二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Has this happened to you? You’re about to drift off to sleep when suddenly you feel like you’re falling or coming down on a roller coaster.

You then wake up to realize that you’re safe in your bed. You may have been confused or frightened for a second or two and your heart may be beating faster. You may have also felt the muscles in your body jerk(抽搐) when this all happened. Did you ever wonder why?

This falling sensation, together with a body movement known as a “sleep start”, is what doctors and scientists call a myoclonic(肌阵挛的)jerk, and it usually happens right before going into deeper stages of sleep. Here’s why doctors think the falling feeling and myoclonic jerks happen. When you fall asleep, normally your body temperature goes down and your heart start to beat just a little slower. This is because your brain signals your body to relax to prepare for sleep. When your muscles are relaxed, you go into the very first stages of sleep, but you’re not sleeping too deeply yet.

This brain activity may cause your larger muscles to contract(收缩) a little bit. In response, another part of your brain will make up a very quick mini-dream to go along with what is happening. You might think this would take a while, but your brain works so fast that it makes up the story almost at the same instant that your muscles jerk.

During this light sleep, you can be awakened easily. People who wake up during this light sleep believe they haven’t fallen asleep yet. That’s why you may think that your body jerked right before you were about to fall asleep.

Myoclonic jerk are a normal part of sleep. Most people have them at one time or another. But many people don’t realize their muscles are jerking during night sleep if it doesn’t wake them up.

So the next time you dream about falling and wake up in a sweat, don’t worry! Your body is just telling your muscles to relax and get some rest!

【1】People sometimes wake up during a light sleep because______.

    A. they are disturbed by others.

    B. they are too tired to fall asleep.

    C. their bodies are preparing for sleep.

    D. they believe their lives are in danger.

【2】 What does the underlined part what is happening” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A. The body jerk B. The mini- dream

    C. The slow heartbeat   D. The falling body temperature

【3】The author thinks myoclonic jerks during sleep are _____.

    A. worrying B. usual C. abnormal D. useful

【4】It can be inferred that myoclonic jerks ________.

    A. lead to muscle disease

    B. happen in a deep sleep

    B. are related to brain disease

    D. don’t always wake people up

  • 22、A great loss—Shirley Temple dies at 85

    February 12, 2014

BY DERRIK J. LANG, Associated Press

Shirley Temple Black, who died on February 10that age 85, wasn’t just a child star. She was THE child star—the sweet little girl whose shining smile helpedilluminesome of the darkest days the US has known during the Great Depression.

It’s hard today to imagine the super star Shirley was once “America’s Little Darling”. She sang and danced her way to the top of the box office in such films as Bright Eyes, Curly Top and Heidi. By 1940, she had appeared in 43 films. Temple teamed with Bill Robison in four movies, and their dance on the stairs in The Little Colonel is still a legendary film moment.

In the 1930s, her name on a movie introduction assured (保证) a packed house. She inspired dolls, dresses, dishes—even a drink (alcohol-free, of course).

US President Franklin D. Roosevelt once famously said that “as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right.’’

Unlike so many of today’s child stars, Temple didn’t end up with her name appearing across the headlines for bad behaviors. Instead of getting her photos on front pages or struggling with drugs and alcohol, Temple went on to a second career in diplomacy (外交), including presidential appointments as ambassador to Ghana.

She surprised a lot of people who doubted her with her grace, knowledge and eagerness to serve. In fact, her career in public service (20 years) was longer than her career in movies (19). The role she valued most, however, was as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

The world has lost a treasured Hollywood legend. But her movies will allow that little dynamic figure to continue charming audiences for a very long time.

1The word “illumine” in Paragraph 1 means _______.

    A. shorten   B. sweeten

    C. strengthen   D. brighten

2Temple, as a child movie star, can best be described as _______.

    A. sweet and lively   B. gentle and kind

    C. smart and knowledgeable   D. shy and attractive

3What part did she regard as the most important in her life?

    A. A top movie star.   B. A businesswoman.

    C. Her family role.   D. Her diplomacy career.

4Where does this passage possibly come from?

    A. A biography.   B. A newspaper.

    C. A magazine.   D. A poster.

  • 23、The Wrestler Who Became an Author

Pete Watson looks like the biggest, sweetest teddy bear you ever saw. It is only when he opens his mouth that you notice his missing front teeth. He is a three-time world champion wrestler and now an author who has written several novels. However, what impresses people most is not his status as a champion or an author, but his unique understanding of wrestling.

Watson does not come from a traditional wrestling family. His father was an athletics director with a PhD, while his mother was a physical education teacher. He was a big boy, who was often bullied for his size. One day his neighbor had a go at him, and for the first time Watson realized that he could use his weight and size instead of feeling awkward about it. It was a turning point.

At college, he did a degree in communication studies. Meanwhile, he was learning the ropes of professional wrestling. His parents did not object to his learning to wrestle. They were just really insistent that he finished college. “I am pretty sure that they thought I’d get hurt and quit, but I didn’t,” he said. Watson insisted on the training and enjoyed every game. Once he said to his fans, “The process of the games is the most enjoyable thing for me. It’s good to have a lot of cheers during the games. They encourage me to do it better.”

Some fans asked him what he thought of wrestling, for they wanted to know if he had to be a good actor to become a good wrestler. Watson gave a definite answer. “I used to really dislike the acting label,” he said. “But it is acting. When it’s really good, when you’re feeling it and letting that real emotion fly, it comes closer to being real.”

Now Watson has retired and devoted the time to his family and books—his next novel is about boy wrestlers living on the same block. He does not think this life is so different from wrestling. “Wrestling is all about characters,” he says. “So when my fans hear I’ve written a novel, I don’t get the sense that they feel I’ve abandoned them.”

1According to Paragraph 2, what was the turning point for Watson?

A.He became annoyed at his weight and size. B.He decided to become an athletics director.

C.He dreamed to come from a wrestling family. D.He began to fight back at those who hurt him.

2How does Watson regard the idea that wrestling is like acting?

A.He has come to accept it. B.He doesn’t like the suggestion.

C.He believes good actors come from wrestlers. D.He doesn’t think wrestling can compare to acting.

3Watson’s present life is not so different from his past profession because ______.

A.his books are all about his past profession B.his work is still connected with characters

C.his fans still follow his career with interest D.his family gives him the same support as before

  • 24、When a tornado hit the small town of Otwell, Indiana years ago, Kathryn Martin, 32, who lived 60 miles away in Evansville, couldn’t get the news out of her mind. “I kept thinking, ‘Those poor people. Somebody’s got to help them,’” she says. She knew firsthand what they were going through.

She gave the items to the Red Cross, and as she was leaving, she saw a couple sorting through the ruins of their home while their children were watching. So Kathryn stopped and gave a few toys to the kids and played with them for a while. “The parents couldn’t thank me enough for what I did for their children,” she says.

She talked her family, friends and neighbors into joining her and spent the next few months organizing fundraisers. Finally, in August 2007, she showed C.J.’s Bus, a 35-foot school bus that was turned into a mobile playroom.

In the following years, stocked with video games and DVDs, toys, crafts, books and more, the bus traveled to disaster-torn towns, giving the children there a safe place to play.
