二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Simon Groot, a seed expert of the Netherlands, is credited with introducing high-quality, disease-resistant vegetable seeds to more than 60 countries including the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia. He was awarded the World Food Prize on Monday.

Developing seeds has been the Groot family business for a long time. He is the sixth generation of, what is called, a seedsman. He began his search for better vegetable seeds to help farmers in Southeast Asia in 1981. When he was 47, his family’s company had just been taken over by a larger corporation.

Sixteen years earlier, he had made his first trip to Indonesia. There, Groot learned that vegetable seeds which were developed for the moderate climate of Europe, did poorly when planted in the hot tropics(热带地区). He thought there was a great possibility of introducing hybrid(杂交的)vegetables to the area. The area lacked vegetable seed developers who were trying to create hybrids for the local climate.

“It was neither charity nor business. It was a passion for providing farmers all over the world with good seeds,” said Groot. Now 85, he said developing seeds has always concerned him, “I noticed the seed quality in that part of world was so much below our standards and below achievable standards.” He added that he “could not stand” that the farmers there did not have better seeds.

At the time, farmers in Southeast Asia usually saved seeds from season to season. That was because the seeds available for sale were often old. Those seeds were usually from Europe or North America and did not grow well in their tropical climate. This meant that the farmers ended up with smaller crops, and lower quality that changed greatly from season to season. The plants also could easily become infected with diseases.

Groot received the $250, 000 World Food Prize during an award ceremony at the Iowa Capitol.

【1】What do we learn about Groot from Paragraph 2?

A.He learned vegetable feeds did poorly in Europe.

B.He carried on a business of several generations.

C.He has introduced seeds to countries worldwide.

D.He turned his family’s company into a larger one.

【2】What drove Groot to develop new vegetable seeds?

    A.Doing charity.

    B.Making money.

    C.Support from farmers.

    D.Sense of responsibility.

【3】What was the challenge for farmers in Southeast Asia?

A.Having no access to high-quality seeds.

B.Having no financial support for better seeds.

C.Lacking advanced technology for growing crops.

D.Failing to export their produce to western countries.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Business Has Been Passed from Generation to Generation

B.Vegetable Seeds for Hot Areas Have Been Created

C.Family Business Serves Farmers in Southeast Asia

D.World Food Prize Goes to Dutch Seed Developer

  • 22、The most obvious dog fetish (迷恋) today is the longing for cuteness. Almost every day you can see adorable pictures of dogs and other animals that will make you smile and say, “How cute!”

It is a cultural phenomenon that the media scholar James Meese calls the “cute economy” which exists primarily on social media, is user-generated, and is heavily dominated by pictures of animals, especially pets. The goal is to generate a positive response, probably followed by a tap on the screen to “like” and “share”. We can click through image after image of cute animals doing cute things, feeling a little boost of good cheer.

The marketing researchers have identified some of the most common categories of cuteness in online pet content: animals doing silly things; animals of extreme size; animals with unusual looks; and animals behaving in ways that seem human-like. Dogs and other animals in the “cute economy” are often further humanized by being dressed in clothing and accessorized (装饰) with hats, jewellery, nail polish and fur dyed a rainbow of colors. Users who post successfully and with some strategies can make money by doing so. Thus, certain dogs have become cuteness celebrities, with millions of devoted followers and paid content from advertisers.

Unfortunately, the price of the “cute economy” comes at a serious cost. The cutest and most popular breeds tend to be those with the most significant risk of health and behavioral problems. Cuteness is often coupled with their discomfort. People are drawn to the cuteness of dogs with extremely foreshortened skulls and extremely short legs and awkwardly long bodies, such as the French bulldog and the corgi.

Actually, there are well-established health issues. We should treat the “cute economy” with caution, like resisting the commodification (商品化) of appearance by opting out of social media channels promoting the “cute economy”. We can also choose not to “like” or “share” images of dogs whose cuteness is linked with discomfort. Although we are biologically attracted to dogs that are super cute, we should be mindful in our “impulses”.

【1】What is the key to the “cute economy” according to the text?

    A.Taking photos of different animals.

    B.Cute animals’ attractive appearance.

    C.Pets’ owners’ liking adorable pictures.

D.Posting cute animals’ pictures on social media.

【2】Which kind of cuteness is most likely to be the online pet content?

A.A normal-sized dog is eating bones.

B.A white cat is quietly lying next to its owner.

C.A monkey is attentively taking care of its baby.

D.A parrot dressed in a suit is singing and dancing.

【3】What is the side effect of the “cute economy”?

A.It will change the animals’ nature.

B.It may make the animals not so cute.

C.It may cause health problems to the animals.

D.It will result in a decline in animal population.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

A.The Cute Economy and Its Price

    B.Share Pictures or Not

    C.Happiness from Pets

    D.Marketing Strategy — Cuteness

  • 24、   In geometry, architecture and art, a unique number is believed to be the secret to perfection. That is the golden ratio, or 1:1.618, a mathematical proportion.

The first recorded mention of the golden ratio in history dates back to 300 BC. The Greek mathematician Euclid called it the "extreme ratio". Its actual value is 1.6180339887498484820…But it's usually rounded up to 1. 618. At the beginning of the 20th century, the American mathematician Mark Barr gave it the name phi, pronounced fee, after the Greek sculptor Phidias.

The golden ratio exists when a line is divided into two parts and the longer section(a)divided by the smaller section(b)is equal to the entire length of the line(a+b)divided by the longer section(a).

Once you start to notice the golden ratio, you will see it everywhere. Leonardo da Vinci is often associated with the golden ratio. His most famous painting, the Mona Lisa, seems to contain several examples of this geometric proportion.

Stephen Silver, who has worked for big studios such as Disney, Warner Brothers and Sony Pictures Animation, has designed the characters for popular animated television shows such as Kim Possible and Danny Phantom. He shares the secret of how to create perfect designs. "Characters with an even design are likely to lack movement," he says. "They feel ordinary and quickly lose appeal.” Instead, he applies the golden ratio to break up proportions to create "more contrast and variation in shape", which makes his characters come alive. The golden ratio prevents him designing characters that are too evenly spaced.

Silver isn't the only graphic artist who thinks the golden ratio is special. Golden geometry can be found in the Pepsi, Twitter, and Disney logos. Next time you draw a picture or design a logo, you can try it out!

1Who named the golden ratio phi?

    A.Euclid B.Mark Barr. C.Phidias. D.Leonardo da Vinci.

2Which of the following best describes the golden ratio?

    A.a/b=(a+b)/a B.a/b=a/(a+b)

    C.a/b=b/(a+b) D.a/b= (a+b)/b

3What's Silver's attitude to the golden ratio?

    A.Skeptical. B.Cautious C.Positive D.Negative.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.The secret to the perfection B.The golden ratio in the art.

C.The famous character designer. D.How to be a famous artist.

  • 26、Robots will create double the number of jobs that they will destroy, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF), but there will be significant shifts in the structure of America’s workforce that may impact everyone. The report says that 75 million jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and automation. But it also suggests that 133 million new jobs may be created as organizations shift the balance between human workers and machines.

It is a widely held belief that routine, low-skilled jobs are most at risk for automation, but the report shows that many middle-class roles are also at risk. Financial analysts, accountants and lawyers could all see significant changes by 2022. But manual workers could be among the hardest hit.

Meanwhile, there could be a huge change in the structure of the workforce, with the executives surveyed by WEF expecting a shift away from full-time work to flexible employment with a focus on productivity.

All industries expect big skills gaps, stating that at least 50 percent of their workforce will require reskilling of some degree. The aviation, travel and tourism industry will have the largest demand for reskilling.
