21、About 20 years ago, Daniel Hoffman, a classically trained violinist met a young musician playing in the town square in Marrakech, an ancient city in Morocco. They communicated in the little French they both knew, but their main common language was music. On the back of a motorbike of the fellow violinist, Hoffman weaved through the back streets of the city and then learned his first lessons in Andalusian music, the classical music of North Africa.
That experience gave birth to an idea: What would it be like to try to learn how to play different violin styles around the world in just one week? Oh. yes, and at the end of that week, play a concert. He even got a name for the concept “musical extreme sports”.
It took him almost two decades to launch that dream with a friend, who introduced him to the wonders of Kickstarter, a funding platform for creative projects. Up to now, the dream has taken the form of a new documentary currently airing on American public television stations called “Otherwise, It’s Just Firewood.”
In the documentary, Hoffman travels to County Clare, Ireland, where he takes lessons with James Kelly, a master Irish violin player, for less than a week and then performs together with him in front of an audience, many of whom are star Irish musicians.
The film is what Hoffman hopes will be the first of an eventual series of short documentaries, showing him learning to play the violin in a variety of styles, including the folk music of south India, Sweden, Greece, Romania, and West Virginia.
That would add to his extensive repertoire (全部曲目), which already includes Balkan, Middle Eastern, and Turkish styles. “The big joke is what’s the difference between the fiddle and the violin? It’s the person who plays it,” says Niall Keegan, a traditional flute player. “It’s the music you make on it that makes it Irish or English or French or classical or jazz or whatever else. It’s how we imagine it and how we create through it that make it and give it character.”
“Otherwise, it’s just firewood,” he says, words that became the film’s title.

22、There is no way they just drove into that water, thought Corion Evans. The 16-year-old was hanging out with friends in a parking area underneath a Moss Point, highway in July when a car with three teenage girls inside fell into the Pascagoula River. It came to rest some 20 feet from land, then sank. The driver, Evans would learn, had blindly followed wrong directions from her GPS.
It was around 2:30 a. m. by the time Evans and brothers Karon and Caleh Bradley got to the river’s edge. In the darkness, they could barely make out the girls clinging to the roof, the only part of the car still, barely, above water. But they could hear screaming.
Evans took off his shirt and shoes, put his phone down, and then dived into the water, a river he knew alligators (鳄鱼) called home. He helped the first girl he saw and, keeping her head above water, led her ashore.
Just then, a man called out. Police Officer Garry Mercer had arrived. He dived into the river to help another of the girls. But halfway back to shore she panicked and went underwater, pulling Mercer down with her. Evans jumped back into the water and helped them until they could stand. “If he hadn’t been there, who knows?” Mercer told the Washington Post.
There was still one girl in the water. Cora Watson, 19, could not swim. She was gulping water, struggling to stay afloat. And scared.
“I heard Watson screaming ‘Help! And I thought she was done,” Caleh told WLOX in Biloxi.
“I just knew my last breath was coming,” Watson said. “My mind said, You’re slowly losing yourself.” She began to go under. Then, a surprise. “Corion had grabbed me.”
All of them were taken to the hospital and released. They’re alive because Corion Evans risked his life to save them. They’re alive, says his mother, Marquita Evans, because Corion Evans broke his curfew (宵禁). But she’s not mad, she told the Post, “He had a good reason.”

