二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk of becoming nearsighted, new research suggests.

In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 schoolchildren. The scientists found that the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors over three years were 23 percent less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed to spend more time outdoors. Moreover, among the kids who did become nearsighted during the study, the degree to which their eyesight worsened was slightly smaller among those who spent more time outdoors.

The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also encouraged to engage their children in outdoor activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other half of the children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30.4 percent of the kids in the intervention(干预) group had become nearsighted, compared with 38.5 percent of the kids in the other group.

It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children’s eyesight, the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine(多巴胺) of the eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain(抑制) the type of growth in the eye that is associated with nearsightedness.

Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However, it’s important to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging.

1What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day?

    A. Attend an extra class of outdoor activities.

    B. Continue to do their usual activities.

    C. Spend one hour in doing eye exercises.

    D. Participate in outdoor activities with parents.

2What can be inferred about the chemical dopamine?

    A. It can contribute to poor sight.

    B. It can damage people’s brain.

    C. It is beneficial to eyesight.

    D. It means low levels of light intensity.

3What may be discussed in the following paragraph?

    A. How to design outdoor activities for kids.

    B. How to prevent kids becoming nearsighted.

    C. How to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light.

    D. How to encourage kids to join in outdoor activities.

4Which can serve as the best title for the passage?

    A. The More Time Outdoors, the Better

    B. Kids May See Better if They Play Outside

    C. It’s Time to Engage Kids in Outdoor Activities

    D. Researchers Found a Cure for Nearsightedness

  • 22、A lot of people are afraid spiders(蜘蛛)even the small ones. But a big tarantula(鸟蛛)is much more terrifying for many. Now, scientists in Sri Lanka have discovered a huge species of tarantula thats about the size of a persons face.

The first part of the spiders scientific name, Poecilotheria rajaei, comes from the Greek words for spotted(poikilos) and wild beast (therion). Its species name, rajaei, comes from a local police officer who helped the team that discovered the creature. Poecilotheria rajaei has 8-inch long legs, and unusual spots colored gray, pink, and yellow.

Although it is very big, is there a real reason to be afraid of one? Maybe. This tarantula has enough poisonous fluid(毒液)to kill mice and small birds and snakes but its bite wouldnt cause the death of most humans.

Poecilotheria rajaei was first seen in 2009, when a villager in Sri Lanka found the body of a male and brought it to Ranil Nanayakkara, co-founder of Sri Lankas Biodiversity Education and Research organization.

An examination of the awesome creature proved that it was a type of tarantula scientists hadnt seen before. So Nanayakkara carefully looked through the Sri Lankan forests to try to find more of the spiders.

Its still too early to know whether this species is endangered. But researchers fear that the tarantulas natural habitat is slowly being destroyed.

They prefer old trees, but due to the widespread removal of trees the number has dropped, Nanayakkara said in an interview.

Tarantulas have eight legs and two body parts. They are different from insects, which have only six legs but three body parts. Tarantulas have hairy bodies and are usually larger than other types of spiders. Some species of tarantulas can live up to 25 years.

While Poecilotheria rajaei is very big, the largest tarantula is the Goliath bird-eater (Theraphosa blondi). Found in the rainforests of South America, its legs can be up to 10 inches long. But dont worry if you ever see one: Its poisonous fluid isnt really dangerous to humans.

1According to the text, Poecilotheria rajaei _______.

    A. has unique spots

    B. is mostly yellow

    C. has 10-inch long legs

    D. was first seen by the Greeks

    A. A little girl

    B. A small bird.

    C. A big mouse.

    D. A small snake.

3The number of Poecilotheria rajaei has dropped because___________.

    A. the global climate has changed

    B. they have too many natural enemies

    C. some people are killing them illegally

    D. more and more forests are disappearing

4Which of the following is TRUE about tarantulas?

    A. They are a kind of insect.

    B. Most of them live in South America.

    C. Their body is divided into three parts.

    D. They are usually of bigger size than other spiders.

5Which section of a newspaper is the text most probably taken from?

