二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Many find it easy to fall asleep during a long bus trip. But why? 【1】 The first of them is a noise called white noise, which is a type of noise produced by combining sounds with different frequencies together. Buses are often crowded every day with people going to and from work. 【2】 They produce consistent noises, like the hum of tires or the purring (嗡嗡声) of the engine.

Another popular view on why it’s easy to fall asleep on buses is because of the rocking motion. “The motion of buses resembles a mother swaying a baby in her arms.” Frankie Chow, founder of Ulu Travel Agency, told The Washington Post. However, it’s not exactly the rocking movement that induces sleep. 【3】 If you were rocked to sleep as a baby, you’d associate that rocking motion with going to sleep.

【4】 Hence, long period of inactivity slows your brain activity down because there’s no stimulus to keep it awake. You just sit down and enjoy the scenery as the vehicle moves along the road. Basically, you’re away from the things that keep your mind and your physical body busy.

With a continuous stream of passengers getting on the bus, the oxygen on the bus will get thinner. 【5】 This reduces oxygen to the brain and slows it down, causing people to feel sleepy.

A.Here are a few tips to help you stay awake.

B.Fresh air is necessary for every human being.

C.On buses, you don’t move around very much.

D.According to a survey, there are several possible reasons.

E.Rather, it’s the association between rocking and sleeping.

F.Therefore, they are the perfect environment for such noise.

G.Carbon dioxide increases when there are lots of people in a small place.

  • 27、If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it is still safe to eat? The easiest way is to check the “use-by date” printed on the wrapper. If that date has already passed, you’re likely to throw the candy away.

But is that really necessary?According to a new report from the US Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don't fully understand what expiration (截止日期)dates, or “use-by dates”, actually mean.

Food dating was introduced in the 1970s because consumers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use-by dates were only supposed to indicate freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.

But the truth is that these dates aren't related to the risk of food poisoning or food borne illness, according to Time News. However, most customers misinterpreted use-by dates and related them to the safety of the food, and they still largely do now. Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after purchase even though the use-by date is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, strawberry flavored drinks may lose their red color and biscuits may lose their crunch (松脆), but they are not harmful.

“It's a confusing subject, the difference between food quality and food safety,” said Jena Roberts, vice president of National Food Lab, a US food testing company. “Even in the food industry I have colleagues who get confused.”

This is why scientists are calling for a standard explanation to be printed following the use-by dates. “We want this to be clearly communicated so consumers are not misunderstanding the data and contributing to a lot of waste,” said Dana Gunders, a staff scientist with the NRDC.

But this won't be a mistake that is easy to correct since people have believed it for so long . Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently—some are still safe to eat long after their use-by date while others are not..

As a result, food industry officials are now thinking of changing the use-by date to a date indicating when food is most likely to go bad.

【1】The use-by date was first intended to ________.

    A.show the safety of food

B.give a warning of food poisoning

    C.tell the freshness of food.

D.indicate the relation between food and illness

【2】The underlined word “misinterpreted” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.

    A.made guesses about

    B.formed a wrong idea about

    C.made wrong use of

    D.took no notice of

【3】Which of the following is TRUE?

A.Most customers understand what use-by dates mean.

B.“Use-by dates” have existed for more than 50 years.

C.Biscuits can't be eaten when not as crunchy as they are bought.

D.Even after their use-by dates pass, some foods are still safe to eat.

【4】Scientists are calling for a standard explanation to be printed together with the use-by dates because ________.

A.use-by dates are not helpful or reliable

B.most consumers often misunderstand use-by dates

C.more consumers get worried about food safety

D.the quality level of different foods changes differently

  • 28、   NASA has observed a strange effect of human spaceflight: astronauts' blood going backwards and clotting (凝固).The observations could have serious effects on plans to send astronauts to Mars and to allow tourism in space.

An unnamed astronaut on the International Space Station(ISS) was carrying out a scan on his body - guided by experts on the ground. Similar test before the astronaut went to space came back normal, but the scan taken in space revealed a clot of blood, appalling NASA doctors. "We were not expecting this. This has never been reported before, said NASA scientist Karina Marshall-Goebel.

The astronaut didn't have any clot-related symptoms, but was given blood-thinning medication for the rest of his time in orbit to prevent more clots forming.

NASA researchers then observed the jugular veins of 11 astronauts on the ISS, and in five of those 11 astronauts, blood flow in jugular vein had stopped. The jugular vein is one of the most important parts of the body, which runs between the heart and the head, draining (使流走) oxygenated blood from the brain. This “draining" process is an essential way to reduce pressure in the brain. Blood that doesn't move normally through the body is a major concern because it can lead to clotting, which can cause more serious problems like damage to the lungs.

