21、A great woman once said, "Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be a challenge to others." These are the words of the US pilot Amelia Earhart (1897—1937), a pioneer in aviation (航空领域), who was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Her story ended in mystery when she disappeared without a trace (踪迹) during a flight over the Pacific Ocean.
Theories about what happened to Earhart were proposed, but nothing was ever confirmed until now. A study published in March conducted by Richard Jantz from the University of Tennessee, US, determined that bones found in 1940 on a remote Pacific island belonged to Earhart. Following the discovery, the world's memories of the legendary female pilot were brought back to life.
Earhart was born in 1897. When she was young, she was very interested in stories about women who were successful in male-dominated (男性为主的) professions, such as engineering and law. But in 1920, Earhart's life changed after her first experience of being a plane passenger. As soon as the plane left the ground, Earhart knew that she loved flying, so she found herself a teacher and started to learn how to fly for herself. To pay for the lessons and buy a plane of her own, she took all sorts of jobs.
In 1932, Earhart flew solo (独自地) across the Atlantic, becoming the first woman ever to do so. She also designed a flying suit for women and went on to design other clothes for women who led active lives. When she was nearly 40, Earhart was ready for a final challenge-to be the first woman to fly around the world. Her first attempt was unsuccessful but she tried again in 1937 with her navigator (领航员) Fred Noonan. But one month later, they disappeared in bad weather in mid-flight.
Even though it's still not clear how she ended up on the island, we're one step closer to finding the answer. And no matter what, Earhart will be forever remembered as a brave pioneer, both as a pilot and as a woman.
【1】What started Earhart's interest in flying?
A.Her parents' influence.
B.Her teachers' encouragement.

22、A wave. A thumbs-up. You may think you know what these common gestures signify…but what happens when you wave to your European friend across the street and she turns to walk the other way?
There’s a reason for her reaction.【1】While most Americans interpret a wave as a friendly greeting or goodbye, the same motion is just as likely to communicate the word “no” in parts of Europe and Latin America.
Obviously, body language is not universal.【2】
The most common understanding of the subject relates body language to spoken language. Generally speaking, the same body language has different meanings in different places, which is closely related to the traditional customs of the region.【3】For example, In Germany the thumbs-up represents the number one, but in Japan it means “five” instead. So to understand a certain body language correctly, it is best to combine it with spoken language.
There’s one more complication in understanding nonverbal (非语言的) communication, though.【4】In a study, participants from the West, African communities, and New Guinea were shown a collection of more than 10,000 portraits illustrating different facial expressions (the same man indicates different facial expressions, anger, sadness, etc.). Researchers concluded that there were at least seven universal facial expressions: anger, disgust, fear, surprise, happiness, sadness, and contempt.【5】
So while a wave or thumbs-up may not translate on your next trip abroad, a genuine expression of emotion probably will.
A.But why?
B.This is also true in different cultures.
C.The mixed messages don’t stop there.
D.It isn’t because your friend is tired of your company.
E.Indeed, signals are essential for effective communication.
F.90 percent of participants identified the same emotions in the photo.
G.Although body language isn’t universal, the emotions behind it may be.
23、If you are a sports fan, you would be watching the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. But if you are a basketball player like me, you would have been interested in NBA finals, won by the Toronto Raptors this year. It is the first time a Canadian Team or any team outside the United States, has won the NBA. The President of Toronto Raptors, Masai Ujiri, who led the team to make history, is from Nigeria.
During the half time break, if you were reading the cool and fashionable British Vogue magazine that features some of the trendiest fashions in the world, then it would be nice to know that the editor of it is Edward Enninful, born in Ghana.
After the Raptors game, you got into your stylish Tesla electric car, the world’s best known and bestselling commercially produced all electric car. But do you know the Tesla car made in California and shipped across the globe, was co-founded and led by a South African, Elon Musk, who was born in Pretoria. So, here are three very different people, from three unique backgrounds, who have impacted the entire world on a small, medium, and large scale.
When I was 10 years old, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia told me that if your dreams don’t scare you, then they are not big enough. So, I started my Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up project, to get girls into schools, and encourage them to dream big, speak loudly and clearly if they believe in something, and to stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves.
Mr Enninful, Mr Ujiri and Mr Musk are three examples of people, dreaming big, and walking tall. But I know they do not want to dream alone, or walk alone. They need more people to keep them company on their journey of transforming and impacting the world. They need you! After all, they are just like you, Africans from Ghana, South Africa and Nigeria So, join us! Dream On. Dream Big!
【1】Where did the winner of NBA come from before this year?

