二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、During the time of lockdown, a great way to kill time is to read. If you don’t want to buy books, I personally use Libby (or overdrive. com) to connect to my public library’s entire ebook and audiobook database. Here is my take on a well-rounded, diverse, and boredom-curing reading list:

SALT TO THE SEA by Ruta Sepytys

This is a young-adult historical fiction about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945. The story is from the point of view of four refugees (难民) from different countries, all keeping life-threatening secrets and struggling to escape to freedom.

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE by Agatha Christie

One of the best murder mysteries of all time. 10 strangers are invited to a remote island by a secret person and are murdered one-by-one mirroring a nursery rhyme. You absolutely won’t guess who the killer is.

    EDUCATED by Tara Westover

Completely isolated from society, Westover spent her young life living in a remote mountainous area where no one would ensure the children to receive an education. But Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her and ultimately she was accepted to Harvard and Cambridge University. Her story of fulfilling transformation of life is inspiring and may be exactly what you’re looking for.

    THE DIVINERS by Libba Bray

This is a young-adult fantasy that follows a group of teens with powers in 1920s New York City. When Evie stays with her uncle, a string of murders occur. We follow each character as they find their powers and find out who’s killing people. The book’s a little long, but the twists, the 1920s slang, and the diverse and layered characters make it worthwhile.

【1】What is the advantage of Libby according to the author?

    A.It provides information on boredom.

B.It recommends ways to search online.

C.It helps to get access to the public library.

D.It shares some writers’ personal book lists.

【2】What is the book EDUCATED about?

    A.A historical event.

    B.An inspiring life story.

    C.A young-adult fantasy.

    D.A life-threatening secret story.

【3】Which books will attract the readers who are into stories of murder?

A.SALT TO THE SEA & EDUCATED.

B.SALT TO THE SEA & THE DIVINERS.

C.AND THEN THERE WERE NONE & EDUCATED.

D.AND THEN THERE WERE NONE & THE DIVINERS.

  • 27、Industrial agriculture is often held up as the solution to feeding the world’s growing population. But small farms of about 25 acres or less produce over 70 percent of the world’s food. To raise awareness of the contribution of these farmers, a global photo exhibition, We Feed the World, is to open on October 12 in London.

“Industrial agriculture, which mainly focuses on a few types of crops, is not the only answer,” says art director Francesca Price. “We want these images to empower people to support their local food system.”

By growing traditional and non-commercial varieties, small farms support biodiversity and increase food security. With only 12 plants and five animal species making up 75 percent of what the world eats, food systems will be easily hurt by natural disasters and disease outbreaks. However, traditional farming communities are working to preserve their ancient seed diversity.

Keeping variety alive is very important in the face of climate change. In the future, researchers might need to get particular genes from one variety to help another to adapt to warmer, stormier, or drier weather, or to save a prized variety from disease.

Contrary to the false impression held by the public, small farms that practise traditional agriculture can be highly productive. Studies show that the output of crops rises when there’s a wider diversity of crops being grown on a farm, and money is saved since the need for harmful fertilizer and other chemicals is reduced.

“The photographs of family farmers may tell just a few local stories, but the message is universal,” says photographer Cheryl Newman. “I hope that the images will leave viewers thinking deeply about where their food comes from and the impact it has on the world around us.”

【1】What is the purpose of the photo exhibition?

A.To help small farmers to sell their produce.

B.To show the challenges faced by small farmers.

C.To draw attention to small farmers’ contribution.

D.To help farmers to fight against industrial agriculture.

【2】What can we say about the industrial agriculture?

A.It produces more food than small farms in total.

B.It harms biodiversity and decreases food security.

C.It has been competing unfairly with small farms.

D.It is the only way to feed the world’s population.

【3】Why is it important to preserve the traditional and non-commercial crops?

    A.Their genes are much better.

    B.Their output is much higher.

C.They may help improve the other crops.

D.They don’t need chemical fertilizers at all.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.The importance of traditional small farms.

B.The problems with the industrial agriculture.

    C.The consequences of fast-growing population.