    A. Life   B. Nature

    C. Science   D. Business

  • 23、People representing over 100 countries met virtually in Kunming, China, last week to discuss how to protect Earth’s biodiversity(生物多样性). This CBD Meeting(also known as COP15)ran from October 11 to 15, 2021.

There are so many different species. Sadly, species are disappearing all the time. One recent study suggested that around a million species are in danger of extinction. Like the climate crisis, the world’s loss of biodiversity is caused mainly by humans, who don’t always cooperate. Climate change is playing a part. The biggest way humans are causing biodiversity loss is by taking over the homes that all kinds of plants and animals depend on and using them for things like farming, mining, or cutting down trees for wood. Humans are also harming the oceans by fishing too much, and by severely polluting the seas with plastic, oil, and other chemicals.

In 1992, the world’s countries began signing an agreement called the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The meeting is being held in two parts. Last week's meeting discussed plans and goals for protecting biodiversity through the year 2030, which led to a plan called the “Kunming Declaration”. An in-person meeting will be held in Kunming next May to formally agree to the plan. One of its big goals announced in Kunming is to cut dangerous chemical pollution from farming. The plan also includes asking governments to cut up to $500 billion of their support for activities that hurt biodiversity, like some methods of farming, and producing fossil fuels.

CBD organizers hope the world's countries are really ready to work on biodiversity problems this time. In 2010, over 100 countries agreed to a 20-Part Plan to protect biodiversity by 2020. But none of the plan's 20 goals had been consummated by 2020. Solving the problem doesn't depend on what countries say they'll do. It depends on what they actually do.

【1】What mainly leads to the world's biodiversity loss?

    A.The disappearance of wild areas.

    B.Worldwide climate change.

    C.The serious ocean pollution.

    D.Lack of international cooperation.

【2】What do we know about the “Kunming Declaration”?

A.It belongs to the 1992 CBD agreement.

B.It’ll raise $500 billion to protect nature.

    C.It advises stopping using chemicals.

D.It’ll be approved officially in 2022.

【3】What does the underlined word “consummated” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Explained

    B.Ignored.

    C.Reached.

    D.Assessed.

    【4】What’s the text mainly about?

    A.The new trend of biodiversity.

    B.The Kunming CBD Meeting.

    C.The challenges living things face.

D.The different species on the Earth.

  • 24、   There are one to two billion mothers around the world caring for children and other people every day of the year. Hopefully they feel appreciated every day, but Mother's Day is a good yearly reminder to say thanks to the mums and other special carers who help us be our best.

In the US, the first modern Mother's Day was in 1908 and was the idea of Anna Jarvis the daughter of one of the earlier anti-war campaigners. The white carnation (康乃馨)---often regarded as the flower symbol of Mother's Day—was the favourite flower of Ms Jarvis's mother, Ann Jarvis, who had nursed soldiers in the Civil War. The US President Woodrow Wilson announced the second Sunday in May of 1914 to be America's first official Mother's Day.

Australia first officially celebrated Mother's Day in 1924. Sydney woman Janet Heyden began the tradition because she wanted to help the lonely, elderly mothers at a hospital she visited. Ms Heyden asked schools and businesses to contribute gifts to the women at the hospital , many of whom had lost their husbands and sons in World War I or had never been wives or mothers because of the war. Mother's Day in Australia is the second Sunday of May. It's not an official holiday but many families have their own traditions of visiting or calling their mothers? giving gifts or going out for lunch together.

There are many different dates for modern mother's days around the world. Most Arab countries celebrate on March 21. Russia celebrates on International Women's Day on March 8. In Thailand, the day is celebrated in August on Queen Sirikit's birthday.

1What does the author think of Mother's Day?

B.To remind people to visit or call one's own mothers.

C.To remind people to give the white carnation to mothers.

D.To help the suffering women in hospital.

4What can we learn about today's Mother's Day from the text?

A.It is not an official festival in the US.

B.It will be an international festival soon.

C.It is rooted in wars in the US and Australia.

D.It is celebrated at the same date in Arab and western countries.
