二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Large gatherings such as weddings and conferences can be socially overwhelming. Pressure to learn people’s names only adds to the stress. A new facial-recognition app could come to the rescue, but privacy experts recommend proceeding with caution.

The app, called SocialRecall, connects names with faces via smartphone cameras and facial recognition, potentially avoiding the need for formal introductions. “It breaks down these social barriers we have when meeting somebody,” says Barry Sandrew, who created the app.

After receiving an invitation to download SocialRecall from an event organizer, the user is asked to take two selfies and sign in via social media. At the event, the app is active within a previously defined geographical area. When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee’s face, the app identifies the individual, displays the person’s name, and links to his or her social media profile. To protect privacy, it recognizes only those who have agreed to participate and automatically deletes users’ data after an event.

Ann Cavoukian, a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app’s creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app, they should know that “there may be unintended consequences down the road with that information being used in another context that might come back to bite you.”

The start-up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia, or “face blindness,” a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met. To use this app, a person first acquires an image of someone’s face, from either the smartphone’s camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spots that same face in real life, the previously entered information is displayed. The collected data are stored only on a user’s phone, according to the team behind the app.

    【1】Why was SocialRecall developed?

    A.To identify people.

    B.To meet friends.

    C.To organize events.

    D.To take photos.

    【2】What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.How the app was created.

    B.What makes the app popular.

    C.How the app functions.

D.What people can do with the app.

【3】How does SocialRecall help people with prosopagnosia?

A.By giving names to the photos kept in their smartphones.

B.By collecting information previously entered in the phone.

C.By providing the information of a person when they first meet.

D.By showing the person’s information when it spots a stored face.

【4】What can we learn about SocialRecall from the passage?

A.It may put people’s privacy at risk.

    B.It has caused unintended consequences.

C.It can prevent some communication disorders.

D.It’s praised by users for its protective measures.

  • 22、Are you single or married? Are you a cat or a dog owner? Do you exercise, or are you a “couch potato” (a person who sits on the sofa all day watching TV, eating and basically doing nothing)? These questions and many others are about your lifestyle.

People in the United States feel that they can choose their lifestyles and even shape their own identities. The great variety of lifestyles leads to constant national discussion of choices that people make. This freedom of choice is fun and exciting, but it also creates stress and uncertainty. In newspapers, lifestyle issues are discussed in the features or style section. In The Chicago Tribune this section is called “Tempo”.People turn to this section for lively discussion on lifestyle choices they face with regard to their personal identities, their families, and their social lives.

Lifestyle choices also involve moral and social issues. How should children be raised? How should people behave on a date? How should elderly people be treated? How can people stay happily married? All these kinds of issues are constantly discussed and are constantly changing. Not only are experts such as psychologists consulted, but stars from the political and entertainment worlds are held up as lifestyle leaders as well.In the newspaper, feature articles called profiles discuss in detail the personal lives or public work of movie stars, authors, artists, and exceptional individuals who are not stars. The lifestyle choices these people make contribute to the public discussion of all the issues that people think about.

  • 23、Whether your biggest meal is breakfast or dinner seems to make no difference when it comes to losing weight if you are eating the same number of calories.

Alexandra Johnstone at the University of Aberdeen in the UK and her colleagues recruited 30 adults who were overweight or obese and had no other underlying health conditions. The researchers then provided participants with food and beverages for 10weeks.

For the first week, the participants followed a weight maintenance(保持) diet, consuming 1.5 times the number of calories needed at their resting metabolic(新陈代谢的) rate. Calories were evenly distributed across three meals each day.

For the following four weeks, participants were divided into two groups: 14people ate 45 percent of their calories at breakfast, 35 percent at lunch and 20 percent at dinner. The other 16 ate 20 percent of their calories at breakfast, 35 percent at lunch and 45 percent at dinner. Both groups were restricted to the calories required at their resting metabolic rate, and had 35 percent of calories from fat, 30 percent from protein and 35 percent from carbohydrates.

After the four weeks, both groups followed the weight maintenance diet again for one week before switching to the opposite diet for the next four weeks. So, people on the big breakfast diet ate the big dinner diet and vice versa(反之亦然).

The researchers found that there was little difference in how much weight participants lost when they ate more in the morning or the evening:people lost an average of 3.33 kilograms during the large breakfast diet compared with an average of 3.38 kilograms during the large dinner diet. That suggests calories are metabolised the same regardless of when they are consumed, says Johnstone.

One limitation of this study is its length, says Mindy Patterson at Texas Woman’s University. Previous research has found that front-loading calories earlier in the day leads to significant differences in weight loss after five weeks, not four, she says.“Perhaps they should have gone a little bit longer in duration and then we would have seen that difference.”

【1】What do we know from the process of the research?

A.All the participants followed the same diet for 10 weeks.

B.Participants ate the same number of calories across three meals each day.

C.At first, participants ate more calories than what they need.

D.During the first 4 weeks, all the participants ate big breakfast.

【2】What can we infer from the text?

A.Calories are burnt the same whenever they are consumed.

B.People who have big breakfast lose weight easily.

C.People consuming 1.5 times the number of calories lose weight easily.

D.Calories from different sources are consumed differently.

【3】How does the writer tell us the result of the research?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By making comparisons.

    C.By relating to previous results.

    D.By dividing into different categories.

【4】What is Mindy’s attitude towards the research?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Skeptical.

    C.Positive.

    D.Supportive.

  • 24、Day in and day out. Rose, a neat, well-dressed, dark-haired young woman carries out her work at an office in a business park near Cambridge and spends hours studying pictures of children being abused. She watches the images again and again, looking for the tiniest details that might deliver a young victim from hell. They might be as small as the titles of books on a table, the action of making the bed or the images on the posters on the wall—anything that might provide a clue to the place where the child is suffering, and might finally lead the police to the abuser.

How can Rose decide to do such work? And all that for a salary of less than $23,000 a year? She said her motivation in joining the work was to protect the public." When I first started this job, there was anger at the beginning. But when you see what the children have to endure, you know someone has to be there to protect them. If I can play a small part, I will help make a difference."

The 33-year-old woman is enthusiastic about her job. Rose and her team have done what they could to put the children's life back together. They are very proud of what they have done.

The nature of her work has changed her for the better. "I'm a lot more focused on the positive, much more relaxed about the world. I enjoy the good people around me," she says. Rose thinks that her job is a bit like giving blood. Maybe you don't like doing it, but someone has to. She regards it as her duty to help abused children.

    1What is Rose's job?

    A. Managing a big business park.

    B. Finding clues that help save abused children.

    C. Teaching and looking after abused children.

    D. Studying images on the posters on the walls.

    B. children will live a happier life than ever before

    C. the number of children who are abused will be reduced

    D. Rose’s life has been positively affected by her job.