The blood in the jugular vein also began moving in the opposite direction (from the heart towards the head) for two astronauts. NASA scientists described this as “extremely abnormal” : and said that the blood may have switched directions due to a blockage. A similar phenomenon has been observed on Earth for patients with tumours (肿瘤)that force blood to find a different route to the heart.

“I think it was probably scary for everybody. But I think the fact that we found this now is really, really good news, because if you know this is a risk factor of spaceflight, it's something that you can monitor and prevent," said Ms Marshall-Goebel.

【1】What does the underlined word “appalling” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Relaxing

    B.Embarrassing

    C.Attracting

    D.Shocking

【2】What can be learned about blood flow in the jugular vein?

    A.It seems to clot frequently.

    B.It keeps the brain oxygenated.

C.It places great pressure on the brain.

D.It usually runs through the heart to the head.

【3】What might NASA scientists do next?

A.Monitor various risk factors of spaceflights.

B.Find ways to deal with astronauts' blood clots.

C.Create an Earth-like environment for astronauts.

D.Explore reasons for the blood changing directions.

【4】What's the best title for the text?

A.Astronauts experience faster blood flow in space

B.Astronauts' blocked veins bring medical insight

C.Astronauts' blood flows backwards in space

D.Astronauts are suffering from serous blood diseases

  • 29、An international team led by scientists at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has recently developed the world’s first 3D artificial eye with capabilities that even outperform those of the human eyes, bringing vision to humanoid robots and new hope to patients with visual damage.

Scientists have spent decades trying to produce the exact copies of the structure and clarity of a biological eye, but vision provided by existing artificial eyes with external wires are still in poor resolution (分辨率) with 2D flat image sensors. The Electrochemical Eye (EC-Eye) developed at HKUST, however, may actually offer sharper vision than a human eye, with extra functions such as the ability to see things in darkness.

The key feature allowing such breakthroughs is a 3D artificial retina (视网膜), made of nanowire light sensors which are like the photoreceptor in human retinas. The scientists connected the nanowire light sensors to some liquid-metal wires serving as nerves behind the human-made retina during the experiment, and successfully carried out the visual signal transmission to reflect what the eye sees onto the computer screen. In the future, those nanowire light sensors could be directly connected to the nerves of the visually damaged patients. Apart from that, the artificial retina can receive more light signals and potentially attain a higher image resolution than human retina.

With further adjustment, the EC-Eye can be a self-powered image sensor, so there is no need for external power source, which will be much more user-friendly as compared with the current technology. “The current artificial eyes are still of no match to the human eyes. A new technology is in urgent need, and it gives me a strong motivation to start this unconventional project. In the next step, we plan to further improve the performance of our device. Animal and clinical trials are now being planned. I think if everything is on track, perhaps in five years, the technology will become practical,” said Prof. Fan, whose team has spent nine years to complete the current study.

【1】What’s the feature of the EC Eye?

A.It uses 2D flat image sensors.

B.It provides a clearer vision than human eyes.

C.It performs better at night than in the day.

D.It is attached with external wires.

【2】What’s the function of nanowire light sensors?

    A.To send computer signals.

B.To serve as nerves behind the retina.

    C.To receive visual signals.

D.To connect nerves of patients to the wires.

【3】What can we infer about the EC- Eye from Dr. Fan’s words?

A.It is different from the previous devices.

B.It has been improved by the team.

C.It will be in clinical trials in five years.

D.It is of no match to human eyes.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.EC-Eye Will Become Popular

B.Nanowire Light Sensors Help People See

C.Scientists Have Developed First Artificial 3D Eye

D.EC-Eye Helps to Cure People of Eye Diseases

    American High School Life

On August 26, 2016, I was a 1 to begin my freshman year in an American high school. G 2 up in Beijing, I needed to deal with and overcome several difficulties. Fortunately, there are detailed instructions for students to follow step by step, from enrollment (登记注册) to the academic program.

Each semester, the school holds an orientation (培训) for transfer students. We thought that would be the p 3 time for us to learn more about the school. The a 4 we take part in included getting to know your campus, finding your classrooms and learning how to read the bulletin board. The biggest difference is that the students change classrooms for each subject. From Monday to Friday, the schedule also changes. Every student has different classes from the o 5 depending on their electives. Do you think that’s c 6? I had thought it might be difficult, but actually I had no problem after the first week. Each day, students a 7  seven classes. They have five minutes to get from one class to another. Because the hallways are so packed, they often push one another o 8 of their way to make it in time.

At first I k 9 avoiding attention, but I realized that I’d been anxious for no reason. High school was anything b 10 a horrible place. Now I am finding my way despite the language barrier and looking forward to a great school year.
