The story of Kit Kat the dog

The first time the rescuers met kit Kat, we recalled in shock and our hearts instantly went out to him. At his tender age, life had already dealt him so many harsh blows. Not only was he left to care for himself in the wild, but he also suffered pain with a horrific rash (皮疹).

Kit Kat was first brought to our attention by Anna, one of our volunteers. Kit Kat was said to be frightened of people and we eventually managed to put a leash (皮带) on Kit Kat and take him to the vet after a few days’ effort of tricking him with treats. He was well padded and his coat, though matted (无光泽的), was in good condition. Kit Kat also had good oral health.

Now on the mend, Kit Kat boasts a coat of soft, glossy fur and shows no signs of the pain he suffered from. While we have managed to heal his body, we have not been able to do the same for his broken spirit. However, we believe that with the right family and the right environment, Kit Kat will be able to flourish and shake off his sad past.

1Why were the rescuers shocked the first time they met Kit Kat?

A.He was a very old dog. B.He refused to be put on a leash.

C.He had a terrible skin condition. D.He was a wild and aggressive dog.

2The phrase “on the mend” tells us that Kit Kat ________.

C.is no longer scared of people D.has matured into an adult dog

C.teach dog owners how to be responsible pet owners

D.encourage the public to give up their pets for adoption

  • 22、Findings coming from a new report by the Pew Research Center of Washington D. C. show that Americans are worried about new technology. They are concerned that machines, including robots, will take over work now done by humans.

About 75 percent of Americans questioned by Pew said automation (自动化) will increase income inequality between the rich and the middle class and the poor. And 64 percent of people expect automation to be so common in America that people will face difficulty finding things to do with their lives.

Some of the concerns about technology come from a distrust about whether machines will always make the right decision. Many Americans believe humans have better judgment in dealing with complex matters. One example is selecting a person for a job. Three quarters of Americans said they would not want to apply for a job that uses a computer program to choose the most qualified person.

Most Americans want the government to limit automation. For example, 87 percent support a requirement that all driverless vehicles have a human in the driver’s seat, who can take control when needed. And 85 percent want to limit machines to mostly doing jobs that are dangerous or unhealthy for humans. And only 25 percent expect more jobs to come from automation. Pew said.

Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook, spoke last May to graduating seniors from Harvard University in Massachusetts. His talk centered on the uncertain future facing young people. “Our generation will have to deal with tens of millions of jobs replaced by automation like self-driving cars and trucks,” Zuckerberg told the graduates.

Zuckerberg said young people will have to find projects that will bring both jobs and direct benefits to the people of the world. He said in his speech that 300, 000 people worked to put a man on the moon, and millions of people built the Hoover Dam as well as other great projects over the last 100 years.

【1】What do Americans think of technology?

    A.Useful.

    B.Helpful.

    C.Effective.

    D.Undependable.

【2】Why do Americans want a human in driverless vehicles?

    A.To reduce the cost.

    B.To ensure safety.

    C.To test the new technology.

    D.To entertain the passengers.

【3】What did Zuckerberg encourage the students to do?

    A.Fight against robots.

    B.Consider large projects.

    C.Explore new job chances.

    D.Refuse self-driving vehicles.

【4】Which of the following can be the title of the text?

    A.New Technology Creates More Jobs

B.Americans Worry Robots Will Take Jobs

    C.New Technology Makes New Unfairness

D.Robots Make Work Easy to Do for Workers

  • 23、“A unique story of connection” is how South African filmmaker and naturalist Craig Foster refers to his underwater adventures with a wild common octopus documented in the film My Octopus Teacher.

The Netflix film shows the bond that develops between Foster and the eight-legged creature during a year of diving in a kelp forest in the Atlantic Ocean. It won this year’s Academy Award and British Academy Film and Television Arts Award for best documentary.

My Octopus Teacher has captured hearts worldwide because few of the many wonderful natural-history films are about a human’s relationship with the wild. “I think people around the world are longing to have some kind of real connection with the natural world, and this film speaks to that need,” Foster said.

