Their story began in 2000, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither (两个都不) could find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented (租用) some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee (费用).
Haixia and Wenqi never imagined (想象) that they would end up creating an environmental paradise (天堂). Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. Moreover, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season.

Do you know what makes you happy? Write a list of all the things that make you happy. If you s【1】your time doing all these fun things, you’ll be really happy.
For most people, fun isn’t e【2】for real happiness. Paul Dolan wrote a book called Happiness by Design. He thinks happiness comes from both pleasure and p【3】. If most of the things on your list are about pleasure, that is what you think makes you happy. But you also need activities with purpose.
If you’re a student, your “j【4】” is studying and passing exams. It’s easy to do well in subjects you like, but subjects you don’t like are less motivating ( 激 励 的 ). They’re not fun for you, but you have to studythem so you need to f【5】purpose. An “A” in a subject you hate won’t help the world. But can you be part of a study team with friends? Each person can study one part until they understand it and then teach it to the
r【6】of the group. The purpose becomes helping the team.
Go back to your list of things that make you happy. How many of them are activities that bring purpose? Can you a【7】any more examples? Remember, some activities might bring both pleasure and purpose.
Now you need to design a happy life. Paul Dolan b【8】people should “decide, design, do”. First decide what brings you pleasure and/or purpose --- that means your two lists. T【9】, don’t just think about these activities, fill your life with them. For example, you love riding a bike but n【10】have time to do it. So, ride to school or the library or the shops. Some parts of our lives are good or bad luck, but we can still design the rest to make more happiness.