D.The impact of climate change on agriculture.

  • 28、   Despite the successful creation of young by cloning various species, researchers still have limited understanding of the technique. Although the overall efficiency and safety of cloning in animals has significantly increased over the past fifteen years, it is not yet a safe process. For example, the rate of dead births and developmental abnormalities remains high. Another source of concern is the risk of premature ageing because of shortened telomeres(端粒酶). Telomeres get shorter as an animal gets older. When the telomeres of a cell get so short that they disappear, the cell dies. The concern is that cloned animals may get the shortened telomeres, with possibly premature aging and a shortened lifespan as a result.

For many, the fact that cloning is unsafe provides a good reason not to pursue it. It has been argued that it would simply be wrong to put such significant health risks on humans. The strongest version of this argument states that it would be wrong now to produce a child by cloning because it would be a case of illegal birth. Against this, it has been argued that even if cloning is unsafe, it may still be permissible if there are no safer means to bring that very same child into existence.

With the actual rate of advancement in cloning, one cannot deny a future in which the safety and efficiency of cloning will be equal or superior to that of test-tube baby. A remaining question is, then, whether those who condemn(谴责)cloning because of its experimental nature should continue to condemn it morally and legally. Some authors have reasoned that if, in the future, cloning becomes safer than sexual reproduction, we should even make it our reproductive method of choice.

【1】What's the main idea of paragraph 1?

A.All species are able to be cloned technically.

B.The efficiency and safety of cloning is increasing.

C.Various risks still exist in the process of cloning.

D.There's still a lot to learn about cloning technology.

【2】What can we know about telomeres?

A.They differ from species to species.

B.The longer they are, the older the cell.

C.They tend to get thinner when aging.

    D.They don't exist in a dead cell.

【3】Why did the opponents condemn human cloning?

A.It would break the existing laws in nature.

B.It would bring great health risks on humans.

C.It has a large gap to be filled up technically.

D.It is against the will of the majority of people.

【4】Which word best describes the author's attitude to human cloning?

    A.Positive.

    B.Skeptical.

    C.Ambiguous.

    D.Worried.

  • 29、Children begin influencing us even before they are born: We plan for their arrival and adjust our lives to welcome them. As babies, they direct our sleep and, as a side effect, our moods. We know that parents of crying babies are more stressed, sleep less and may even think they are parenting badly. In a vicious cycle, stress and lack of sleep can then lead to an increased risk of parental anxiety.

But there’s more. Many studies show that a child’s innate (天生的)personality shapes how we parent them. It means how we parent depends on our children’s character. One child may be naturally outgoing and therefore enjoy a constant stream of playmates. Another might like play by himself, meaning we are quieter around them. One child might love surprises, while another may find them stressful and prefer order and routine.

As children get older, their influence on us becomes more obvious. In one 2016 study, psychologist Leon Kuczynski and colleagues asked parents from 30 families to talk about any recent events where their children had some influence in their lives. He found a wide range of responses from comments on a parent’s appearance, their politeness, their health and driving abilities. They even changed their recycling habits. One parent of a 10-year-old says: “Maybe we didn’t believe in being environmentally friendly before he drew our attention to it.”

The study, explains Kuczynski, shows that while our actions affect the child, the child’s actions affect you. By being in a close relationship, you’re likely to accept this child’s influence”. It happens for good reason too—parents wanting to maintain a close relationship with their children, to improve closeness and respect. Finally, parents and children are learning from each other. Accepting this and responding to their needs make life easier.

【1】What does the underlined word “vicious” in the first paragraph?

    A.Calm.

    B.Demanding.

    C.Successful.

    D.Awful.

【2】What do we learn about parenting according to many studies?

A.Parents should stay quiet around their children.

B.Parents ought to be based on children’s characters.

C.Parenting has nothing to do with children’s personality.

D.Parents’ ways of parenting determine children’s development.

【3】Parents are willingly influenced by their children because they want to ________.

A.maintain good relationships with their children

B.show their deep affection towards their children

C.be treated with respect by their naughty children

D.establish authority in relationship with their children
