  • 21、A-Z OF COACHING

Welcome to Barefoot Coaching’s A-Z series. We aim to simplify what might otherwise be complex psychological theories and models and talk about them in a way that anybody can understand. We believe that everybody benefits from learning about and practising coaching skills - and it’s catching! Coaching spreads into other areas of our life and work and the positive effects are felt far beyond just ourselves. Each issue we will be focusing on a different element of coaching. Last month we explored Happiness, this month we will focus on Intuition.

    ‘I’ IS FOR INTUITION

“There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen.” Rumi

If you have ever followed a “hunch”, gone with your gut, listened to your inner voice, or felt “I just know”, then you have accessed your intuition. We don’t have to reject logic or intellect to embrace intuition -good decisions are often the result of instinct and intellect working together. Here are 3 ways to improve your intuition:

    ● Wild writing. Every day for a week, sit quietly and write for 5 minutes without thinking. Just let the words appear on the page. Then notice what you learn from your untamed thoughts.

    ● Walking without purpose. Go for a walk (without your phone or others distractions). Take notice if you find your attention being drawn to any particular sights or sounds. Identify what feelings, thoughts or meaning they have for you.

    ● When faced with a decision, ask yourself “What does my head, heart and gut say?”

    For light sleepers

Millions of people have trouble falling asleep each night, which is why Light Sleeper was created.

Developed in the United Kingdom, Light Sleeper's makers say it can help a person fall asleep and also help a person fall back to sleep after waking up in the middle of the night.

Light Sleeper works by projecting (投射) a light onto the ceiling while the person is lying down. The idea is to watch the light, because the light moving in a circle has a relaxing effect.

One of the advantages of the product is that it won't disturb other people in the room. The product can be easily moved and will switch itself off after 30 minutes to save power.

    Stop the snoring (打鼾)

Here's a new product designed to slow down the frequency and level of your snoring. The Snore Stopper has a sensitive instrument that will detect when you're snoring. Once it does that, it will send a very mild electronic signal to your wrist. This consequently changes your sleeping position to stop you from snoring. The Snore Stopper; won't cause any damage to your body.

    Get your true colors

Photoshop features a pen that will copy the color settings of what you are monitoring onscreen to use as a color in your program. Now an off-line product allows you to pick a color when not using the computer software.

The Color Picker is a concept pen. After placing the pen against an object, the user just presses the scan button. Color sensors (感应器) inside the pen send information to a box, which then mixes red, green and blue to produce the desired ink color.

    Keep it fresh

More high technology products are showing up in the kitchen. A new Bagel dome (圆顶形物) advertises that it will keep your baked goods fresher for longer periods of time. The product, which is able to remove air, works for bread rolls, cakes and other perishables. To use it, you just push a button at the top.

2The underlined word "perishables" in the last paragraph refers to foods which .

    A. are easy to keep B. go bad easily

    C. are rich in vitamins  D. keep you thin

3It can be learned from the passage that .

    A. the Color Picker is convenient to use

    C. the Bagel dome mainly serves as decoration

    D. few people would like to try the Snore Stopper

  • 23、“The only way to accomplish something is through hard work,” says actor Greg Tarzan Davis. “The first step is to get started.”

In a virtual interview, I asked Davis about his life and career. He grew up in a large family in New Orleans, Louisiana. After earning a degree in elementary education at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Davis became a teacher. He always encouraged his young students to follow their dreams.

One day, he decided to take his own advice. Although he enjoyed teaching, he had been enthusiastic about acting. “The first step is always the hardest,” Davis said. “But once you get past it and stay consistent, I promise, you will achieve your goal.”

At the age of 29, Davis had roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One. He also starred in Grey’s Anatomy, a TV series about a group of young doctors. For 2022’s Top Gun, the actor learned how to fly a fighter jet in order to play the role of Lieutenant Javy “Coyote” Machado.

