21、I am always nervous when I get an email from my parents with "FYI(For Your Information)". My parents are in their late 70s, and while they are quite healthy for their ages, I worry about what messages they are going to give me.
I got such an email in September from my father. He sent an email from my cousin who told that her father, my uncle Reese, had passed away. The news made my mind go blank though I have met him less than a dozen times in my life, because Reese was the first of my parent’s siblings(兄弟姐妹) to die, and I was simply not ready for that.
The memorial service was set in Florida, and I quickly decided I needed to go. I needed to be there for my father, and I needed to go for myself. Reese is about nine years older than my father, and I started to do the math in my head. I know that doesn’t make sense, but I will do anything to reason that I still have a lot of time before I am in my cousin’s shoes.
Reese’s memorial service was small with only family and perhaps a dozen of his friends. The funeral was attended by an even smaller number, and then, the family gathered at a nearby bar to look at old photographs found among Reese’ possessions.
As we drove back to the Orlando International Airport, I thought about how I am not sure what my parents want, not only in their memorial services, but also how they want to be remembered and where they want to be laid to rest. These are going to be difficult conversations, but I know I need to have them. Maybe not right now, but we do need to open the discussion at some point. It may feel too early, but I trust my parents will know that when adult children raise these questions, we do it out of love to honor their lives and their wishes.

22、Do companies need a strong leader to stay competitive? Many would say “yes, definitely”, but the employees of one Swedish software consultancy company would tell them otherwise. They don’t have a CEO. Nobody tells anyone what to do, instead, all the 40 employees have meetings and decide together.
Crisp has become world famous for not having a boss. Hoping to get its employees more involved, it moved on to change its chief executive officer (CEO) annually, but ultimately, the 40-strong staff decided to scrap the position altogether.
Well, it turns out that not having a boss, and being involved in decision making has made Crisp’s 40 employees more responsible and motivated. And even if someone does make a bad call at some point, it’s definitely not the end of the world.
According to the BBC, the unique Swedish company is apparently set up more like a family – nobody tells anyone what to do, but the unspoken understanding is that “you don’t mess up the house”.
Crisp does hold four-day meetings for the whole staff two or three times a year, when they decide on things that affect everyone, like changing their headquarters, but generally, company employees are encouraged to make their own decisions. They also have a company board, a legal requirement in Sweden, which acts as a last resort, in case something goes horribly wrong.
So far, the “no CEO” experiment has gone surprisingly well. Henrik Kniberg, an organizational coach at Crisp, claims that not having to ask the boss to approve project decisions or budgets means that things happen a lot faster and the company can respond to clients quicker.
However, Kniberg stresses that not having to ask the CEO’s permission about stuff doesn’t remove employees’ responsibility to consult with their colleagues and explain their decisions. However, some CEOs believe that the idea only works in small startups, because it would be too chaotic(混乱的)in large organizations.

【4】Which factor may NOT contribute to a company’s success according to the text?

24、While doing some grocery shopping one day, I realized I had spent close to 30 minutes just in the produce section, meticulously(一丝不苟地) choosing the best-looking apples, bananas that were ripe but not spotted and ears of corn with perfectly neat rows of kernels(谷粒). However, I bet I'm not the only one that rejects the slightest imperfections in fruits and vegetables.
I've also seen how my pursuit of perfect produce has influenced my children. When I pack their lunches, I make sure I include fleshy tomatoes, crisp blueberries, and cucumbers without any scratches. But one day when my daughter refused to eat a pear that was turning slightly brown, I knew I had to change my way. I realized I was unconsciously teaching my children to accept society's standards of perfection and that these perceptions could have a disastrous impact on our environment.
In the US, up to 40 percent of food is wasted every year. Around 20 percent of food waste is produced directly at the farm, for the so-called "ugly" food may not meet certain standards set by grocery stores, though the food is still perfectly consumable.
On a recent night, I attended a dinner party to raise awareness about this growing problem. It was the brainchild of food waste activist Josh Treuhaft, which was an intimate gathering of 16 people dining on a table made from recycled wood. The chef, Pesha Perlsweig, prepared a six-course meal with food, which was purchased from Imperfect Produce that specifically sells "ugly" fruit and vegetables. The organic twisted carrots or knobbly(多疙瘩的) sweet potatoes can be bought at this market for 30 to 50 percent of the price.
I was impressed by Perlsweig's creative, delicious dishes made from the "ugly" food. Before each dish, Perlsweig offered guests tips on how we can reduce our food waste. After the evening's dinner, I became inspired to rethink the way I shopped for and consumed food, and to accept the imperfect. Though looking ugly, the food contains no less nutrition than normal food. Furthermore, it's cheap at the price. My actions inspired my daughter to think differently as well. I'm hoping that these small changes in our perception can make a big difference to our world.

【3】Which of the following is NOT the reason why the author accepted the imperfect food?

B.It is cheap and as nutritious as perfect food.
C.It can always help to protect the environment.
