二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   If you asked me to dance, I’d probably freeze on the spot and some people say I have two left feet! But with some persuasion and Dutch courage I can be tempted to take to the dance floor and shake some moves-and that, apparently, is only natural.

Experts have found as well as being fun, dancing might have helped us to survive as a species. Evolutionary anthropologist(人类学家) Bronwyn Tarr from the University of Oxford believes that dancing alone is one thing but it’s dancing as a group that makes our brain reward us with a cocktail of feel-good hormones that change how we feel about ourselves and those around us. This is likely to lead to profound social effects. It’s keeping paces with others that makes us happy. Bronwy Tarr says that “dancing fosters social closeness between people. It helps us build social connections and communities. In our past, those social connections would have been critical for surviving.”

Dance is also a good way to keep fit and improve our mental health. In Wales there have been calls for doctors to prescribe dance classes to people who are unwell. The Arts Council of Wales claims there are many health benefits. And Bronwyn Tarr says “more and more we’re actually discovering that your longevity(长寿)-your life expectancy-is predicted by the social connections that you have…still today it’s something we should do more of.”

It could be part of being a conservative Englishman that makes me a reluctant dancer. Look at other nationalities such as Cubans where dancing is at the heart of their cultural identity. And in Brazil at Carnival time, people let their hair down by dancing together day and night. They seem to be having a good time-so maybe I should get on my feet and dance!

1What does the author imply in the first paragraph?

A.He doesn’t like dances. B.He does not dance well.

C.He lacks confidence in dance. D.He does everything out of nature.

2What can be inferred from Tarr’s words in Paragraph 2?

A.Dancing alone doesn’t benefit at all.

B.Dancing with others helps people survive.

C.It is funny to keep paces with other people.

D.It matters most to dance on social occasions.

3How does the author feel about dancing in the last paragraph?

    A.Positive. B.Negative.

    C.Unclear. D.Objective.

4Which is the best title for the text?

A.What makes you a real dancer? B.What can dances bring us?

C.Why do people love to dance? D.How can we dance well?

  • 22、   A group of volunteers joined forces to form a human chain to free four dolphins which had been stranded (搁浅) in a canal for four days. The four dolphins were seen in the water near the Fossil Park neighborhood in St Petersburg, Florida, US, on Sunday. Experts from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) had monitored the dolphins' activities in the past few days and hoped that they would swim out with the tide.

But when the dolphins struggled to leave the canal, the brave volunteers joined members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to form a rescue team to free them. Dozens of people gathered to take videos and pictures of the kind act. A team of 14 volunteers held hands to act as a block to guide the dolphins out of the narrow channel. They shouted and patted the water with their hands to direct the dolphins to vast expanses of Riviera Bay. Dolphins find their way in the water through echolocation(回声定位). That means that, by making high-frequency sounds, they can recognize the echoes of sound waves that bounce off objects to find their way around.

Andy Garrett, a biologist of the FWC said, "We were able to keep that chain together. The dolphins were interested. They actually came over right away." He added that when the team reached a bridge, the dolphins appeared a bit nervous and started doing some spins. "They made one real hard pass at our team and then went under the bridge and took off," Garrett said. The operation lasted about 45 minutes and the rescue team did not use nets or any items that could stress the dolphins.

1What can we know about the dolphins from paragraph l?

A.They formed a chain to protect themselves.

B.They lived in the water near the Fossil Park.

C.They were observed in secret by volunteers.

D.They were forced to stay in a canal for four days.

A.To make sounds to attract some people.

B.To guide the dolphins out to Riviera Bay.

C.To celebrate the success of saving dolphins.

D.To test the different reactions of the dolphins.

3What words could best describe the rescuers?

    A.Brave and caring.

    B.Cautious and humorous.

    C.Smart and ambitious.

    D.Optimistic and energetic.

4What's the main idea of the text?

A.Dolphins swam to the canal to hunt for food.

B.Rescuers formed a human chain to save dolphins.

C.Volunteers helped four dolphins find their way home.

D.Experts studied the ways of dolphins' finding directions.

  • 23、The secret language of happiness

Talking of happiness, there are many different types, such as a contented glow while enjoying a favourite TV programme, or a burst of joy at seeing an old friend. And learning what these are can help us appreciate our positive feelings all the more. But sometimes we can’t find a suitable English word to describe it. The following can help you speak happy typically.

    Take time for meals: SOBREMESA

This Spanish term literally means “on the table’’ describing the tradition of sitting with family or friends at mealtimes. Besides consuming food together, this practice involves connecting with one another, particularly once the meal is over. These are precious opportunities to make memories and spend time with others.

    Find a hobby: MERAKI

What do you love to do? Which activities light up your week and enliven your life? Whatever your personal inclinations, these passions are perfectly captured by the Greek word meraki, which translates as “the care and love someone has for what he/ she does”.

The emotion of meraki occurs when you are completely absorbed in a hobby or activity, and feel love for what you are doing.