Davis sees the connection between acting and teaching. “As an actor, you’re required to dig deep into the depths of your childlike imagination when playing different roles,” he said. “What I learned the most as a teacher was how to be free with my mind and imaginative with my thoughts by simply observing my first-grade students and listening to the big ideas they had, which were so real to them.”

Davis still keeps an eye on the future. He is motivated by a desire to help the next generation follow their dreams. “The people who come after me inspire me,” he said. He wants to show others, especially kids, that anything is possible. He hosted movie screenings in New Orleans as a way to give back to the community that nurtured him as a child.

【1】What did Davis encourage his students to do?

    A.Value time and energy.

    B.Become film stars.

    C.Go after their goals.

    D.Work hard at their lessons.

【2】Which idiom best matches Davis’ choice of the new career?

    A.No pains, no gains.

B.It is the first step that costs.

    C.Think carefully before you act.

D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

【3】What do acting and teaching have in common?

A.They need a lot of patience.

    B.They are related to imagination.

C.They bring a sense of achievement.

D.They help realize the author’s dream.

【4】What does the underlined word “nurtured” mean in the last paragraph?

    A.Brought up.

    B.Watched over.

    C.Looked for.

    D.Took control of.

  • 24、   If you have some free time to socialize, do you prefer to spend it with your best friend or partner, or with a larger group of people?

A new study investigated what group size people actually look for and encounter in everyday life. The scientists asked more than 4.000 people from the U. S.and the Netherlands to report the size of their social groups for a wide variety of activities. For eight different activities (going to a bar, chatting at work, chatting off work, having dinner, going on aholiday, going to a movie theatre, working on a project, playing sports), people reported a group size of two more often than they reported larger group sizes. Interestingly, for about half of these activities, women reported a group sizeof two significantly more often than men did, suggesting that women prefer a social group size of two even more than men do.

The researchers also used a research technique called realtime experience sampling in the second part of the study. 274 volunteers were asked seven times a day to report the last social situation they had experienced. The results were clear. Two was the most common group size with 52.6 percent. Thus, this part of the study also suggested that two is the most common group size in social interactions.

So why do people prefer spending their time with one other person compared to spending their time with larger groups? Researchers explained that in general, social interactions with just one other person allow for more control of the situation, especially when it comes to reciprocity (互助). When we interact with just one other person, one’s choices directly affect the other person and only that person. Thus, it is easy to distinguish whether there is mutual cooperation (for example, both people take turns paying for dinner) or whether someone acts selfishly (for example, one person never pays the bill). In larger groups, the situation gets much more complicated.

【1】What is the new study mainly about?

A.What social group size people prefer.

B.Whom people like to spend time with.

C.Which activities people choose to kill time.

D.How people make friends in social activities.

【2】Why did researchers ask the volunteers repeatedly in a day?

A.To prove the result of the former study.

B.To make their activities last longer.

C.To know the variety of their activities.

D.To collect their latest social information.

【3】What drives many people to interact with only one other person?

    A.The closer relationship.

    B.The limited choices.

    C.The sense of control.

    D.The selfish intention.

【4】In which section of a website can you read this text?

    A.Advanced technology.

    B.Social psychology.

    C.Entertainment.

    D.Health.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇 150 词左右的文章。

The National Outline (纲要) for Educational Reform and Development is bringing change to China’s annual College Entrance Examination.

Currently, a student’s score on the College Entrance Examination is the only factor determining his or her future. Universities set minimum scores in screening (筛选) prospective students, and only those whose scores are higher than the minimum are admitted. The outline suggests that universities choose students based on not only the results of the entrance exam, but also other criteria. For example, if a student’s score is lower than his peers’, but he shows great potential in the subject he’s applying for, then the college might consider admitting him despite the lower general score.

The outline also proposes that some subjects, as a pilot project (试点项目), carry out multiple exams each year. This means that if a student fails an exam, he may have other chances at the exam in the coming semester. And to improve the system for higher education, China will gradually classify exams according to different kinds of education. The outline states that entrance exams for colleges and universities should be organized by the Ministry of Education, while exams for vocational schools (职业学校) should be organized by provincial educational departments.