He said he had many such experiences with nature, like having a fish swim into his hand or an otter swim with him and reach out and touch him. Still, he said, these strong bonds weren’t easily created often requiring years of tireless efforts. And he said he learned many lessons from the San masters, native people of South Africa’s Kalahari region. “They taught me to track on land and to look for signs. I applied those same lessons to looking in the water,” he said, “Tracking involves knowing the animals well and recognizing their behavior and movements.”

Observing his special octopus, part of a species known for its intelligence, has been a life-changing experience for Foster. One of the most remarkable moments was when the creature that initially hid in cracks allowed him to join her on a hunting expedition. How does Foster account for this? “When the same animal interacts with you every day over a long period of time, you can assume that there is trust involved.”

Foster said he learned that you can’t force this trust. “Everything must happen at the animal’s pace, comfort and convenience. In their eyes, we are big and aggressive, posing a threat to them. They make themselves vulnerable in allowing us into their space because trusting the wrong human could mean death. So it’s an immense privilege when they show trust.”

【1】Why is My Octopus Teacher well-received?

A.It shows adventures with a wild octopus.

B.It meets the need of natural-history films.

C.It has won many awards for best documentary.

D.It features a bond between man and nature.

【2】Which words can best describe Foster from his experiences?

    A.Talented and ambitious.

    B.Patient and persevering.

    C.Adventurous and stubborn.

    D.Professional and trustworthy.

【3】What can we learn from paragraph 5?

A.The octopus took Foster as a friend.

B.The octopus was curious about Foster.

    C.The octopus had human-like intelligence.

D.The octopus enjoyed inviting Foster to hunt.

【4】Which can best replace the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 6?

    A.Easily hurt.

    B.Well protected.

    C.Very accessible.

    D.Extremely aggressive.

  • 24、Scientists have identified the order of the gene of the giraffe for the first time to help explain how the tallest animals on earth developed their remarkably long necks.

Being a giraffe is not easy. To pump blood two meters up from the chest to the brain calls for a powerful heart and twice the blood pressure of other mammals. Giraffes also need special safety system to let them bend down for a drink and raise their heads again without feeling Dizzy.

The animals* unique body structure has long been a puzzle for biologists, including Charles Darwin. Now, by comparing the gene of the giraffe with its closest relative, the short-necked okapi, scientists have solved part of the puzzle by studying changes in a small number of genes responsible both for regulating body shape and circulation. This suggests that the development of a long neck and a powerful heart went hand in hand, driven by a relatively small number of genetic changes.

The interpretation of the genetic factors behind the giraffe's remarkable heart system could also be instructive for human health, since the animals appear to avoid the kind of organ damage often found in people with high blood pressure.

The more fundamental question of why giraffes developed their long necks remains open, however. The apparently self-evident idea that it was to reach ever-higher food supplies has been challenged in the past 20 years by a competing belief that it is actually due to competition among fighting males for females.

Unlike long-necked birds, which have additional vertebrae (椎骨),giraffes have the same seven vertebrae found in all mammals, although theirs are greatly extended.

1A strong heart is very important for a giraffe because it .

    A. keeps the giraffe safe in different environments.

    B. pumps blood to the brain high above its body.

    C. helps the giraffe find a drink at lower places.

    D. keeps the blood pressure at a normal level.

2Scientists compare the gene of the giraffe and the short-necked okapi because the latter .

    A. has a quite special body structure.   B. has gone through few genetic changes.

    C. is a puzzle worth further study.   D. is in the same family as the giraffe.

3Which possibly caused the giraffe to develop a long neck?

    A. Its attempts to attract females.   B. Its favorite food at high places.

    C. Its need to avoid organ damage.   D. Its greatly-extended vertebrae.

4What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

    A. To describe giraffes body structure.   B. To explain genetic changes in animals.

    C. To introduce a new finding of science.   D. To challenge a belief of twenty years.