    Be kind: UBUNTU

The term ubuntu is a contraction of the Zulu phrase “umuntu ngumunti ngabantu”, which means “a person is a person through other people”. This concept provides some explanation for the importance of kindness, as ubuntu highlights our interrelatedness as people.

If we can think of our fellow humans in this way, we will automatically treat them with kindness.

    Find purpose: ARETE

This Greek word means to fulfill our purpose and potential. We all have our unique interests, values and skills, and we must try to excel in them, as this helps us to improve.

Arete does not necessarily mean attaining excellence. It just means doing your best.

【1】Which term is suitable to describe your happy time with friends after dinner?

    A.Arete.

    B.Ubuntu.

    C.Meraki.

    D.Sobremesa.

【2】What does the Greek word “arete” exactly mean?

    A.Fulfilling purpose and potential perfectly.

B.Having our own interests, values and skills.

C.Sparing no efforts to achieve our final goal.

    D.Whatever difficulties we should overcome.

【3】What do the listed words have in common?

A.They are to help express gladness.

B.They come from the same culture.

    C.They help highlight one’s experience.

D.They have exactly the same meaning.

  • 24、Dear Editor,

Recent reports have indicated an additional 1, 400 Marines海军陆战队are being sent to Afghanistan in the coming weeks. This means it costs over $1 million annually on the ground over there. I do place a higher level of blame on the policymakers who send soldiers off to kill and be killed in the field. I think the human race needs to think more about killing.

One needs to do the introspection: “Are these wars JUST?” I believe that all of our wars since 1945 have been illegal, under international law as well. I suggest that all your readers examine their conscience良心as it relates to the matter of making war. The fact that many soldiers are motivated by a strong sense of duty does not give them some unqualified moral right to support these wars or any other. It’s responsible for all the troops, and the entire population, to determine whether the Afghan or Iraq wars are in accordance with (符合)the development of the state.

I wish someone would give me one or more logical reasons why we are still fighting in Afghanistan and what our goals are. I certainly don’t understand it and neither do many who are more knowledgeable than I.

Outsiders have tried unsuccessfully for centuries to conquer Afghanistan, and we seem to be no more successful. We are trying to develop a stable central government, but the country is badly divided into ethnic and tribal groups, and the current government is corrupt腐败的. Moreover, we are apparently regarded as undesirable occupiers by many of its people, most notably the Taliban.(塔利班)

If we are to continue spending billions every year in Afghanistan and killing hundreds of our people and many of theirs, our government must provide us with a reasonable explanation of why we are doing so and what we can expect to accomplish.

    George Myers

【1】What caused the author to write the letter?

A.His conscience of being a citizen.

B.Reports about sending soldiers to Afghanistan.

C.His relatives being killed in the war.

    D.Getting no reasonable explanation.

2The underlined word “introspection” in the passage means   .

    A.self-awareness B.self-confidence

    C.self-examination   D.self-defence

3The soldiers go to Afghanistan because   .

A.they can contribute to the development of America

B.they have the moral right to do so

C.they are performing their duty as a resident

D.they want to become heroes in the war

4Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Most people cant understand why the States makes wars.

B.The U.S.A has developed a stable central government.

C.The Afghan considered Americans as undesirable occupiers

D.American government should make an explanation to the public.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions:Read the following passage.Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60 words.Use your own words as far as possible.

Read the world in 193 books

I used to think of myself as a person learned in books, but my bookshelves told a different story. Apart from a few Indian novels and an Australian book,my literature collection only consisted of British and American titles. Worse still,I hardly ever read anything in translation. My reading is limited to stories by English-speaking authors.

So,at the start of 2020,I set myself the challenge of trying to read a book from every country of all 193 UN-recognized states in a year. I created a blog called A Year of Reading the World and put out an appeal for suggestions of titles that I could read in English. The response was amazing. Before I knew it,people all over the planet were getting in touch with ideas and offers of help. Some posted me books from their home countries.Others did hours of research on my behalf. In addition, several writers, like Turkmenistan's AkWelsapar and Panama's Juan David Morgan, sent me unpublished translations of their novels, giving me a rare opportunity to read works unavailable in Britain. Even with such an extraordinary team behind me,however, sourcing books was no easy task.

But the effort was worth it. As I made my way through the planet's literary landscapes, extraordinary things started to happen. Far from simply armchair travelling,I found I was inhabiting the mental space of the storytellers. I discovered, book packing offered something that a physical traveler could hope to experience only rarely: it took me inside the thoughts of individuals living far away and showed me the world through their eyes. More powerful than a thousand news reports, these stories not only opened my mind to basic information of life in other places, but opened my heart to the way people there might feel. And that in turn changed my thinking.

One by one, the books from the countries on the list that had begun as an intellectual exercise filled my heart with laughter, love, anger, hope and fear. Lands that had once seemed exotic and remote became close and familiar to me. At its best,I learned, fiction makes the world real.