23、Generally speaking, government regulations normally ban anything from smoking in public places to parking in certain zones. But officials in the Brazilian town of Biritiba Mirim, 70km (45miles) east of Sao Paulo,_____________They plan to prohibit residents from dying early because the local cemetery(墓地) has reached full capacity.
There’s no more room to bury the dead, they can’t be cremated(火化) and laws forbid a new cemetery. So the mayor has proposed a strange solution: outlaw death. Mayor Roberto Pereira says the bill is meant as a protest against federal regulations that prohibit new or expanded cemeteries in preservation areas. “They have not taken local demands into consideration”, he claims.
A 2003 decree(法令) by Brazil’s National Environment Council forbids burial grounds in protected areas. Mr. Pereira wants to build a new cemetery, but the project has been stopped because 98% of Biritiba Mirim is considered as a preservation area.
Biritiba Mirim, a town of 28,000 inhabitants, not only wants to prohibit residents from passing away. The bill also calls on people to take care of their health in order to avoid death. “I haven’t got a job, nor am I healthy. And now they say I can’t die. That’s ridiculous,” Amarido do Prado, an unemployed resident said.
The city council is expected to vote on the regulation next week. “Of course the bill is laughable, illegal, and will never be approved,” said Gilson Soares de Campos, an assistant of the mayor. “But can you think of a better resolution to persuade the government to change the environmental decree that is prohibiting us from building a new cemetery?” The bill states that “offenders will be held responsible for their acts.” However, it does not say what the punishment will be.
【1】What is the bill to be proposed by the officials in Biritiba Mirim?
A. Ban on building a new cemetery.
B. Ban on parking in certain zones.
C. Forbidding buried grounds in preservation.
D. Prohibiting residents from dying early.
【2】What can we infer from the phrase “have gone far beyond that” in the first paragraph?
A. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have made these regulations.
B. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have been to many places around the world.
C. The bill to be proposed by officials in Biritiba Mirim is much too unexpected.
D. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have built too many cemeteries in their town.
【3】What’s the attitude of the mayor of Biritiba Mirim towards the federal regulations?
A. He remains silent about them.
B. He gives strong backing to them.
C. He objects to them.
D. He asks the residents for advice on them.
【4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. The mayor of the town wants to build a new cemetery against federal regulation.
B. The residents of the town sing high praise for the bill.
C. No better resolution of the problems has been thought out.
D. The government is going to change the environmental decree.
24、Synthetic voices (合成语音) are everywhere. They feed us directions in the morning, guide us through phone calls by day and broadcast the news on smart speakers at night. And as the technology used to make them improves, these voices are becoming more and more human-sounding. This is the final frontier in synthetic speech: copying not just what we say exactly but how we say it.
Rupal Patel heads a research group at Northeastern University that studies speech prosody (韵律)—the changes in pitch, loudness and duration that we use to convey intention and emotion through voice. "Sometimes people think of it as the icing (糖霜) on the cake," she explains. "You have the message, and I really think it's the scaffolding (脚手架) that gives meaning to the message itself."
Patel says she grew interested in prosody after finding it was the only element of vocal communication that seemed to be available to people with some kinds of severe speech disorders. These patients were able to make expressive sounds even if they could not speak clearly. In 2014 Patel founded a company to create custom synthetic voices for nonspeaking individuals. VocaliD has since expanded to commercial brands and influencers.
Synthetic speech has come a long way over the years. People have been trying to synthesize speech since at least the 18th century, when an Austro-Hungarian inventor built a rough copy of the human vocal tract (声道) that could pronounce entire phrases clearly.
Current machine-learning techniques can model human speech, and complete with awkward pauses and sounds made by lips. Still, training on thousands of samples per second is prohibitively expensive for most real-world systems. Researchers, including those at VocaliD, are continually employing newer and more efficient methods. But even as the remaining gaps between human and synthetic speech are steadily closing, truly lifelike prosody continues to fail to meet the requirement of even the most complicated systems. Maybe what's still missing requires machines not only to imitate humans but also to feel like us.
【1】What is the challenge for current synthetic voices?
A.Recognizing speakers.
B.Saving human speech.
C.Conveying intention and emotion.
D.Getting speakers to become smarter.
【2】Why did Rupal Patel set up VocaliD?
A.To help patients to make expressive sounds.
B.To expand his commercial brands and influence.

【3】What can be inferred about synthetic speech?
A.It exactly equals human speech.
B.It is on the way to being perfect.
C.It can bridge gaps between people.
D.It contains more beautiful prosody.

A.Synthetic Voices Will Replace Human Speech
B.VocaliD Has Found a Cure for Speech Disorders
C.Machines Teach People to Communicate Well
D.Artificial Intelligence Is Good at Sounding Human
