  • 21、Skipping stones to Donate Books for Low-income Schools and Libraries

Are you working with students from low-income families or communities of color? Are you in a school or library that needs more books? We have many books that we wish to donate to schools and public libraries serving low-income students or communities of color. We have nature books as well as books on cultural awareness and diversity. In terms of ages or readership levels, we have novels for teenagers, chapter books, picture books, and a few reference books.

Skipping Stones invites you to write to us about students you serve, as well as your needs and wants in terms of books. We want to donate these books to your public school or library but we request that you cover the shipping costs. We think $50 or $100 will adequately cover the shipping of about 50 to 100 books, respectively. $200 will bring you four big boxes of about 200 to 250 books. This is just an estimate. We are happy to work with you.

Please note that we are NOT able to fulfill donation requests from overseas schools or libraries because of the high cost of airmail postage. Within the USA, we can use the cheaper MEDIA MAIL or LIBRARY RATE. Send your requests to info@skippingstones. org or by snail mail to:

  • 22、The virus “Ebola” is named after the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That’s where the virus was discovered in 1976. A person can only get Ebola through direct contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids, for example, sweat or spit. Additionally, the virus can get into your body through your eyes and mouth if those areas come into contact with something that contains the bodily fluids of an infected person. That’s why health care workers are supposed to keep themselves completely covered while treating patients.

The deadliest Ebola outbreak is spreading fast in Western Africa, taking over 900 lives so far. The health systems in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia are severely lacking in resources, and health care workers may not have access to adequate protective clothing when working in rural clinics, where the proper protections are lacking. Since Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia share a border; it’s easier for people to move from one country to another, increasing the risk for disease spread.

For now, all doctors can do is treat the symptoms and provide supportive care like monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing while making sure the patients’ fluids are supplied. Sometimes patients are given antibiotics(抗生素) to treat other possible infections. The hope is to make the patient pull through the infection so their immune system can eventually clear the virus. The people who survive Ebola have created enough antibodies to kill it.

There are several promising drugs and vaccines in development, but since Ebola is less common—and research about it is not well funded there is no drug or vaccine that has been approved for use in humans. Many of the other drugs and vaccines have not yet been tested in humans. The WHO (World Health Organization) is meeting next week to discuss whether experimental treatments should be used during this outbreak.

1According to the passage, Ebola only spreads through _________.

    A. patients’ sweat B. bodily fluids

    C. people’s spit   D. your body

【2Which is the possible reason why Ebola spreads in West Africa quickly?

    A. The Ebola river is polluted by the virus.

    B. There aren’t any protections.

    C. The protective clothing is adequate.

    D. Three western countries share a border.

【3Why have there been no cures used for Ebola in humans so far?

    A. There are not enough drugs for the infected people.

    B. Ebola is rare and its research money is lacking.

    C. The people have enough antibodies to kill Ebola.

    D. The WHO has decided not to use them.

【4Which of the following can be the best title?

    A. The Prevention from Ebola.

    B. No Cure for the Virus “Ebola”.

    C. The Deadliest Ebola in Africa.

    D. Introduction to the Virus “Ebola”.

  • 23、   Electric cars are getting cheaper and their sales are on the rise, but their future success may depend on abandoning a key ingredient: the heavy metal cobalt (). The mineral is used in lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries that power most electric cars, and demand for it is steadily increasing. A new analysis by Elsa Olivetti at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has found that there may be cobalt shortages if we don't start refining (提炼) and recycling it more efficiently or in greater quantities. She estimates that global demand for cobalt will rise to between 235,000 and 430,000 tonnes by 2030 — an amount that is at least 1.6 times the world's current ability to refine the metal, as of 2016 figures.

Cobalt is often produced as a by-product of copper or nickel mining. It is expensive, at around $33,000 per tonne, and also comes with a human cost. Most of the world's supply — 60 per cent— comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where mining has been linked to child labour and deaths.

The new analysis suggests short-term cobalt supply is adequate, but that more mining exploration, such as in the ocean, is required. In addition, we will need to speed up cobalt recycling by recovering it from batteries in unusable electric cars, laptops and mobile phones. Another option is to shift to batteries that use less cobalt, or none at all. Elon Musk's car firm Tesla is in talks with battery manufacturer CATL to use entirely cobalt-free batteries in its China-made cars.

Lithium-ion batteries in electric cars commonly use either lithium nickel cobalt aluminium oxide or lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide for their ability to provide a high energy density — a key factor in how far an electric car can go on a single charge. For short-range cars made and sold in China, Tesla claims that it will instead use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) (磷酸铁锂) batteries, which are much cheaper and have a longer lifespan (寿命). Besides, they have less of an environmental impact compared with those needing cobalt. The disadvantage is that they tend to have a lower energy density, reducing how far a car can travel without needing to be charged.

LiFePO 4 batteries are already widely used by other Chinese firms, including BYD, the world's biggest electric car manufacturer. If other electric car manufacturers follow internationally, we may be able to reduce our dependence on a limited mineral resource.

    1What is Elsa Olivetti's prediction?

    A.Cobalt will be needed badly.

    B.Cobalt will be recycled efficiently.

C.Cobalt will be refined in a different way.

D.Cobalt will be replaced by other heavy metals.

2What is a suggested solution to cobalt shortages?

    A.Turning to renewable energy sources.

    B.Choosing batteries produced by Tesla.

C.Decreasing the number of private vehicles.

D.Making the best use of abandoned batteries.

    3Compared with lithium-ion batteries, LiFePO 4 batteries _____.

    A.are more expensive B.are more eco-friendly

C.have fewer life cycles D.offer more usable energy

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Cobalt: a new choice for batteries

    B.How do lithium-ion batteries work?

C.Tesla vs. BYD: a tough competition

D.Can electric cars kick the cobalt habit?

  • 24、WHY A DOSE OF FEAR IS GOOD FOR YOU

Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “Do one thing every day that scares you.” She was onto something. Science has shown that feeling fear — in the right doses (量) — has several benefits.

·Feeling fear is fun and exciting. Many people scare themselves on purpose. 【1】

When you step outside your comfort zone, it is fear that makes you feel alive, which is fun and exciting. The excitement generated can also help reduce depression by increasing adrenaline (肾上腺素), which in turn increases excitement and glucose (changed into energy). 【2】 A dose of fear is an “eraser” for the mind.

·【3】 Being afraid of something can remind you of an area of your life that is limiting you. For instance, if you’re afraid of flying but face the fear and gather up the courage to step on an airplane, you can travel the world. Adding to your experiences means that you’ll create a varied life. You’ll also have fewer regrets.

·Fear makes you aware of what’s really important in life. How often have you said to yourself: “When I have more time, I’ll spend it with my family, pursue my passion, eat healthier or exercise more”? Fear makes you realize that “now” is the only time you have to achieve and follow through what is most important.【4】

Some say where fear meets courage is the sweet spot in which mountains get scaled and rivers are run.   【5】 We should all embrace our fear. Not the big fears that are life-threatening but the helpful fears that come in small doses.

    A.Fear helps you succeed.

    B.“Later” is never ensured.

C.Fear allows you to live life to the fullest.

D.They watch scary movies, ride roller coasters or go skydiving.

E.And every time you come through a challenge, you feel empowered.

F.Most of all, fear can be the birth place of change, creativity and innovation.

G.Actually, it’s nearly impossible to be thinking of your worries when you are experiencing fear.
