21、When a tornado hit the small town of Otwell, Indiana years ago, Kathryn Martin, 32, who lived 60 miles away in Evansville, couldn’t get the news out of her mind. “I kept thinking, ‘Those poor people. Somebody’s got to help them,’” she says. She knew firsthand what they were going through.
Six months earlier, a tornado had struck her town, taking the lives of her 2-year-old son, C.J. and her mother-in-law. “It was the most terrible experience of my life,” she says. “That____will never go away, and it broke my heart to think about what these families were going through in Otwell.”
So Kathryn loaded her car with juice boxes, snacks and toys and drove to Otwell. She gave the items to the Red Cross, and as she was leaving, she saw a couple sorting through the ruins of their home while their children were watching. So Kathryn stopped and gave a few toys to the kids and played with them for a while. “The parents couldn’t thank me enough for what I did for their children,” she says.
On the drive back to Evansville, Kathryn came up with an idea to help more kids. She talked her family, friends and neighbors into joining her and spent the next few months organizing fundraisers. Finally, in August 2007, she showed C.J.’s Bus, a 35-foot school bus that was turned into a mobile playroom.
In the following years, stocked with video games and DVDs, toys, crafts, books and more, the bus traveled to disaster-torn towns, giving the children there a safe place to play. 22、 My father had died when I was young, so if I didn't acknowledge my mother's birthday, likely no one would. On her birthday, I decided to bake her some cookies, take them to her house and leave them with a little note for her.
But what to write about? My mother and I had not always been close. Pouring out words of love seemed insincere, but there were plenty of things I did appreciate, so I wrote a letter expressing my appreciation for what she had taught me. She taught me to live within our means, and not to go into debt. She taught me the color of someone's skin was irrelevant. She taught me helping others in need was its own reward. She taught me to value the elderly. She taught me how to see the shapes in the clouds. She taught me to appreciate the way the air smelled after a rain ...
Having finished the letter, I sent the cookies and the handwritten letter to my mother. That evening, she called and thanked me, saying it was a wonderful birthday present.
Two years later, she suffered a fatal heart attack. While cleaning out her house, I came across a photocopy of the birthday letter I had written to her in the drawer of the bedside table in the guest room. And then room after room, drawer after drawer revealed more photocopies of the same letter. There was one in the kitchen drawer and one taped to the inside of the kitchen cabinet. I also found one in a drawer in both bathrooms, another in the living room and two more in her bedroom.
Finally, I opened the drawer beside her bed, where I found an old handkerchief and as I pulled it out, a wrinkled piece of paper fluttered to the floor. It was the original birthday letter. It had been smoothed over and over again. I realized at that moment that the best things I could have given my mother weren't really things at all.
【1】What did the author learn from her mother?
A.Live a happy life regardless of how much money one has.
B.We should treat people of different skin colors differently.
C.One can be rewarded a lot of money when helping others.
D.It's of great importance to explore the beauty of nature.
【2】How many photocopies of the birthday letter did the author find in her mother's house?
A.Six. B.Seven. C.Eight. D.Nine.
【3】What does the author mean by saying the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A.What her mother value was her love not the gift itself.
B.She should never have sent any present to her mother.
C.Of all the gifts she had given her mother, nothing was best.
D.No gift was better than what she had given her mother.

Homonym: a word that has the same spelling and the same pronunciation as another world, but a different meaning
Same spelling, different meaning
Imagine, then a situation where two words are spelt and pronounced exactly the same way, but have completely different meanings.Welcome to the world of homonyms.Take, for example, the word ‘fail’ --- it can be a kind of festival, and adjective to describe the color of your hair or how you should play a game.
Don’t take it literally
So how do you know which meaning someone is referring to? --- You don’t, except by the context.Obviously, if someone asks you to ‘give them a hand’, they don’t want you to remove what is at the end of your arm.
What’s in a name?
Sometimes even the context doesn’t help much --- the result can be amusing. These sentences play with the double meaning of a noun:
I used to be a banker, but I lost interest.
Have you heard about the cross-eyed teacher who couldn’t control his pupils?
A small boy swallowed some coins and had to go to hospital. When his grandmother phoned to ask how he was, the nurse said: ‘No change yet’.
More ambiguity
And these examples play with the different meanings of a verb:
I wondered why the ball was getting bigger. Then it hit me.
No one knew she had a dental implant until it came out in a conversation.
A boiled egg in the morning is hard to beat.
Double trouble
And sometimes a word can be a noun and a verb, but have different meanings. Can you work this one out?
Time flies like an arrow.Fruit flies like a banana.
If you like these homonyms, you will be pleased to know that English has plenty more!

24、Preventing obesity (肥胖) and smoking can save lives, but it doesn’t save money, reported researchers. “It was a small surprise, for it is against the common belief,” said Pieter Van Baal, who led the study. “But it makes sense. If you live longer, then you cost the health system more.”
The researchers found that from age 20 to 56, obese people racked up (累计) the most expensive health costs. But on average, healthy people lived 84 years. Smokers lived about 77 years, and obese people lived about 80 years. Smokers and obese people tended to have more heart disease than healthy people. Therefore in the long run, the thin and healthy group cost about $417, 000, from age 20 on. Smokers cost about $326, 000 and obese people $371, 000.
“The result throws a bucket of cold water onto the idea, based on guesswork, that obesity is going to cost trillions of dollars,” said Patrick Basham, a professor of health politics. “If we’re going to worry about the future of obesity, we should stop worrying about its financial impact,” he said.
“The benefits of obesity prevention may not be seen immediately in terms of cost saving in tomorrow’s budget, but there are long-term gains,” said Van Baal. “These are often immeasurable when it comes to people living longer and healthier lives.” In the meanwhile, he said that governments should recognize that successful smoking and obesity prevention programs mean that people will have a longer chance of dying of something more expensive later in life.
“Lung cancer is a cheap disease to treat because people don’t survive very long. But if they are old enough to get Alzheimer’s (早老性痴呆症) one day, they may survive longer and cost more. We are not advising that governments stop trying to prevent obesity,” Van Baal said. “But they should do it for the right reasons.”
【1】Among middle-aged people, who may cost the health system most?
A. Those who are heavy smokers.
B. Those who are overweight.

D. Those who are suffering from heart attacks.
