. Any good advice?
Mary
Stopping here, Ms. Lee began to think carefully. “Steve spends lots of time remembering words, but always forgets most of them quickly! Ella didn’t do well in the final exam. She has to go over her lessons a lot. Mary will go to a writing competition. She needs to read more and improve her writing in a short time.”
Just then, her phone rang. It was a message from her best friend, an English teacher in another middle school. Her friend suggested a trip to Hong Kong.