A.To lead the fashion trend in the world.
B.To keep more people company in the journey.
C.To speak loudly for girls in his own country.
D.To inspire more people to have big dreams.
【4】What is the author’s main purpose of writing the text?
A.To introduce three great persons.
B.To show Canadian’s winning in NBA.

D.To encourage more girls to get into schools.
24、Whether you’re interested in growing a small food garden at home, hydroponic(水栽法的)gardening provides a way to grow fresh, nutrient-rich food in a quickly-changing world with limited resources.
What is a hydroponic garden?
【1】 Plants can grow indoors, year round, in less space than traditional soil- based gardens in it. This means if you live in a tiny apartment or don’t have an outdoor area, you can still grow fresh food.
How does hydroponic gardening work?
Plants need sunlight, water and nutrients to grow. 【2】 But the basis of hydroponics is rooted in growing the food in nutrient-enriched water. A hydroponic system can be programmed to ensure a plant receives sufficient water, nutrients, light and even the correct PH level to provide each plant with what it needs to survive and thrive.
What plants can grow hydroponically?
A variety of different foods can be grown in a hydroponic garden. 【3】 Similar to what you can grow in a backyard hanging garden, the more popular vegetables grown in hydroponics include leafy greens and lettuces(生菜) . However, more complex systems can produce fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and more.
【4】
In addition to being able to grow food without soil and in small spaces, hydroponic gardening can contribute to solving social and environmental issues. In regions where people don’t have access to fresh vegetables, a hydroponic garden can be part of the solution. Hydroponic plants can grow 40% to 50% faster and produce 30% more than the plants growing in soil. 【5】 In some cases, you can grow produce that is even more nutrient.
A.Typically, plants get nutrients from soil.
B.What produce can a hydroponic garden offer?
C.What are the benefits of a hydroponic garden?
D.A hydroponic garden uses water instead of soil.
E.Microgreens are among the easiest plants to grow.
F.You can grow more produce in a shorter amount of time.
G.You can purchase a ready-to-go hydroponic garden or build your own.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day last June, I picked my son up from afterschool care to take him to the second of his twice-weekly boxing classes. He was tired and hungry and didn’t feel like going. “Can you drive me to the dam (大坝), Mom? I want to find something fun there,” he begged. The Colliery Dam is a pleasant attraction in our town. Beautiful big trees with birds calling, a freshwater reservoir (水库) filled with fish, and acres of paths to wander. But I insisted I had decided that it was important that he finish what he started, and that it was equally important to teach him that sometimes we have to do things even when we don’t feel like it.
Effectively, I was ignoring an eight-year-old’s request for some rest. He went to school five days a week, as well as before and afterschool care; he had a tutor once a week, two boxing classes and gymnastics on the weekend. However, I felt it justified in that he’s a very active boy and needs ways to get out all his energy.
But on this particular day, he was not going to let me ignore his feelings, however hard I tried. He even declared that he would never go to the boring boxing classes and instead take the painting courses he had been longing for. As usual, I rejected, claiming that’s an activity for girls. As we got in the hot car for a 15-minute drive to boxing, he returned to a three-year-old--he screamed and cried and kicked my seat.
We pulled into the parking lot, both of us worn out, annoyed and angry. My son took off his seat belt and curled (蜷缩) into a ball on the floor. What was I doing? Why was I so determined that he go to boxing? Was I worried that his absence would reflect badly on me as a parent somehow? Wouldn’t it actually teach him that I heard he was tired and hungry and needed a break and that it was just as well that boys took painting classes? “Put on your seat belt,” I said. “We’re going to the dam.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When we arrived at the dam, I noticed the tension disappear from both of our bodies.
