21、 “O gentle sleep!/Nature’s soft nurse, how have I frightened thee/That thou no more wilt weigh my eyelids down.”Henry IV, as portrayed by Shakespeare, would have sympathized with people who struggle with insomnia (失眠). Now a major publisher has come up with a novel idea.
In a project to be launched this week, Penguin Random House has cooperated with the Sleep Council and the Children’s Sleep Charity in creating collections of “Sleep Tales” for adults and children. Combining “cutting-edge technology and the ancient art of storytelling to help solve an age-old problem”, these audiobooks are part soundscape, part descriptive narrative, with softly spoken voices to calm anxieties and take listeners to the land of nod.
Each story lasts about 15 minutes, enabling listeners to set their sleep timer. The stories draw on the Sleep Council’s research into sounds that help people wind down, such as waves lapping on a shore, soft rainfall and birdsong.
Richard Lennon, publisher at Penguin Audio, told the Guardian the project was inspired partly by the realization that increasing numbers of people were listening to audio books “as they’re going to sleep or as part of their bedtime routine”. He said both adults and children respond to something comforting and familiar as they are nodding off.
Asked whether a boring story could have the same effect, he said the stories needed to be “engaging enough not to put you off”: “This is about creating the right environment and headspace for you … to go to sleep. Strangely, if you’re bored, it doesn’t have that effect.” Audience research had been very positive, Lennon said. One listener reported: “The story made my mind stop racing.”

22、Hello, Stranger
Attitudes to strangers tend to follow a familiar pattern. Children are taught never to speak to unknown grown-ups, especially those regarded by their parents as untrustworthy. The onset of adolescence and young adulthood brings a bursting desire to interact with all sorts of people, which. of course, might not gain family approval.
【1】
Social circles generally narrow again as people find life-partners, form households and produce offspring of their own. Time becomes scarce; new friendships are often based on sharing the burden of child care. 【2】As is often the ease, that is because professional duties expand even as parental ones diminish. Then in old age, even if ouriosity and charisma remain undimmed, lack of mental and psychological energy makes new serendipitous connections harder to establish.
But that is not the whole story. 【3】 However short, it somehow touches a nerve. It might involve nothing more than a smile, or a chance remark that hits an emotional spot; or it might be an unexpectedly deep conversation on a plane or train, a surge of mutual understanding that is life-affirming even if the companion is never seen again.
In the age of covid-19 and Zoom, the chronological pattern has been changed. Instead of their vague possibilities and risks, strangers have assumed the all-too-literal role as a looming source of infection. During lock-downs they are officially to be avoided. Yet youngsters still long dangerously, for the pleasure of interaction, not just with individuals but anonymous crowds. 【4】 And we can hear the burden of wearing a mask through the whole movie just to enjoy the comforting sense of fellowship in a cinema or theatre audience.
A.This aspect of the story and fear of strangers has bring about frustration among people.
B.Some people never recover the youthful enthusiasm for unforeseen encounters.
C.Middle-aged people gradually realize that the exchange will be a one-off which can permit freedom and frankness.
D.People of all ages have come to miss the human stimulation of busy high streets or trains.
E.In mid-life and beyond people can still experience the joy of a random meeting.
F.Despite this, the resulting interactions can generate an appealing feeling of escaping familiarity.
23、For many of us, it is more pleasurable to look at pictures of beautiful sunrises than to get up and actually see beautiful sunrises. However, Bugsy Sailor wanted to challenge himself last year. He decided to take a picture of the sunrise every single morning of 2019. He called the project “Year of the Sunrise”.
Sailor lives in Marqutte and is the owner of the Upper Peninsula Supply Company. He describes himself as a “sometime” photographer. It had been Sailor’s New Year’s Day tradition since 2013 to photograph the first sunrise of the year. But last year, he decided to step it up a degree. “It was exactly the day before, December 31, 2018, I was like well, what if I just watch every sunrise of 2019?” The beauty of the sunrise on the first day of 2019 convinced Sailor that it was something he could stick with for the whole 365 days.
Most of the photos feature Lake Superior. There are plenty of photos featuring the beautiful orange horizons, but in others, the sun is apparently missing. But Sailor said, “Every morning was worth capturing, even when snow or clouds blocked the sunrise itself. It’s still there, the sun is still rising. And that’s part of the commitment. And I think the more cloudy days in a row, the greater the reward is once you have a clear, beautiful, orange day.”
As an almost daily visitor to the shore of Lake Superior, Sailor had a unique opinion on the lake’s record-high water levels. He said water levels in the Great Lakes last year caused significant beach erosion and damage to lakeside homes. Recording each sunrise of 2019, Sailor said, allowed him to develop a deeper relationship with the lake and the surrounding nature. It also served as a moment of reflection on the year.

24、When I was younger, I always knew my parents had trouble with money. We would go to yard sales all the time, buy everyday supplies and work at and eat at a soup kitchen 4 nights a week.
One day, a new man walked into the soup kitchen and asked me what my name was. As I told him my name was Angela, my mom handed me the soup ladle and hair net to start work. After that, I couldn’t find the strange man again. I searched everywhere and even asked others in the kitchen if they had seen him. My mom thought I was going crazy, saying there was no one with me when she came to me. She said I had been sitting alone and that it seemed I was talking to myself. Later that night, my mom was crying. I asked her why and she told me the rent on our apartment had gone up and that my grandma had died. She didn’t know how she was going to pay for the funeral and the rent. I promised her I would help pick up small items after she made as much money as possible.
Once we got into the apartment building, she asked me to grab the mail in the mail room. I went and only found one single envelope. A familiar man called me back saying I probably left something in our mailbox. I reached in and pulled out a huge manila envelope that looked bulky, but I couldn’t tell what was in it. I brought the envelopes up to my mom. She opened the first one and found our first super expensive rent bill. She then walked into her room, saying she couldn’t handle to open the other one. I looked at the second envelope and saw this:
“Dear Angela and Family. Love, Your Friend.” My mom ripped the envelope open, tears streaming down her face. She emptied the contents onto the bed. I brought a hand to my face, wiping away multiple tears. There on the bed were countless checks, all addressed to my mom.
I had a feeling that I knew who had sent it, but didn’t want to tell my mom—my friend from the soup kitchen.
